Hi, I am getting a sound display error when I click the blue button on the Spire chair arm to bring down the control board with the rhythm knobs and control buttons. The game promptly aborts. This occurs just as I am about to bring the rhythm knobs to the # 12 position. I have seen the underground cavern when the crystals are made. The next step should be my witnessing a massive explosion when a crystal bomb is released. How can I get beyond the sound display error without upgrading my sound drivers? This would entail obtaining the MS Vista operating system which I really don't want to do right now.

Heimdall, I did actually get through that obstacle. Occasionally the game would freeze up, but nothing that would prevent me from continuing the game. Are you encouraging to follow through with the previous steps to get through this hiccup?

I'm not offended, but I definitely do need you to answer this question:

Which fixes have you done of those suggested in my post of Thu July 10 2008 15:39?

1. I cleaned disk 2 with a lint free cloth, damp with warm water and window cleaner, cleaning the disk in straight lines.

2. I used the video setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP.

3. I applied all Myst IV patches.

4. I cut off all unnecessary processes and applications running in the background.

5. Re-install Revelation from a clean boot, following the instructions at #8 for clean boot.

6. I updated all applicable drivers except sound as my computer (Compaq Presario MD 64) does not have a new driver update for REalteck AC'97.

Again, in general,
-- Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, NOT into a Limited User or Power User account.
-- Close all open applications immediately after a reboot.
-- Do NOT boot up with Revelation Disc #2 in the drive, or any disc in the drive.
-- When ready to play Revelation, insert Disc #2 into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed. Cancel back to the Desktop if it autostarts.
-- Always use the Desktop icon to start Revelation, not a disc menu item.

Suggestions:

1. Download and install the latest driver from AMD/ATI for your Radeon Xpress 200 video chipset. This is "ATI Catalyst(tm) 8.8 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition - Motherboard/IGP Drivers", available here.
-- a. Carefully follow the instructions under Installing AMD/ATI Radeon Drivers, "3. Here's the driver installation procedure....", in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP.
-- b. Be certain to install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c as part of the driver updating process.
-- c. When driver installation is complete, reboot and play Revelation.

2. Download a fresh copy and re-install the original driver package from HP for your sound chipset. This is "Spring 2006 Original Realtek AC'97 Audio Drivers", sp26664.exe, available here.
-- a. When driver installation is complete, reboot and play Revelation.

3. Run the Revelation Update Utility. If you accepted the Revelation install defaults, mystupdate.exe is in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\updatelauncher.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. Make certain that you have an active Internet connection.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Browse... to mystupdate.exe, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to run the Utility.
-- e. Allow any updating to fully complete, then close the Utility.
-- f. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- g. Play Revelation.

4. Reset Revelation options as follows.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Start Revelation, and click on the OPTIONS button (7 o'clock position in button circle).
-- c. Click on the AUDIO OPTIONS icon (2nd main icon from left at top of page).
-- d. Uncheck the boxes (by clicking on them) for:
----- 1. Overall volume, Music and SFX ON/OFF
----- 2. Music volume, Music ON/OFF
-- e. Play Revelation.

If Revelation now plays properly, re-check the boxes. Do one box at a time, and exit/restart Revelation between re-checks.

Heimdall, I followed your advice and I got past the sound display error, and have traveled beyond Spire.

As I explore Serena, my issue now is that the game frequently shuts down and clears out, occasionally causing my computer to reboot.

Once I have the free moment, I need to look through old postings to this bulletin board for solutions.

1. Do all of steps 1 through 6 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

2. If none of the above help, install the latest version of QuickTime. First, uninstall all versions of QuickTime.
-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
-- c. Wait for the Currently installed programs box to populate, then click on the QuickTime entry.
-- d. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
-- e. If prompted to confirm the removal, click on Yes.
-- f. If you find more than one QuickTime entry, repeat as necessary to remove *all* installed versions of QuickTime.
-- g. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, and reboot.

Then install QuickTime 7.5.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Download "QuickTime 7.5 for Windows XP or Vista", QuickTimeInstaller.exe, from here to a folder on your hard drive.
-- c. Disable all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up software running in the background.
-- d. Click on Start > Run.
-- e. Browse... to QuickTimeInstaller.exe, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box.
-- f. Click on OK to begin the installation process. Accept the install defaults.
-- g. Close back to the Desktop when installation is complete, and reboot.
-- h. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
