I'm stuck. I've done the whole of the first section, even followed Ben jarmins walk through for most of it, and I should be ready to go to Taghira. But I've gone there and there is nothing but the blocked path. No Esher or anything. Is there some kind of requirement that I migh have missed?

Just to be clear, we're talking about the ice Age, right? I ask because folks have gotten the names of the Ages confused in the past, and there's two Ages in this game that start with a T, so...

If Esher isn't in the cave waiting for you when you link in, there's something gone wrong with your game on a technical level... I'd suggest trying to start a new game and see if that helps, and if not, try re-installing the game.
