Generally speaking , you could click the mouse right button to freeze the screen and then you run the cursor over the slate until you get a full opened hand and you left click for the slate to go up in front of you. Note depending where you scan the slate you shoukd also see a second hand + small slate that is used to drop it on the ground with also a left click. If you need more info, you could read the guide booklet that comes with the game or come back here for more help. At one time or another we all had similar problems so do not feel bad about it. Have a nice day and lots of fun (and "hair pulling" at other times.)

if the slate is lying in front of you, all you have to do is walk over it to pick it up.

Usually moving the cursor over the slate (if you are holding it as if you are walking around) until it shows an open hand will let you move the slate up so you can draw on it.

Once or twice my slate refused to be 'picked up', so I'd save the game and restart and that seemed to do it.

Thank you Dara100 for the nice tip. I had that problem a few times and did not know how to solve it except by going to an earlier saved game. Big kiss on both cheeks.
