I've tried all sorts of combinations with the windmill control but I just can't find that second stream to lead me to the Arena. I did find a way to the opposite side of the first stream, but it doesn't go anywhere, unless I'm missing something. Help?

Since it is very touchy to give just enough help without giving everything away, why don't you show us a step by step little walthrough of your moves so we can see what you did wrong at the windmill and rotating cage.
As I approach the cage from the stream, the pedestal is facing me and the bars are in front of it. The cage doors behind it are open. When I link in to the pedestal from the first pedestal I can enter the pool area at the rear of the second pedestal. But from there I can find nowhere to go...the pool is surrounded by the big cage.
When you approach the cage from the stream, the cage should be open to the right. There are doors of the end of the passage to the right, but there is a button on the windmill control panel to open those.
Yeah, Steve, basically there are two swampy canals that are almost identical and the whole point of rotating the cage is to get out in the other canal which is open on the end into the arena.
So your mission is to obtain the symbol for the pedestal inside the cage, use it so it appears on the pedestal, rotate the cage so it is open to the other canal, then go back to the beginning pedestal and link inside the cage again with your proper symbol on the pedestal.
OK, here is my situation. The pedestal is facing right as I approach it from the stream. But when I link to that pedestal from the first one, the cage opening is at its back. I can't seem to open the cage to the front of the pedestal. I know that it is facing in the right direction and I don't need to turn it again. I just need to open that confounded cage in the right direction.
When you approach the cage from the stream, the cage opening should be to the right. Earlier, you made the cage opening face you as you approach from the stream, so that you could enter the cage to see the symbol. After that, you should rotate the cage 3 times (90 degrees each time). That makes the opening face to the right.
I can't believe I've come so far only to be frustrated by the simplest problem. OK, once again: The pedestal in the cage is facing to the right as I approach from the first stream. That's where it's supposed to be facing. The cage is SUPPOSED to open in that direction. But when I link in from the first pedestal I find the cage is open to the REAR of the second pedestal, not the front. I don't want to surrender to this problem. but is getting tiresome, as it probably is for you, as well Vogelaar.
To all who helped me with this problem, many thanks. The solution, as it turnes out, was so simple I can't believe I didn't figure it out. Anyway, this topic is closed.
I've finally got my cage facing the right way. However, I cannot get off of it. It was originally up so I put it back down and then the way is closed off. If I'm facing the other stream, away from the entrance from the sea with the rib cage bones. How do I get off the and walk through the stream?
Using the controls at the windmill, you can raise the cage in two stages. You can only get off if the cage is in the middle position: in the initial (lowest) position the floor is under water, in the highest position the floor is up in the air.
Added later: you can in fact also get out if the floor is under water (I hadn't tried it...)

One of the buttons on the windmill control panel opens the gates/doors at the end of a side canal. It's a bit hard to see during the sandstorm, but if you look closely, you can see them opening/closing when you press the button. (The other button doesn't do anything as far as I know.)
I've tried to watch during the wind/sand storm, but I never can see anything. I think my graphics card is a little weak for that...everything is very jerky.
My understanding of the windmill controls was that the large lever on the left starts the windmill, the small lever in the center controls the up/down settings of the cage and the right most lever controls the turning of the cage. I'm pretty sure my cage is facing the right direction and now that I'm on ground level, I can get off the platform. However, when I walk out I can go about two steps forward and that is it...my way is blocked. If I'm understanding you right, there's something on the control panel I don't know how to do and that is lift the gate. Can you help me with that?
I'm getting too old to want to spend too much time figuring out a mechanical device in Myst
There are two red buttons. the one on the right does not work. When you activate the one on the left, you must make sure you push it long enough for the button to go down in its recess. And, only a guess since I did not have this exact problem, you would have to activate the left big lever for power first with the help of the storm. Good luck.
1) Think back to when you approached the cage for the first time, through the canal. The opening of the cage should now be facing to the right, and the symbol on the pedestal to the left. 2) The windmill control panel contains from left to right: - Large lever: engages other controls. - Small lever: raises/lowers cage. - Round button: opens/closes gates. - Round button: defect (does nothing) - Small lever: rotates cage by 90 degrees. 3) If you are in "free-move" mode (mode 3), try switching to "classic" mode (mode 1) temporarily. It'll be clearer where you can move (or not).
Okay, that makes perfect sense now. I used a walk through last night because I had stopped playing the game at this point about 2 months ago and couldn't remember much about this age. I think the author of the walk through might need to correct his steps. I believe there are others out there with the same misconceptions. Then again, maybe I misunderstood them. All along I've been using the right button with the right lever thinking that it rotated and lifted the cage. So, I'll start up some wind and press the left button and see where that leads me....
