No you don't need the XP patch, this error happens sometimes - online and single-player maps. The only thing I know about it is it happens more with user scenario maps which are less than the maximum size (780 X 780 I think).
Surely S3 is the best value multiplayer game - been playing it since 2000. I play S4 offline. |

Does this error message come up when you either start the tutorial or start the Roman campaign?
