Has anyone tried writing anything "unofficial" on the slates?

Yes, and there is a big chance of messing the game up.

My recommendation is to "save, save, save", and then you can play around with the slate and write whatever you want on it, and see what happens!

Sometimes the game interprets a symbol as one you should only know about further along in the game. So, you end up solving an age accidently, and you miss out on good stuff in the age, explanations and all that. So, just keeping saving (taking those screenshots in game - makes a game save), and then you can play around with slate writing as much as you want. If you find that the game seems extra disconnected, and you are further in the game than you think you should be - then you can go back to a previous save.

arg, i wish i had seen this thread by chance. I just did that very thing! the latest save i have is in the beachy age about a quarter way through (thats the only level I've completed). It shouldn't take long to redo that last bit.
