To need_a_name_308:

If you've finished the game: have you tried the different endings?

(You won't be able to visit Channelwood, Jungle Island, Edanna, Haven, etc., though)

I just finished Myst V, and logged on to see if anyone else felt the same way I did--thank you to all the traditionalists who articulated my frustrations better than I could have. I find it hard to say anything bad about any Myst product--I love the whole Myst universe, and having played some of the other adventure games out there--there's no comparison. However, within this genre that I love, the 3D stuff just leaves me cold--I know that makes me some sort of Neanderthal game-wise, but, I, too, have been known to load up Riven or Exile and walk through again, just for the incredible feel--the graphics and ambient sound, and creepy old Brad Douriff (sorry, I probably misspelled that). I upgraded my sytems this past spring, in large part so I could continue the Myst saga. Uru was a horrible disappointment, because of the first person stuff, and the couple of puzzles (mainly jumping in the gondola) that left me totally frustrated--I'm not a Super Mario gamer--don't like the success of a game to depend on mouse dexterity! But then I played Myst IV--wow! I can tell when I really love something, because my patience level goes way up--it took me about two weeks, but I got through everything on my own without hints (up until the Harvester, where I was stuck for days because I totally misunderstood what I needed to do)--anyway, within half an hour of starting Myst V, I was fed up and just wanted to do a walkthrough and get it over with. David Ogden Stiers was an inspired choice for Esher--but, good grief! The cg renderings of the characters were awful! If you're going to include cg characters, remember that your audience has been spoiled by the wonderful Pixar movies. I'd rather see a cut scene of a real actor, or, especially, go on a thrill ride (remember the giant pinball machine?) anyday--they just made me happy! I know no one's going to change the future of gaming for the likes of me--but thanks for letting me vent--and thanks to all of you who responded, pro or con--at least I'm part of the debate!

Agreed, I quit Myst IV because those dexterity puzzles were so frustrating. I hate it when I've already solved a puzzle in my head, only to be unable to actually perform the task because the interface is so clumsy. I've said this before, but it bears repeating... "Any task that's easy in real life should be equally easy in a simulation." If it's not, the simulation is flawed. For me, the challenge in the Myst puzzles has always been to gather information, find elements in the environment that use that information, and then manipulate those elements to affect a solution. When you've made all the right conclusions, but the interface keeps slamming the door in your face, that's highly frustrating. I enjoy the mental challenge of the Myst games, so it's a bummer when you make all the right connections mentally, but still can't get past a puzzle.

All of this is sort of outside the topic, 3D vs. 2D. I very much enjoy the 3D myself, but will readily admit that we all have different preferences. And for what it's worth, I was also disappointed with the quality of the Myst V in-game characters at first, but since I've started playing it again, after building a new PC with a much better graphics card, I can readily state that Esher, Yeesha, etc. look amazing with all of the graphics settings maxed. Seriously, there's a very noticeable difference.

Hi all,
What a thread! 18 pages. Allthough there are things I didn't like about EOA, I really feel kind of sad. I remember playing the old floppy version of The Manhole (okay, I wasn't a kid) and getting the new Masterpiece edition for my kids.
Anyway, before I start choking up, I made my version of the real last chapter of Myst. Enjoy. Last Chapter

personally, i'm extremely bummed out about this whole game. i was SO excited to jump into it after playing revelation, and then i got this. UTTERLY dissapointed. i must say my mouth was hanging open the minute i first began. the theme of such real-looking, lush environments with real actors to tie into it just really took my breath away. like you said, URU style is NOT myst style. it's just not, and i can't believe that the series has ended this way. this whole three demensional, completely fake looking character approach just really saddened me. i've been a myst die-hard since the beginning, and i really wanted the game to end well. this layout just seemed sloppy compared to the exent of riven;exile;revelation. ah. right when i finished revelation, i was so happy to jump into this. what i got was ultimately surprising. :|
this game has definately had me happy, and i think that all of gaming would be so much better if it was aimed towards the likes of myst. just my two cents. [:
