I came here fully expecting to find a solution to this problem, and apparently nobody else is having it!! After about 30 minutes of sliding on the ice, I got so nauseous that I had to quit the game - and I don't want to go back in. Surprised I used all three methods of navigation and number one was the worst by far.

I remember this was a problem with Exile, but I don't remember what the solution was. I hope somebody here does.

Your problem is a problem that happens to a number of first-person shooter players. It's a sort of vertigo resulting from your eyes telling your brain that you're moving and your balance centers telling your brain that you're not.

My advice is to do as many of the following as you can:

-Enable the "wait for verticle sync" checkbox, which will smooth out what you see on screen greatly.

-Dial back the mouse's sensitivity. It's more work for your arm, but less motion for your eyes. Bear in mind that I don't recommend that you dial it ALL the way back.. (then it becomes almost a menial task navigating the world).

-If you use the 'full control' scheme, keep your character's view at or about eye level. Watching the ground, walls or ceiling move by will add to the vertigo.

-Sit farther from your monitor (of course I don't know how close you are now, but MY eyes are about 2 feet from my monitor).

-Play your game in shorter spurts. Figure out how long it takes for you to feel nautious and play for a time period that doesn't make you that sick. Since you can save at anytime in Myst V, that should help a bit.

I find that I usually get used to games 3D movement quirks, and I did have a small period of adaptation for Myst V. However, 3D games simply don't agree with everybody.

I don't know your system specs, but I've noticed that in areas of lower framerates in my game, the mouse tracking leaves a lot to be desired . . that TOO can also lend to the problem, so if you're not pushing the computing horsepower, that could be part of the problem.

All-in-all.. when you're not doing timed puzzles, just take your sweet time. NEVER hit the run button and maybe with time, you'll get used to it to a point where it won't bother you.

I get this off and on with Myst V as well. Best trick is to just take a break. The worst in the Myst series for this kind of thing was Exile. I dont know why but i always get sick within 5 or 10 minutes.

I had the same problem. In Exile's case, I'm pretty sure it was from the "fish-eye" effect, that wonderful slight warping of the picture at the edges of the screen Googly. Yick...

Wow... I've never heard of FPS games giving you that sensation, but I guess it makes sense!

Why? Did you grow up in a giant inverted tree? Tongue

I've had the same problem, nausea and perspiration. I was very disappointed when I realized that EOA used 3D rendering. I never really got into Uru for the same reason.

I also don't like racing by a point that I want to see and having to circle around like a dog taking a nap until I'm facing the right direction.

I never had any trouble in Uru with motion sickness. And haven't had any in the other parts of Myst V either. I'm going to try the vertical sync setting and see if that helps.

I totally agree with this point. Player navigation is one of the areas Uru was superior to Myst V. I miss the "natural" feel of walking/running through an environment, as we had in Uru. Even RealMyst had better navigation.
The "leaps" forward you do in Myst V are quite unnatural and very often take you past the point you wanted to get to.
The only time I find this advantageous is in timed puzzles, where you need to get to your destination fast, but even here it is quite easy to overshoot your target and have to backtrack, losing precious seconds.

Thumbs down on Myst V's navigation system. Angry

Use the FPS controls, they are much better (for me at least). But we could use a better walking system (walkbias, JUMPING, stuff like that)...

Well, once I am finished I will have myself a look at the files and see what I can do Wink

Hmm, maybe that's why I was so ill (nauseous, headache) feeling yesterday, which was my longest time playing Myst V. I know I get motion sick in the few FPS games I've tried (and never play as a result), but I've never been ill over any previous Myst game, so it seems odd. I had an inkling it may be the case, but there you have it.

No matter. I'm all finished up the game now. Happy

I find the FPS controls troublesome in that rotation is very slow. Strafe, forward and back motions are ok, but rotation is a killer.
In Uru, the navigation felt quite natural, and it is puzzling to me why the same wasn't used here.

I'm okay with the FPS controls in Uru, but I use the "classic" mode in M5. I've had no problem with nausea.

Wow. I get motion sickness really easily, but I never experienced this with any of the Myst games. I had no idea that anyone had experienced this kind of thing.

Whew, it's making me sick too. Haven't experienced this in any of the other Myst games, but half an hour on this one makes me break out in a sweat and then I feel queeeeasy! Yuck. It's putting me off the game I have been looking forward to for ages. What I liked about the other games was the way you could lose yourself in them, and become completely absorbed in another reality, but I can't do that in this one - have to keep looking away and taking breaks. I am so disappointed!

Well, checking the "wait for vertical sync" seems to have helped. And I'm not using the first navigation option. Either of the other two options are OK, because I control the speed of movement with the keyboard. I played for a couple of hours the other night without any problems.

I use mostly the Advanced navigation option, where I use the keyboard to move and the mouse to look and interact. Perhaps that's why I'm not having the motion sickness problem?

I maxed my turning movement with the cursor, just so I could turn faster (default is so slow), plus it seemed easier on the eyes. When I moved too slowly, it appeared that the framerate would go down ("appeared", mind you, I've no idea if it was), but at maximum turn speed, I can zip my view around without any issues.

Interesting comments! I set the game to Free Movement, and have been using the WASD keys and mouse in combination. Yes, I sometimes walk past points of interest and have to backtrack, but on the whole I've compensated for that and it hasn't been bad at all. On occasion I've found myself switching back to Classic Mode when it would make things easier, but I haven't had to do that very often. Being able to switch modes instantly via the 1, 2, and 3 keys is a real convenience.

Fortunately I'm not very succeptible to motion sickness, except for that one commuter flight into Phoenix... Eurgh. But I've used my 3D stereo shutter glasses for a goodly part of EoA, enjoying the Ages in full depth. Wowie. But if you have any tendency toward motion sickness, stereo glasses are probably a bad idea...

I've managed to improve it a bit - I checked the video settings and the defualt settings were pretty low. Anti aliasing & some other setting I can't remember right now were turned right off. Setting them at a mid level worked much better. I still get a headache if I have to go round in circles too much, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was. I am not prone to motion sickness - I have crossed Cook Strait in the ferry when everyone around me was throwing up and I was fine - so it seems weird that I can get sick sitting in my own living room!
