This Post is intended as a "Don't worry" reassurance for all those folk like me who are not propellerheads, geeks, or who have never strayed any further than opening a software package on their Apple. (I've been a Mac user since 1987!)
My new Intel iMac running Tiger 10.4.4 would not allow Myst 4 (complete with patch 1.03) to start. Not good.... After ploughing through these and other forums the commonly suggested route to success was altering the way the computer operates by changing the Darwin / UNIX CODE - eeeek! Programming! I don't do programming! I did not want to damage my Mac's perfectly tuned and virgin set up - and I can't be the only scaredy cat. Still, the desire to see how Atrus's naughty boys are getting on was too powerful... so I succumbed and decided to try the option (I include it below) and so with trepidation... I opened Apple's Terminal application. In short the method worked, and I was immediately off on the Gondola to meet Atrus and take pictures and ... oh just bite the bullet. It works. So, if this sorts your problem then I hope my calm words were of use. If your problem is discussed elsewhere - just keep looking and don't be afraid to 'tinker' - it does work. Although, as a newly qualified "Mac Programmer", I can't claim to cure all problems - nor make a living in the process. Here's the "fix" I used and all I can add is that when you open Terminal you do indeed just start by typing "cd " (that's cd then a word space) at the end of the text that appears - in the exact spot where the grey (gray in US) rectangular non flashing cursor is seen - then follow that with the other instructions shown below in blue. Enjoy Found this in another area of the forum! It works! The following has been reported to work for an iMac (running Tiger 10.4.4) having problems getting Myst IV to run. No guarantee it'll work (or work with Myst V as well), but it's worth a try. Get Info on Myst4.app and set it to Read/Write Open Terminal Type: cd_ (that's "cd" followed by a space, no quotes) Drag the Myst4.app icon into the Terminal window, which will give you the path to the app Press return. Type the magic line: chmod a+x Myst4 Press return, quit Terminal. Now, instead of going into the contents to run the modified file, just double click on the Myst4.app icon. Also from Myst IV on IMAC Dual Core:
"It took me a while to work out we are actually modifying the Myst4 file *inside* the Myst4.app file. So the instructions above don't really work. Instead, I went to terminal. Typed 'cd ..' until I was back in my root directory. Then 'cd ubisoft', 'cd myst4', 'cd myst4.app', and then the chmod command." Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |
