After getting through the maze and figuring out the rock weights, I went through the tunnel and ended up at the second level... I can't seem find a way off the second level... I can't move the rock weights upstairs... I did not bring the slate to get off... Am I stuck or am I missing something

I would say you are missing something like finding a way to get up there but with the tunnel closed (after that first visit). Esher gave you a big hint in one of his speech. You need to listen very carefully.

There's no need to manipulate the weights while you're up there, and the tunnel you came through is the only way out. But you'll need to fetch the slate, then return here. There's something you can do with it.

Do I have to start the game over... I have never been trapped before...

There is a ladder, which from you side, seems to be hard to find. Check every corners on the platform to be able to go down next level, then down the stairs back to first level where you should see/find the inside pedestal/slate.

The only way to guess there is a ladder, is to check your cursor for a "hot spot" down, floor level, on side of platform/floor.

You should be able to get down from the platform through the tunnel. Then go back to the exit from the maze. There's a pedestal there with a link back to the bubble.

I am on the wooden platform where you can see out a half moon window and you can see the symbol on the flag for the slate, which I unfortunely left on the pedestal on the first level... The wooden door closed covering the tunnel entrance. There are 3 stones in hovering in front of the door... The pulleys which moved them are on the ground level... Therefore I appear to be stuck on the second level... One person suggested there is a hotspot on one of the corners that contains a ladder... But so far I haven't been able to find that hotspot...

There is no ladder here as far as I know. But I don't know how you managed to move the weights and close the gate while up on the platform. I thought you could only do that while on the ground.
If it's really that way, you'll have to go back to a saved game created by taking a picture with your camera before passing through the maze.
