Well, UBI (or Cyan) have done a good job of the "real time rendering" so you don't jump from place to place. That's impressive. But here are some thoughts on what I have seen. 1) The setup: Why can't you change graphics settings (some) without having to re-start the game? 2) The modes of input/control of your character: Yes, the latter two are nice, but I prefere the second one. Using the keyboard is kind of against all their other games. 3) What you can see (head movement): I notice they have limited the height you can look up and down are now limited. Kind of more real, but there is a problem which is resultant. 4) The hand: If you are looking up at the ceiling and accidently click, you move in a direction you were not really pointing. This is a bit annoying and I think that if you are looking up - and there is nothing to see/do, the coursor should be "ghosted" and not enabled. 5) The differences between 4 and 5 in how you do things: In 4, you had the necklace to remember things. 5 you have the journal which records everything said to you. In 4, you could "zip" to places. 5 you use the rock thing and it takes you to certain places. 6) The "people": Why did they go for CGI people? Ok, they aren't too bad, but gee, the jaw doesn't move when they talk. Kind of cartoony and I think a step backwards. 7) Yeesha has gone punk: Well, what can I say? Oh, how did a blonde girl become a brunette? To me it would seem one of her parents was from "Star Treck Voyager" (can't remember how to spell the name of the character). Anyway, I have just started playing it and I hope it will be ok. Bye for now. |

i have to agee with you shy_kitten. I think that the Yeesha in Uru/EOA seemed not at all like the one from Revelation. In Myst4, she seemed just how i had imagined Arus' daughter to be. But in URU and Myst5, she became(to use shy_kitten's analogy) a girl from Star Trek. A tattoed(i believe) and rebel girl stuck in a doomed world, different from the spunky and kind little girl we saw in revelation. I would imagine to be a lot more like Catherine

The settings that require a re-start of the game are things that are tied deep into the core of the game's engine. Anti-aliasing and such can be toggled on and off without difficulty because they're things that take place at the end of the drawing process. Texture and video quality, however, is needed much earlier in the drawing process, and unlike the rest of the settings, it's unfortunately not something you can just switch to a new setting without the game having to re-load a lot of data, so the game requires a re-start to accomplish that. On the subject of Yeesha... she's had a really hard time of things in her life. She left Tomahna when she was 16 to explore D'ni, and the experiences she went through and the cultures she met had a profound effect on her... and without her parents there to watch over her closely as Atrus had, she seems to have gone to larger extremes in her actions, both externally and internally. And I would also like to point out that I am living proof that a blond child can grow up to be a brown-haired adult ---------- Guild of Archivists, D'niPedia Writers Ring (DPWR.NET) Uru and Myst Forum Moderator / Community Assistant Do not PM me for tech support or hint requests for the Myst series |

I am also living proof of being a blond child who now has dark brown practically black hair.
Yeesha though regardless of the hair change has truly "gone punk." You'd figure she would have a little more class and different persona altogether...but oh well...as the following saying is true for my family...I can see it being true for Atrus': "Madness runs in my family...it practically gallops." Yet as "mad" as I can be sometimes - to go from experiencing a live actress (regardless of age)to experiencing a Star Trek punk 3-D character...it was just a little tough for me to swallow. Heck...it was tough for me to do so in URU before I even saw Yeesha as a little girl in MYST IV. She lacks discipline...too busy getting herself tattoo'ed. I bet she has a harley logo somehwere on her body. AHHHH a realization: SPOILER - - - - This is why she is not worthy of being the grower! "The end has not yet been written..." |

I feel obligated to point out that not all cultures view tattoos the same way. In fact, a number of cultures just on this planet view tattoos as spiritual things with a great deal of personal importance, not just something to mark yourself up with.

First of all: Cyan developed the game.
6) It is difficult to put 2d filmed people in a 3d environment. Sure they did it in the prevous games but they were node based and they were filmed from multiple angles. If you'd do that in a 3d game, you'll end up dragging a cardbord character in front of a scene, then people would go "it's too unrealistic!" (especially in wander mode) 7) Ah, the famous hair colour argument. While in Myst 4 Yeesha's hair is blond it was developed after Uru got released (which featured Yeesha as a brunette). So, the problem is that when hiring actors, the Ubi left this inconsistincy even though it could have been fixed by hair dye or a wig. |

On tattoos...I stand - "politically corrected" -Alahmnat.
Just following the humorous side of this topic. She still looks like a Star Trek punk though. "The end has not yet been written..." |

Not true. In games like Halflife2 you can change everything without restarting the whole game. |

On Alahmnat's behalf...if I'm not mistaken...I think when he mentioned "the game" ... "the game" ... "the game" ... he was talking about MYST V only...not all games in general.

I'm not sure. I think he believes that it is necessary for games like Myst V ( real time 3D games) to be restarted after changing settings that affect things like AA and the likes.
But this ain't necessarily so There are a lot of games where a restart is not needed after changing these settings. I think this is what shy_kitten was complaining about: Cyan could have done this better. |

While I know that there are plenty of games that don't require a restart and fully understand the Cyan could do better sentiments (also sharing these feelings in a number of ways)...again I'm just not sure in this particular post that Alahmnat was referring to all games in general...my guess is he was speaking about MYST V....but I also guess we should just leave it to him to clarify.

There is a culture that embraces every idea any one of us may consider immoral. If we embrace every culture, we embrace every immoral idea. |
|||
|
Ideas you consider immoral might not be immoral at all. |
||||
|
|
|
Let's leave morality out of this conversation, shall we?
