So I installed Revelation after finishing the original trilogy, eager to experience more Mystic greatness.
The installation went perfectly fine, so did the launch of the game. I watch the mesmerizing intro, and off to the main menu. I can hear the dramatic music playing in the background, see all the menu icons, but something's missing...That illustrious cursor I keep hearing about is not there! I updateed all the drivers I can think of, updated the game's version and ran all the tests and my system passed with flying colours. Welcome to the Forums!
In general, -- When playing Revelation, always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, not into a Limited User or Power User account. -- Reboot immediately before playing Revelation, close all open applications, and do NOT run any other applications before starting the game. -- Do NOT boot up with Revelation Disc #2 in the drive, or any disc in the drive. -- When ready to play Revelation, insert Disc #2 into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed. Cancel back to the Desktop if it autostarts. -- Always use the Desktop icon to start Revelation, not a disc menu item. First, run the Revelation Configuration Utility. If you accepted the Revelation install defaults, myst_detection.exe is in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\configurator. -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Click on Start > Run. -- c. Browse... to myst_detection.exe, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box. -- d. Click on OK to run the Utility. Do all of the items under Minimum Specifications have green checkmarks? If not, which items and what do they have instead of green checks? Also, is everything correct under Video capabilities? Then run the DxDiag tests. 1. Click on Start > Run. 2. Type dxdiag in the box. 3. Click OK. 4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear. 5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. -- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions. -- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions. -- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions. 6. Click on the Save All Information button. 7. Close the DxDiag utility. Of the tests you could run, which ones didn't pass? Questions: 1. Who manufactured your PC, or did you build it yourself? If from a manufacturer, what is the PC's *exact* model number? 2. What is the *exact* model number (or name) of your mouse? 3. F:/G:/H:/I:/W: all appear to be virtual drives. Have you tried running Revelation without having them installed? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Thanks for the reply!
I was wondering - could the culprit actually be my on-board graphics card? |

Q. ...could the culprit actually be my on-board graphics card?
A. Yes, it's possible. Your on-board graphics chipset isn't all that capable and may be "running out of steam" before getting around to displaying the mouse cursor. If you actually (the reason for my question above) have an MSI MS-7173 motherboard, you've got a PCI-E x16 expansion slot into which you could install a separate video card. Even if a separate video card doesn't solve the cursor problem, you should get much better video and gaming performance, especially if your monitor can accept digital input. Thanks. I guess it's time for a new graphics card/chipset.

Note that I said it's possible – NOT a given - that your on-board graphics chipset is the cause of the missing cursor. Something else in your system may be causing that problem, which is the reason for my questions above.
Also, if you buy a new video card, you *must* match the power requirements of the card to the wattage capability of your power supply. Installing a card needing more watts than your PS can put out may end up trashing the card and your motherboard! Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Thanks for the advice. If the question you're reffering to is the model # of my MB, then yes, it is MSI MS-7173 motherboard (I'm sorry if this is not the answer/question you meant) :P. Anyway, I'm pretty sure a new, separate video card will solve the problem with Revelation, in addition to the benefit of overall improvement. Do you have any recommendation for one that 'fits' a PCI-E slot? |

UPDATE -Despite purchasing and installing Nvidia's GeForce 9500GT (a separate card of course) the problem still persists. I know that buying a brand new card wasn't guaranteed to solve the issue, but that doesn't make things better for me.
I simply don't know what to do - Of course I updated all the new card's necessary drivers, ran all the configurations tests (which came back positive on all accounts), checked my system's compatibility. What else can be done? I should make clear something I should have in my initial post - It appears the problem is not with the mouse, since after fading in to the main menu from the intro, the game simply freezes. I can see the menu (sans the mouse cursor) and hear the background music, however I can not, in any way shape or form, interact with the game itself, or anything on the menu for that matter (using the keyboard keys included). I'm really at a loss. |

Hopefully, you properly installed the latest video driver for your new GeForce 9500 GT (ForceWare 181.22) as per the instructions in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. Particularly in regard to uninstalling the existing NVIDIA driver and rebooting before installing the latest driver. If that isn't what you did, properly re-install ForceWare 181.22.
Have you tried running Revelation without having F:/G:/H:/I:/W: installed? Suggestions: -- Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications before starting on a suggestion or when rebooting within a suggestion. -- Try playing Revelation after completing each suggestion, to see if the problem has been solved. 1. Don't assume that the problem is not mouse-related. It could well be, since your existing mouse driver is old - install the latest driver anyway. It's available from Logitech starting here. -- a. Tried re-installing both the NVIDIA driver+mouse driver according to the instructions. Nothing.
So I guess my only remaining option now is a clean boot re-install? |

Did you do steps 1 through 7 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up?
Re-installing Revelation from a clean boot isn't necessarily your only remaining option, but it's next in the list of most-likely fixes (and just below doing steps 1 through 7). So, try it! Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Mystboy,
I encourage you to take the time to follow Heimdall_G's instructions to the "T." Only then can you move on from the basics into ever more and more indepth steps. This may not be a quick fix, the steps may seem tedious, but he'll see you through to success. Oh, and btw, it will help him to help you if you answer the questions he asks. |

LynComeLately, I do believe I answered all the questions Heimdall_G was so kind as to ask me. If I did indeed miss anything at all I'd appreciate it if you guys could point me to the oversight.
As for the solution, or fix to the problem, I seriously don't get this. Revelation isn't the first modern (not so much by now come to think of it) game I attempted to play. Sure, I had problems before, but they were fixed quite easily, usually with patches and updates provided by the publishers of those games. Never have I had to go through so much trouble just to This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mystboy, |

Hi Mystboy,
Unless I have missed something, here are three questions from Heimdall to which I have not seen a direct response to. 1- What are your power supply's manufacturer and *exact* model number? 2- Have you tried running Revelation without having F:/G:/H:/I:/W: installed? 3- Did you do steps 1 through 7 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up? Plus one new question from me: Are you trying to play the game in in windowed mode ? |

Hi nanoukmetal! 1. Golden Tiger 400W PSU With 12cm Fan 20+4 Pin (I have no idea what model number to look for). 2. Yes, I have - to no avail. All of them are virtual drives, of course. 3. I can't say that I did all those steps. I ran disk-cleanup, and most of the rest (like virus and adware scans) is routine anyway. 4. Nope, never tried playing it in windowed mode. |

The question about your power supply was aimed at whether you could install a certain type of video card. Since you have a new card and it's apparently running OK, that's now immaterial.
"...most of the rest (like virus and adware scans) is routine anyway." Unless you very specifically set up your malware apps to do complete, in-depth scans of your hard disks, your routine scans are only the bootup quickie type of thing. Be aware that the purveyors of malware are extremely adept at making that type of scan a nonevent as far as their little gems are concerned. And do you *routinely* (like once every couple of weeks, minimum) defragment your hard disks, and check your Registry and your hard disks for errors? If so, my compliments - you're one of the very few who do so. If not, do ALL of steps 1 through 7 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP, and then re-install Revelation from a clean boot. Hi,
I have a question regarding drives. On device manager, under Disk drives I get Hitachi HDS721616PLA380 And under DVD/CD-ROM drives: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A Just to make sure - is this normal? If so, what's the difference between the two categories? And what firmware should I download? (drive's model: DVD R/RW DL recorder, firmware version: 1.02, according to Nero's InfoTool). |

Q. ...what's the difference between the two categories?
A. The Disk drives category contains system hard disks like your 160 GB Hitachi HDS721616PLA380, as well as micro drives and USB memory sticks (thumb drives), if you have one attached. The DVD/CD-ROM drives category contains system DVD and CD drives, both the read-only and read/write (aka "burner") varieties. Your Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A is a CD/DVD reader/writer. Q. Just to make sure - is this normal? A. Yes, it's standard for recent versions of Windows. Q. And what firmware should I download? (drive's model: DVD R/RW DL recorder, firmware version: 1.02, according to Nero's InfoTool). A. Take a look at the label on the drive to verify that what you have is in fact a Sony NEC Optiarc Inc. AD-7170A, and also look at the connectors on the back of the drive to verify that it's a P-ATA (parallel ATA, aka IDE/ATA) drive. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! If you install the wrong firmware, you'll almost certainly end up with a rather expensive doorstop. Be aware that updating your disc drive's firmware is NOT a simple matter! If done incorrectly, you'll almost certainly end up with a rather expensive doorstop. Sony NEC Optiarc Inc. is now Sony Optiarc America Inc. and is the official website for this brand of disc drives. Their SONY Optiarc DVD RW Series support page has firmware version 1.04 (AD7170A_GN_104.ZIP) for the AD-7170A P-ATA drive. This is what I believe - but CAN NOT GUARANTEE! - you should use to update your drive's firmware. Be sure to read both Sony's drive flashing instructions and the readme.doc file in AD7170A_GN_104.ZIP, and follow these instructions *very* carefully! If you make a mistake while preparing for installation or while installing the firmware, you'll almost certainly end up with a rather expensive doorstop. At the very least: -- a. Connect your AD-7170A to the secondary IDE channel as master or slave. ----- 1. Reconnect as originally when flashing is complete. -- b. Switch the drive from DMA to PIO mode before flashing. ----- 1. Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Primary IDE Channel (and Secondary IDE Channel) > Advanced Settings > Transfer Mode > highlight "PIO Only" > OK and close back to the Desktop > reboot. ----- 2. Reset to DMA Mode when flashing is complete. -- c. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges before running AD7170A_GN_104.exe, and close all open applications. Also deactivate your anti-virus software, all of your virtual discs, and any packet-writing or DVD burning software (DLA, Nero Burning ROM, Roxio Easy Media Creator, etc.) running in the background. -- d. DO NOT run any other software or intentionally turn off power to the PC while flashing is in progress. -- e. DO NOT flash during a thunderstorm or any other time when power may be interrupted. Heimdall_G, sorry to interrupt, but I have a question (I read everything, so I've been following this thread too).
I had asked you about the frequency of each of the housekeeping tasks, and you had suggested once a month for hard disc error check, defrag, and registry repair. Above you are suggesting every couple weeks - twice as often as I'd thought. Obviously there's nothing "wrong" with doing it more often, but is it necessary? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - p.s. I hope Mystboy comes back and assures us he did *not* end up with "a very expensive doorstop"! |
