I've recently begun End of Ages. I have collected my journal and camera just round the corner from K'veer Prison. I soon realised that taking a picture both placed it into the journal and also automatically saved the game. As this is the final MYST game, I'm spending more time taking pictures and making notes than in some earlier games. HOWEVER, each time I reload the game and continue, if I want to add to the journal, I have to start at the beginning of it and flip through every single page to reach the last one. Does anyone know a way to go straight to the next empty page without having to trawl through them all? I'm only at the water field puzzle in Tahgira and already this is irritating me!

I am guessing here you want to get to this last page (save) to edit with a name or infos. My only suggestion would be to make a list (pen and paper)of all the saves you are making with page # without doing it in the journal. I agree it is a pain in the neck. Everything those guys created had to be the hard and longuest way.
Specially if you have played Return to Mysterious Island or Syberia 2 before any Myst game If I was a programer I would create a patch to be able to get a full screen one page window with smaller pictures and a box under each one to write my own description. That would have been too intelligent and too user friendly for Ubisoft people to do something like that. |

Click the camera, and it will put the image on the next blank spot, which it should take you to. Then just delete the image. Try that.

Hi ZuwhoCares,
Do you mean he should only have one save if he does not like to click all the pages to get to it ? What if he takes 10 pictures ? It would have been easier if he had access to a list in one page, would it not ? |

The question was about journal pages, not camera game saves.
The answer is that it's just as frustrating for everyone. There is no way to get to the last page without going from the beginning. Luton UK. GMT. Tapestry KI #: 31293 Cocoa Parties Unlimited! |

Thank you to all who have responded so far. ZUWhoCares; I have tried your suggestion but find I still have to click all through the journal pages to get to my latest photo, even to delete it.
Nanoukmetal, hello again from Revelation; I am with you, a full screen page with smaller windows for comment would have been admirable. I haven't played either of the two games you mention, though my son has, so I'll ask him. Mr ZebeD - I have this awful feeling you have hit the proverbial nail on the head and the only way is to start at the beginning of the journal and click, click, click until arriving at the place you wanted to be all along. SIGH! Incidentally, does anyone else feel that the font chosen for the journal is virtually illegible? I have a flat screen monitor with quite good reproduction but I sometimes have problems reading what I have written. If it was my own handwriting I would understand - after all doctors are notorious for having unreadable writing! |

I've just re-read your suggestion again, ZUWhocares, but more carefully this time. It works, of course! Like most good ideas, it's both simple and obvious - once you know. Thanks again, it will certainly make my journal keeping so much easier from now on.

Dr, can you enlighten the rest of us? How did the camera help with the journal? Thanks.

Hi Dr_beresford,
I have done some thinking and a test about those fonts. If we are talking here about the saves journal, I now use capital letters with a space between every letters and double space between words. Also did noticed that #0 does a better job instead of the capital letter "o". At my age it does make a good difference. |

|
Hello nanoukmetal. Thank you for your thoughts concerning the font. Unlike my previous overenthusiastic response (see the three items above) I've actually tried your idea of using captial letters before I responded. Yes, it is clearer and more legible for us over 60's, though it does take up much more space on the page - and remembering to use the numeral zero instead of the capital letter "O" means relearning some typing skills. Despite this, I think I'll stick with it. Then I shall be able to read my journal once my End of Ages quest is finally over - if ever! At present in among the stars, planets and comets of Todelmer.

For the sake of reference, your journal is saved as an HTML file in your saved game folder. First, make sure you have the option to view hidden files/folders enabled if you're running Windows, and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Myst V End of Ages\Sav\Store1\Journal to access your copy (this assumes you're playing as Player 1... if you're not, substitute the number of your player for the number in Store1). The journal will appear and be rendered in a nice normal black Times New Roman font

Alahmnat you do have a brilliant idea. Are you sure that you and Heimdall have not been implanted with one of the cpus from the Hal computer from "Space Odyssey 2001"

Seeing as how I don't feel compelled to tell Dave (coincidentally, also the name of our new community manager) that I can't do that, I'm inclined to say no. I just like knowing where my stuff is
For Mac users, by the way, journals are located in /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Myst V End of Ages/sav/Store1/Journal. ---------- Guild of Archivists, D'niPedia Writers Ring (DPWR.NET) Uru and Myst Forum Moderator / Community Assistant Do not PM me for tech support or hint requests for the Myst series |

Thank you, Alahmnet, for showing me how to arrive at my journal outside the game. It is so easy reading it in Roman type

As I mentioned in my last posting, I have successfully found "my journal" and been able to read it "offline." However, I still have not found a way of editing it while outside the game. As it is far easier to spot spelling mistakes in the Roman font, I would like to be able to edit these mistakes in this format. Is there a way to enabling this?

The journal is a .html file, so you can edit it with any plain text editor. Be careful not to mess with the HTML tags (the text between < and > )

Hmm! not being very computerwise, I don't understand terms like HTML and what to and not to avoid. Thanks for the help but I really need more specific instructions to allow me to edit offline

HTML is the layour code for web pages. If you don't have any idea what it is, it might be better not to try and edit the journal file outside the game. Sorry to be a wet blanket!

HTML is the name of the file format your journal is stored in, and is identical to the format used by web pages. It really is quite basic. It's not a programming language so much as a way of formatting text so that a web browser (or any other application that knows what to do with it) can display it in a certain fashion.
For the purposes of editing your journal outside of the game just to correct spelling mistakes and whatnot, there's not much you really need to worry about breaking (and if the journal p****r in the game is as forgiving as the one in Uru, it will remove any tags or content not permitted). To actually edit the file, you'll need to open it with something other than your web browser. To do that, hold down the SHIFT key while right-clicking on the file. Go to "Open With", and select Notepad from the list of applications you're presented with (in Windows ME, 2000, and XP, it will give you a few suggested applications with a "Choose Program..." option beneath them. If Notepad isn't listed, click "Choose Program..." and select it from the long list that appears). Once you're in Notepad, you can read your journal and correct any spelling or grammatical mistakes you may have made, then save it (don't use Save As, just hit Save). As long as you don't remove any of the tags (anything contained within these: <> One thing to note is that HTML, when opened with something that knows how to interpret the <> tags, won't treat a new line as a new line. To start a new line in an HTML document, you need to use this tag: <br/> Just in case you decided to break up a paragraph and got confused when your change didn't do anything ---------- Guild of Archivists, D'niPedia Writers Ring (DPWR.NET) Uru and Myst Forum Moderator / Community Assistant Do not PM me for tech support or hint requests for the Myst series |
