I just started this game and can't open the door in the opening scene. Can anybody tell me what to do?

I'm having the exact same problem - not asking for a spoiler - the door handle gives the correct mouse pointer, but DOES NOT respond - ie the door refuses to open. I've been looking in vain for any tips and tricks, the find function on these forums is not the most helpful I've ever known.

Just for the sake of it, once the curser responds to the lever, did you try to move it like you would with your hand on any door handle. Just wondering.

That was the problem. I expected the door to open when the cursor was on the lever. Now I moved the cursor ans the door opens.
