In Todelmer, the bahro twice took my slate but didn't leave a new symbol [the third one] on the pedestal so I can't go on. What is wrong?

Thanks for your help. #3 in the list seemed to fit my situation: "If he picks it up and returns it to the home pedestal but the symbol doesn't appear on the pedestal, it's not quite accurate enough."
So I tried some more. I drew some quite good ones, I thought, and the same thing happened again: he took it, but no symbol. Then I drew a really bad one--only half finished, in fact, and smeary. He took that one and left the symbol! Who can explain that? At least I can go on with the game now!
