I now have my company's Dell Latitude D600, with plenty of hard drive space for a complete install. Since I will be taking a business trip out of the country as well as spending some time offsite in the States when I get back, I was looking forward to better game play than I've been experiencing (knowing that a newer computer ought to provide updated systems).

I did some disc cleanup and defrag, leaving the other users in place, and proceeded with a full install of Revelation (was surprised I still needed the disc inserted to play, even with a full install). I didn't realize until I started the game on this computer, that once again I have a graphics driver problem. Apparently the Mobility Radeon 9000 that comes with this business laptop is not compatible with Revelation.

Now I know why there's the saying "You just can't win."

Lyn,

On this ATI site, if you click on your appropriate Windows software, and then in the next column on "Mobility Radeon," you will see the list of drivers, which I thought you might be able to use. However the mobility Radeon 9000 doesn't show up... nothing lower than a Mobility Radeom 9600. Are you sure you have the graphics card series number correct?

Yeah, you do in fact have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 chipset, and the latest Dell video driver is available here.

This driver's release date is 12/5/2005 - is that the driver you have installed? (Run DxDiag and look under Display Devices, Driver Date/Size.)

With the AMD/ATI driver, it probably makes no difference that the chipset is a Mobility Radeon 9000 and not a Mobility Radeon 9600, because Dell isn't on the list of Supported Notebook Manufacturers. Typically, when AMD/ATI doesn't list a manufacturer, they really mean that the driver isn't a good fit!

Of course, nothing is absolute, so you could try installing and running the ATI Mobile Catalyst Update Wizard, available here. The Wizard will tell you whether the driver will install on your laptop.

Also, do you now want to concentrate on the Latitude, and forget about your Inspiron problems?

The driver in the Latitude is the latest that Radeon supplies for the Mobility 9000: dated 1/3/2003 (wstrohm, hope that answers your question).

I will try the Mobile Catalyst Update Wizard just to see what it says.

This week, I'll probably alternate between the Inspiron the Latitude.

Apparently no one - at least no one very recently - had done any housekeeping on the Latitude. When I ran the first registry fix, it found over 1,000 problems, and that was only the number it would fix without registering and paying! So then I ran Registery First Aid, and then RegScrub too (which I think I've decided I like the best: low-key but effective). So I hope I've got that all tidied up now.

The Inspiron is performing without a hitch, but of course I can do a "cold" start only twice a day (morn and eve). I'll have to wait till tomorrow evening before I feel comfortable with reinstalling Revelation and beginning game play again to see whether it interferes with startup somehow.

Do you want to save this thread for Latitude questions only? And keep using the original one for the Inspiron?

btw, I am blocked from this site on the Latitude IP address, so links have to be emailed to myself and accessed from the email. Also I can't check for any updates or replies to my posts (which is going to be really inconvenient once I'm out of the country and away from my computer).

To minimize confusion, let's save this thread for the Latitude, and "Transition from Riven tech help to Revelation" for the Inspiron.

A way to avoid the sort of IP blocking you've got is to use your separate and private IP account with the Latitude. Is there a reason you can't also use the IP account with the Latitude that you're using with the Inspiron?

If no housekeeping has recently been done on the Latitude, you should carry out steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

The video driver from a laptop's manufacturer is usually a version of the generic driver from the video chipset's manufacturer that's modified to take best advantage of the chipset as implemented in the laptop. For that reason, I recommend staying with the latest video driver from a laptop's manufacturer unless that driver isn't satisfactory, instead of installing the latest generic driver from the chipset's manufacturer. (While a generic driver is sometimes the only way to solve a laptop video problem, the generic driver can result in functionality compromises.) But go ahead and try the Mobile Catalyst Update Wizard, so that you know what your options are.

However, before we get into installing video drivers for the Latitude, please post its DxDiag report.

A quick question: *how* do I use my personal IP address from a different system?

Until I can do that, I will wait on emailing to myself the dxdiag report so that I can post it here!

Meanwhile, I did try the Mobile Catalyst Update Wizard, which promptly told me it could not install something that was incompatible and that I had the version that I needed for my machine (my paraphrase).

Q. ...*how* do I use my personal IP address from a different system?
A. As I recall, on the Inspiron you're accessing the Internet with AOL. Which should mean that you can install the AOL software on the Latitude, and have at it. Of course, nothing is that simple:
-- a. Does your company's policy mandate against using your personal IP address with a company PC?
-- b. Are you using a dial-up modem with the Inspiron, or DSL?
-- c. How do you access the Internet with the Latitude - modem or DSL?
-- d. Does the Latitude use proprietary software from your company for Internet access? Possibly a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?
-- e. Do you plan to use wireless Internet access overseas or off-site with the Latitude? If so, Latitude built-in wireless or separate PCMCIA card?
-- f. Have you been provided with written instructions on how to access the Internet both overseas and off-site with the Latitude? If not, you should ask your IT folks for written instructions. Be persistent! Read the instructions, then promptly ask any questions you have.

I'd recommend installing the latest video driver from Dell for the Latitude, available here.

Do you have a disc with the current driver on it, or can you get one? If so, proceed as below. If not, let's talk.

Also, before installing a video driver, please post a Latitude DxDiag report!

To install the latest Dell driver:
-- a. Download the driver to a folder, NOT to your Desktop.
-- b. Print out the Installation Instructions at the bottom of the download page.
-- c. Carry out steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.
-- d. Create a current Restore Point.
----- 1. Click on Start > Help and Support.
----- 2. Click on Pick a task, Undo changes to your computer with System Restore > Create a Restore Point > Next.
----- 3. Follow the Wizard's instructions to create the Restore Point, then close back to the Desktop.
-- e. Install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available here, and reboot.
-- f. Close all open applications and your anti-virus/adware/spyware/pop-up software running in the background, then install the video driver. Follow the Dell instructions you printed out.
-- g. Reboot when driver installation is complete.

If you get a black screen on startup, boot into Safe Mode and apply the Restore Point you created above.
-- a. During bootup, press F8 multiple times, then select Safe Mode as the boot option.
-- a. In Safe Mode, click on Start > Help and Support.
-- b. Click on Pick a task, Undo changes to your computer with System Restore > Restore my computer to an earlier time > Next.
-- c. Select the desired Restore Point, follow the Wizard's instructions to apply it, then close back to the Desktop.
-- d. Reboot into normal Windows. The restore process can be lengthy, so don't get impatient. And you may need to reboot more than once.

If the Dell driver doesn't help or causes additional problems, you can roll back to the previous driver.
-- a. Close all open applications, then click on Start > Control Panel > Display.
-- b. Click on Settings > Advanced > Adapter.
-- c. Click on Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.
-- d. Follow the instructions, close back to the Desktop when complete, and reboot.

If Driver Rollback doesn't work for some reason, even after running the Troubleshooter, use the disc with the original driver on it to re-install that driver. If you don't have the disc, boot into Safe Mode and apply the Restore Point you created above.

Latitude information from Dell:
-- Drivers and downloads are available here.
-- The User Guide and other documentation are available here. If you don't already have it, you might want to print out some of this information to take with you overseas.

Is there a reason you can't also use the IP account with the Latitude that you're using with the Inspiron?

Well, while I'm at work I can't, because the internal company network has some pretty heavy-duty firewalls, etc. So if I'm hooked up through the network, I have no choice.

I don't want to install AOL on the company computer, and I don't need it for my email since I can access that through the AOL webmail.
- a. I have no idea whether the company policy mandates against it. In this case, since I'll be away from home for over 10 days, I'd prefer to act first and apologize later.
- b. The Inspiron is on DSL.
- c. From home, I use the same DSL for the Latitude as the Inspiron. While away I assume I will either have hotel Internet or Wireless connections.
- d. Yes, it does use VPN to access the company network. But IIRC, I could access the Internet without using VPN (the last time I used a company loaner laptop).
- e. What's a PCMCIA card? Whenever I've discussed using wireless internet access, people have referred to "the wireless card."
- f. Written instructions? Are you serious? I'm supposed to ask the offshore tech support people for written instructions? Don't *even* go there. Of course, maybe, just maybe, the onsite IT support folks, who used to work for us and now work for the offshore company who has taken over the tech support, might have some written materials or could tell me where to find them.

I don't have a disc for the driver, and I doubt I can get one. Let's face it, they're not even having these laptops vetted and kept current by the IT staff, that's why I had to do so much housekeeping.

I have finished all that housekeeping and am ready to play Revelation, as soon as we settle the video driver issues.

Let's make certain I understand correctly.
-- a. When using the Latitude at home with a DSL connection, you're "blocked from this site on the Latitude IP address"?
-- b. You can access the Internet from the Latitude without going through your company's VPN? If so, how?

Q. What's a PCMCIA card?
A. For a definition and details on PCMCIA cards (aka "PC cards" or just "cards"), go here. That's what "a wireless card" is. When facing the screen, the Latitude's PC card slot is on the left side of the case. (Immediately below this slot is a smart card slot.) Your Latitude probably has built-in Bluetooth capability, but Bluetooth isn't necessarily for Internet access.

There are various flavors of laptop wireless cards or "wireless adapters". What you need for Internet access is most likely a "broadband cellular adapter" or "broadband card". Since the European standards for that sort of thing are different from US standards, you should be certain to get the appropriate card. Also be certain that the card fits in the Latitude's PC card slot.

You might ask others at work what they do for company-laptop wireless Internet access.

Your DxDiag report doesn't contain anything unusual or worrisome. So, to install the updated Latitude driver from Dell, see above under "To install the latest Dell driver:". Note that I've made some revisions to that procedure since its original posting.

If the updated driver doesn't help or causes additional problems and Driver Rollback doesn't work for some reason, boot into Safe Mode and apply the Restore Point you created.

Let's first get the Latitude squared away, then go back to the Inspiron.

Whoa! Weird . . . suddenly I can access the forums from work again.

I am currently entering this post from the Latitude. I was restoring my list of favorites, and on a whim decided to try to access the forum. Voila!

Has ubi.com unblocked my IP address then?

To answer your questions:

-- a. Previously, yes. Even though I was using the laptop from home while connected to my DSL account for Internet access, when I tried to open this forum I would receive an error message page from ubi which said that my IP address had been blocked. (I can sift back through prior posts to find the questions I posted about it, but that might have been back under the Riven threads).

-- b. Can't answer this one. I am workiing from vague memories of spending the night in an airport after a flight was canceled, and keeping myself occupied on the Net. I am basing my assumption that I was not using VPN purely upon the recollection that I was frustrated because I could access the Net but could not access my business Outlook account, which I needed in order to make progress on some work issues. My memory may be faulty on this point, sorry.

As for the wireless card, how about Asian standards? It's no secret that I'm headed to India. I'm not sure who to contact at this short notice, but perhaps I should try.

The blocking may have been done at the forum end, not at your end. Could be that a group of IP addresses was blocked because some idiot was violating forum rules and was banned, your address was part of the group (the innocent bystander syndrome), and that has now been corrected.

Q. As for the wireless card, how about Asian standards?
A. India uses the CDMA, GSM, and GPRS standards, AFAIK. However, if you're short of time, it's probably too late to do anything about getting a card. Can any of the folks you work with help you with their experience, and/or maybe lend you the proper card?

It's possible that you can do something with Bluetooth in India. Dunno.

Well, at least I should be up and running with Revelation. I got the new video card installed this afternoon, so that's out of the way. It was almost too easy: no problems or glitches of any kind.

Another employee (albeit one who has her own assigned company laptop, as opposed to a temporary loaner like I have) has used her wireless without problems. Actually we're all assuming that we'll be able to plug in to Internet through whatever the hotel provides, and also while visiting our offshore vendors.

What? OK, now explain *this*!

Purely out of curiosity, I went back to my office (the laptop is hooked up in an unoccupied cube) and tried to access the forums again from my PC there.

Nothing doing. Once again an error window popped up to tell me:

Error Login/Join

We're sorry, but your IP address (198.45.18.37) has been banned by this community. This means that you may not login or register as long as you are online with this IP address.

So . . . what is going on?

As I said above, "Could be that a group of IP addresses was blocked because some idiot was violating forum rules and was banned, your address was part of the group (the innocent bystander syndrome)..."

That's probably what's going on, and there are at least four possibilities:
-- a. There's an idiot in your office who's doing personal stuff from a work account - as in one who WAS accessing the forums from a work account, did idiocy, and got your office's block of IP addresses blocked. (If you hear heavy breathing and/or moaning from behind a closed office door, the occupant's getting it on with a porn site. Or maybe a secretary? Tsk, tsk!)
-- b. Somebody not associated with your office did idiocy, and got your office's block of IP addresses banned.
-- c. Our wonderful/marvelous/fantastic forum software has experienced another of its many brain spasms, and you've gotten caught in the result.
-- d. One of our Moderators or Community Managers made a mistake while banning an idiot, and you've gotten caught in the result.

Whatever, wait a bit, maybe things will change again.

Ummm, new video card, or new video driver??! Or did I miss something?

My oops. I meant driver not card .

I work in a building in which we are all part of the same company network. When I wrote "went back to my office," I meant, I walked around a couple corners from a cube out on the floor to my office space on the same floor, hooked into the same network. So in one space I had the laptop running while simultaneously I had my PC still signed in.

So does it make sense that . . .

1) I *was* getting that error message even when I was signed on with my VPN using the loaner laptop from home.

2) I *still* receive that error message from my personal PC (redundant?) in the company building, on that network.

3) At the same time, when I use the laptop *now* I can access the forum each time, even in that building using the same network hookup or from home.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

The company network is the same no matter where I am in the building, but one computer gets an error message while another (which also used to be blocked) does not.

Well, as long as it's the Latitude that's no longer blocked from the forums, at least you're (more or less) OK for the trips.

So, now that the driver is installed, how does Revelation play?

The movement from "step" to "step" is faster than what I was getting on the Inspiron, but still slow, still seeing the hourglass before the next scene loads.

I haven't gotten back over to the letters in A&C's bedroom, so I don't know yet whether I'll get to see the intended close ups instead of skies.

And yes, I'm relieved to discover that *whatever* has changed, at least now I can get back here to check in if need be.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 10 hours later - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I forgot . . .

One of the differences I immediately noticed was color. It seemed as if the earth tones were much more muted than they appeared on the Inspiron, and yet the primary colors seemed brighter, at least by contrast.

BTW, the game itself set the resolution for play at 800 x 600, or something like that. Is that because this screen is so much smaller?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2 hours more later - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

And . . . I can see both Atrus's letter to Catherine and the fireplace diagram when I click on the magnifying glss for a close up (instead of the windy skies I was getting on the Inspiron).

You may be seeing the hourglass before the next step loads because of your power management settings. Because it's a laptop, power management may be configured to shut down the hard drive after a very short time to conserve battery power, even if you're running on the AC adapter. If this happens between steps in the game, the hard drive must spin up to speed before the next step loads. This requires a finite amount of time, hence the hourglass.

Change your power management settings. (This also applies to the Inspiron, BTW.)
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel > Power Options.
-- b. Write down the settings you see on the Power Schemes tab, for future reference.
-- c. On the Power Schemes tab, select Home/Office Desk.
-- d. Check to be certain that all of the boxes under Settings for Home/Office Desk power scheme show "Never". If not, make the appropriate changes.
-- e. Click on Apply > OK to close back to Control Panel.
-- f. Click on Power Options again, and verify that the changes you made are in place.
-- g. Click on OK, close Control Panel back to the Desktop, and reboot.
-- h. Play Revelation. If power settings were the cause, the hour glass should now not appear between steps, or should appear for a much shorter time.

Don't forget to change the power management settings back to what they were originally before you need to run on battery power only, or battery life (time between recharges) will be very significantly shortened.

If Revelation likes an 800 x 600 screen resolution and you do also, leave it set that way. Otherwise, you can use the game's OPTIONS button (7 o'clock position in button circle on startup menu), GRAPHIC OPTIONS icon (right-hand main icon at top of page), Game Resolution slider to choose 1024 x 768 or 640 x 480.

Ain't it great to have Revelation running properly? Now we can work on the Inspiron.
