I don't know about the rest of you, but I find all the wonderful information in the thread "Recommendations for something after EoA" awfully difficult to access---spread out, as it is, over three pages. So, here's an alphabetic compendium of all the games that were mentioned. Well, it purports to be complete but it's the result of a quick scan on my part and may have omissions.

Ages of Wonder II: The Wizards Throne
Alida
Atlantis: Evolution
Atlantis: The Lost Tales
Aura: The Fate of Ages
Beyond Atlantis
Beyond Atlantis II
Beyond Time
Black Dahlia
Dark Fall
Dark Fall 2: Lights Out
Echo: Secret of the Lost Cavern
Escape from Monkey Island
Gabriel Knight
Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the ****ed
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Indigo Prophecy
Knights of the Old Republic
LeChuck's Revenge: Monkey Island 2
Lighthouse: The Dark Being
Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle
Mysterious Journey II: Chameleon
Mysterious Journey: Schizm
Nibiru
Obsidian
Outcast
Return to Mysterious Island
Rhem
Rhem 2
Ripper
Starship Titanic
Still Life
Syberia
Syberia II
The Black Mirror
The Curse of Monkey Island
The Dig
The Journeyman Project
The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time
The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time
The Last Express
The Longest Journey
The Moment of Silence
The Omega Stone
The Omega Stone II: Riddle of the Sphinx
The Secret of Monkey Island
Timelapse
Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time
Zork
Zork: Nemesis
Zork: The Grand Inquisitor

You'll have to reconstruct at least one title for yourself, as the ****ed censor is on the prowl for perfectly good, usable English words. Sigh ...

I'm glad it's helpful. Personally, I'm at the stage where I'm overwhelmed at the possibility of there being so many wonderful games to play. Obviously, I'll try only a fraction of them ...

quote:
[...] your astonishing word associations...

Well, I've tried to inject some whimsy. Word association games are a blast face-to-face; they develop a life of their own driven by all the subtle, out-of-band communication: body language, nudges, winks, tone of voice, etc. Played in a forum, without all that rich communication and with large intervals between contributions, I think W.A.G. becomes rather tepid. Free association is at its best when it's outrageously, spontaneously free. I'm attempting to make up for what the forum format inhibits by stitching together a chain of associations. To put it another way 'round, I feel like I'm barely getting warmed up with one association!

Are the associations REALLY incomprehensible? I'll grant you quirky, idiosyncratic, etc., etc. But, I hope, ultimately decipherable. You should try it, it's fun!

PS Since this thread has been recently relocated from the Spoilers forum, its context may not be immediately apparent. Check out Myst W.A.G. to see what we're talking about.

Don't misunderstand me, I LOVE your associations; it's like getting ten answers in one (and indeed without waiting long periods).
I think we all have, looking at the given word, a lot of different associations, but do not dare to write this, throw away that, getting too abstract with the third - and are ultimately selecting one of which we still think: It could have been better...or also another one. So I like it a lot how you do it!!!
But I'm not a 'native speaker' with English and I don't live in any English-speaking country, therefore some of your words or social references tickle my mind a lot...Thank the Maker there's a lexicon....and for the rest my mind can blow away with its own associations, right? Happy

See? Now I picture you in front of the oven in Tomahna's kitchen - heat it up! Let our minds smoke...

Hi, pj. Good job! There's one to go in. I don't know if you missed it but it certainly warrants inclusion - Grim Fandango. (You can probably get it with The Dig as part of a Luca Arts Entertainment Pack).

Nice going, pjohansson. To add to your compendium, I give you the inimitable Tex Murphy series:

Under a Killing Moon
The Pandora Directive
Overseer

And its creator as my nominee for runner-up in the creator-as-character cateory (we all know who's in first place). He has the perfect PI voice and look down to his slouched fedora.

pjohannson, you have challenged me. Whenever I see a list of great games I feel obligated to add my own lest they be overlooked. Here are a few not-to-be missed. I don't claim perfection for any of them but each was a pleasant divertisement for me personally:

Day of the Tentacle
Sam and Max Hit the Road
Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis
Riddle of Master Lu
The 7th Guest
The 11th Hour
Shivers
Shivers II
Labyrinth of Time
EVE
Mission Critical
Drowned God
The Neverhood
Darkseed
Darkseed II
The Legend of Lotus Spring
The Egyptian Prophesy
Monty Python Complete Waste of Time
Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail
Monty Python Meaning of Life
Normality
Beavis and Butthead Virtual Stupidity
Stupid Invaders

I know most will be hard to find these days but I add them just in case someone is rummaging through a bargain bin and wonders if it would be worth playing.

Chris Jones got better as he went along, didn't he? Smile

The Pandora Directive (Mission Street) is still my favourite game.

This may seem odd for a lover of adventure games, but Max Payne is my second favourite.

I just saw an ad on Got Game Entertainment that if you pre-order Rhem 2 you'll get a copy of Rhem for free.
(But if you don't want to wait, the games out for more than two months in Europe now.)

I also remembered another game: QIN, graphics are so-so, but if you' d like to learn something (a lot actually!) about the First Emperor of China and his tomb it's nicely done (with inside encyclopedia, which you will have to read, hehe)

A couple more good ones are:

Amber - Journeys Beyond (Very nicely done, if short. CREEPY!!)

Mummy - Tomb of the Pharaoh (Also very good, and starred Malcolm MacDowell. Never finished this one, then lost the CD. Argh.)

I noticed you've included Obsidian. That was one of the most incredible adventures I've ever found in a computer game, and I would LOVE to see it re-released. No kidding, it was so "out there" it was downright eerie. The idea was to portray a physical recreation of dream worlds, and man, did they nail it. Bizarre, and brilliant!

Wow, it's amazing to see so many adventure games out there. I'll have to see if any are Myst-like plus enjoyable. I got disappointed a couple times before.

Mowog, I'll have to keep an eye out for Obsidian...it sounds very intriguing. I have Mummy, but never finished once I got to the mine maze.

Dara, I have owned or played a LOT of the ones in your list. One that is missing that was a very interesting one is "Bad Mojo". Not quite Myst-like, but good puzzles in the world of a roach. 7th Guest and 11th Hour were just too creepy for me to finish.

I also enjoyed the Tex Murphy games. I have not played Overseer yet, but I hope to find it.

Hey, I recently got 'The Longest Journey' as a holiday gift. I saw it on the list in the first post, so I have to ask this question:

How is this game (to those who have played it)?

Good as long as the language doesn't put you off. (It's an M = Mature because of it).

Ooh... Adventure games! Ok my opinions for those who are seeking them

Dark Fall - Kinda cool... creepy and unintuitive at points, but over all good.
Monkey Island Series (all 4 of them) - DA BIZ-OMB! Everyone should play these games. Lucas Arts is da r0x0r. These games must be played from first to last to get the full effect of all the jokes that build on each other.
Knights of the Old Republic - BIZ-OMB! As is KOTOR2.
Lighthouse - Over all a a pretty good game.
Rhem - Don't play this one if you concerned about seeing pretty graphics.
Syberia and Syberia 2 - These didn't earn adventure game of the year awards for nothing. Probably the best adventure games I've played outside of the Myst series.
Omega Stone 1 & 2 - I liked them. I've heard many different opinons on it, but I thought the puzzles were cool and the plot was decent.
Schizm - HA! This was perhaps the most unintuitive game I ever played.

There are alot of other good games that aren't listed here. I'd check out the adventurecompanygames.com website for more adventure games.

Hi,

If you have a big sense of humour or would like to play a game as a group, I would suggest Broken Sword 3 (the sleeping dragon) but beware because it is a full keyboard game which is a bit of a turn off. There are also some very thight timed puzzles. The graphics are pretty good except for the male roles. Playing a puzzle at night time(in the game) or in dark areas is really above average. I would even say, the best.

I suggested playing it as a group because of the two avatars, George is a male and Nico is a woman. The interaction between the two is something to experience. Your group could be divided in two, boys cheering for George and girls cheering for Nico. I promise you will have a pillow fight before the game is finished. Too Happy

And what about Shizm II and Sentinel-Descendants in time? I've had some sleepless night "working" on them...
