Hi Ubi people,
I'm having an impossible problem installing Myst4 onto my laptop. When installing from the DVD drive, the initial .exe file doesn't kick in. When I initiate it from windows explorer, it gets to the initial Myst Revelation splash .bmp then cuts out and reverts to the desktop.

I have tried copying the contents of DVD1 onto my hard drive by creating an UBISoft folder in the Program Files folder. If I run the appropriate .exe file in this arrangement, the installation takes place until it needs the contents of the second DVD. Via a browser search I can locate this content which then loads. However, once I go to initiate the game I get an error that indicates tha the game won't load.

I can supply this error, but I'm wondering if it is some other problem to do with the DVD drive or some aspect of my setup that is causing the initial problem. I've been to the NVIDIA Control Panel and, as its a laptop, there's no multiple monitor issues there. However on the windows OS display funtion, under settings, the default display is always multiple monitors, don't know if this is an issue.

I'm also having the same issue (cutting out and reverting to the desktop)installing Ice AGe 2, however I can't even get any installation for this when I copy the first CD onto the hard drive.

Welcome to the Forums!

Unfortunately, your NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500M video chipset is NOT supported by Revelation. While some unsupported chipsets may work with the game, just not as well as supported chipsets, Quadro chipsets don't appear to be among the "unsupported but work". This may be the cause of your problem. If that's true, you won't be able to play Revelation on your laptop.

However, there are some things to do (in the order shown) before giving up:

-- Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications before installing a driver or DirectX 9.0c, or playing Revelation.
-- Do NOT use a "download accelerator" or "download helper" utility when downloading any driver or DirectX 9.0c.
-- Do NOT boot up at any time with the Revelation play disc in the drive.
-- Make certain that you're using Disc 2, not disc 1, as the Revelation play disc.

1. Install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available starting here. Reboot when installation is complete.

2. Install the latest video driver from Dell for your Quadro FX 3500M. This is R171789.exe (version 94.22, released 4/19/07), available here. Scroll down the page for Installation Instructions. Reboot when installation is complete.

3. Revelation doesn't like dual-monitor setups, so look around for places to enable/disable dual monitors and do the disable thing. Double-check your NVIDIA Control Panel, including sections where you wouldn't intuitively expect to find dual monitors. (Sometimes, what NVIDIA does isn't at all intuitive!) Also look at Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager > Display adapters or Monitors.

4. Install the latest sound driver from Dell for your SigmaTel Audio chipset. This is R153004.EXE (version 5.10.0.5515_RC22-WHQL, released 12/20/07), available here. Scroll down the page for Installation Instructions. Reboot when installation is complete.

5. Install the latest firmware update from Dell for your TSST TS-L632D DVD-RW drive. This is contained in DE04-2.zip (version DE04, released 2/2/07), available here. Scroll down the page for Installation Instructions.

6. Make certain that both Revelation DVD's are free of smudges, fingerprints, any sort of haze, etc., that could interfere with disc reads. Don't just look at the discs and say "yeah, clean". Actually clean them using either water-clear (additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green or blue color) rubbing alcohol or a warm mild detergent solution. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth using a center-outward motion, NOT circular around the disc. Remove any scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail using one of the repair kits available at Best Buy, Circuit City, from an Internet supplier, et al.

7. Re-install Revelation from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, "8. Clean-boot Revelation Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Steps b and t aren't required, since you don't have any saved game progress.

I've updated everything as suggested without luck.
The current workaround i have is to copy the contents of DVD1 onto my C folder on the hard drive. If I initiate the install exe from here it proceeds with the installation until it requests the second dvd. After I have completed the installation in this way it completes the installation. However, when I go to play the game I get the following error after it resizes the screen:
'Unable to create directory d://
Filename: \Myst4\framework\base\private\win32\src\base\disk\file_native.cpp
Line No: 365'

Does this get me any closer to a successful installation?

Yes, it does.

Revelation *really* wants your \My Documents and \My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames folders to be on C:, in C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames. That "Unable to create directory d://" error says Revelation is unhappy with where you've got \My Documents and what its path is!

Suggestions:

1. Change the location of your \My Documents folder.
-- a. Use Windows Explorer to find \My Documents, on whichever drive it exists.
-- b. If you don't have a \My Documents folder at all, create one with read/write privileges on drive C:, as C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents.
-- c. If you have a \My Documents folder but it's not on drive C:, right-click on the My Documents folder on the Desktop.
----- 1. Select Properties > Target, and change the target drive to C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents.
----- 2. Click on Apply > OK.
-- d. If it doesn't exist, create the sub-folder \myst4-revelation savegames in your C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents folder. You should end up with C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames
-- e. If it doesn't exist under C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames, create the sub-sub-folder \journal. You should end up with C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents \myst4-revelation savegames\journal.
-- f. Reboot, and start Revelation.

2. Alternatively, restore the My Documents folder default location, which should be in C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents.
-- a. Right-click on the My Documents folder on the Desktop.
-- b. Select Properties > Target.
-- c. Click on Restore Default > Apply > OK.
-- d. Reboot, and start Revelation.

Make certain you log into Windows with full Administrator privileges when you do any of the above.
