Welcome to the Forums!

Have you updated your video, sound, and mouse drivers to the latest available from your PC or motherboard manufacturer?

There are actually several other possibilities! The following assume that you're running Windows XP and not Vista.

In general,
-- When playing Revelation, always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, not into a Limited User or Power User account.
-- Reboot immediately before playing Revelation, close all open applications, and do NOT run any other applications before starting the game.
-- Do NOT boot up with Revelation Disc #2 in the drive, or any disc in the drive.
-- When ready to play Revelation, insert Disc #2 into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed. Cancel back to the Desktop if it autostarts.
-- Always use the Desktop icon to start Revelation, not a disc menu item.

First, you apparently have a video problem. Since your drivers are current, you may have a video chipset that is not completely supported by Revelation. Supported video chipsets are:
-- AMD/ATI Radeon 7000 to 9800 or later
-- NVIDIA GeForce 2/3/4/FX/6XXX/7XXX/8XXX or later
-- Matrox Parhelia (PC only)
-- Intel i865G to i915G

These chipset families are the only ones that will properly run Revelation. However, note that laptop models of these chipsets are NOT fully supported and may NOT properly run Revelation.

If you don't know which video chipset you have:
-- a. Click on Start > Run.
-- b. Type dxdiag in the box.
-- c. Click OK, and let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
-- d. Look under Device on the Display tab to find your video chipset.

Next, if you DO have a supported video chipset, run the Revelation Configuration Utility. If you accepted the Revelation install defaults, myst_detection.exe is in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\configurator.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Browse... to myst_detection.exe, and double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to run the Utility.

Do all of the items under Minimum Specifications have green checkmarks? If not, which items and what do they have instead of green checks? Also, is everything correct under Video capabilities?

If the Configuration Utility shows that everything is OK, try the following suggestions.
-- It's a good idea to print out the instructions, so that you don't forget (or incorrectly apply) a step.
-- Play Revelation after completing each suggestion, to see if you still have the hand problem.

1. Install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available starting here. When you get to the point in the download process that gives you the Run/Save/Cancel window, click on Run and follow the prompts. Reboot when installation is complete.

2. Run the game using Windows Compatibility Mode. Right-click on the Desktop Revelation start icon, then:
-- a. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu, and click on the Compatibility tab.
-- b. Under Compatibility Mode, click on the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box to check it.
----- 1. Select "Windows 98 / Windows Me" mode.
-- c. Under Display settings, click on the "Disable visual themes" box to check it. Leave the other two boxes unchecked.
-- d. Under Input settings, click on the "Turn off advanced text services for this program" box to check it.
-- e. Click on Apply > OK.
-- f. Start Revelation using the Desktop icon.

3. You may have a system problem that you don't know about. To eliminate that possibility, do all of the steps under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Even if this doesn't solve the Revelation issue, Windows will run much better.

4. Carry out section 2 ("Revelation may be asking for something....") in Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP.

Post back if you have questions or if the above don't make the hand problem go away.

Welcome to the Forums!

The latest Vista video driver from Acer for your Aspire 5103WLMi is "VGA_ATI_v8.362", 114 MB, VGA_ATI_v8.362.zip , available starting here.

Suggestions:

1. Install Vista SP1, which should also install DirectX 10.1. SP1 is available through either Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update or Microsoft's Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330).

2. Install the latest Vista mouse/touchpad driver from Acer for your Aspire. This is "Synaptics Pointing Driver 9.0.3c", 22.7 MB, Synaptics Pointing Driver 9.0.3c.zip, available starting here.

3. Some problems that appear to be video-related are actually due to the sound driver. Install the latest Vista sound driver from Acer for your Aspire. This is "Audio_Realtek_vx.10.0.5605_WHQL_XP_Vista_x86", 41.6 MB, Audio_Realtek_vx.10.0.5605_WHQL_XP_Vista_x86.zip, available starting here.

4. Some programs run properly on Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista.

5. Try what's called out in:
-- How to troubleshoot application compatibility issues in Windows Vista
-- How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer
-- Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista

Hi

thanks for the info but I have newer drivers than those you have listed on the machine the vga driver is 2007 mine is decemeber 2008.

I also have service pack one installed and tried the mouse driver but it states mine is newer.

The vanishing point is the only problem I have otherwise the game functions normally it just is very visable and very annoying.

thanks

sharon

Hi

I have gone through all the links you sent and the drivers but nothing is working. I update drivers everyweek. I have tried running in all the compatibility modes. Everything but the darn vanishing point is still there.

Thanks

If you have a video driver dated December 2008, you probably downloaded it from the AMD/ATI website or got it from another site that did. Keeping your drivers up-to-date is a good idea, but you don't want to get overly-enthusiastic. Especially with a laptop's video drivers!

Laptops are specialized beasts. Manufacturers like Acer always "tweak" the original reference drivers (the ones from the video chipset manufacturer, like AMD/ATI) to take best advantage of a specific laptop's graphics system. If you install a non-tweaked Catalyst driver from AMD/ATI, video problems may result. Your Revelation problem is a good example.

Additionally, a video chipset installed on a laptop's motherboard is NOT the same as one installed on/integrated into a desktop's motherboard. The required drivers are different, and a desktop driver should NOT be installed on a laptop. With AMD/ATI, the choices on their Find a driver page are "Mobility Radeon" and "Integrated/Motherboard". Neither of these driver categories is what you want for your laptop.

AMD/ATI feels strongly enough about this issue to post a direct warning. From their website's Knowledge Base:

"Mobility Radeon™ Support for Windows Vista

Currently AMD does not provide any driver support for Mobility Radeon™ products. All driver and technical support for Mobility Radeon™ products is provided by the original laptop or notebook manufacturer. The drivers that are available for download at ati.amd.com are for desktop products only.

To download Windows Vista Mobility Radeon™ drivers or driver updates for your laptop or notebook product, please visit your laptop or notebook manufacturer's website."

BTW, the same caveats apply to laptop sound drivers, and what appears to be a video problem can actually be related to your sound driver. The latest Vista sound driver from Acer for your Aspire is "Audio_Realtek_vx.10.0.5605_WHQL_XP_Vista_x86", 41.6 MB, Audio_Realtek_vx.10.0.5605_WHQL_XP_Vista_x86.zip, available starting here.

In general,
-- When playing Revelation, always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, not into a Limited User or Power User account.
-- Reboot immediately before playing Revelation, close all open applications, and do NOT run any other applications before starting the game. Also close any anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-adware programs running in the background.

Try the following:

1. Turn off Vista Aero before playing Revelation.
-- a. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, then click on Personalize.
-- b. Click on Windows Color and Appearance > Open classic appearance properties for more color options.
-- c. Under Color scheme, select Windows Vista Basic.
-- d. Click on OK.
-- e. Play Revelation.

2. Apply both Revelation patches, which are available here. I recommend applying the 1.02 patch and then the 1.03 patch. The 1.02 patch is 41.1 MB, while the 1.03 patch is only 15.4 MB, which may mean there's "good stuff" included in 1.02 that isn't included in 1.03. Apply the patches as follows:
-- a. Log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Browse to myst4_v1.00_to_v1.02_pc.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- e. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults.
-- f. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- g. Close all open applications.
-- h. Click on Start > Run.
-- i. Browse to myst4_v1.0_to_v1.03_pc.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open: box.
-- j. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- k. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults.
-- l. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- m. Play Revelation.

3. The latest Vista video driver from Acer for your Aspire 5103WLMi is "VGA_ATI_v8.362", 114 MB, VGA_ATI_v8.362.zip, available starting here.
-- a. Uninstall your existing video driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs utility.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
----- 2. Click on the video driver entry, then click on Uninstall. Follow the Wizard's prompts.
----- 3. When uninstalling is complete, close back to the Desktop.
–- b. Reboot, and cancel out of any attempt by Vista to install a new video driver. The default VGA driver will be installed.
-- c. Install the "VGA_ATI_v8.362" driver using Start > Run. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- d. Play Revelation.

4. If none of the above help, install Revelation from a clean boot.
-- a. Uninstall Revelation using the Add or Remove Programs utility.
-- b. Do step 1 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- c. Re-install Revelation.
-- d. Do step 7 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- e. Play Revelation.
-- f. If Revelation still doesn't play properly:
----- 1. Run the game with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled.
----- 2. Run the game in Compatibility Mode.
----- 3. Install both patches.
----- 4. All 3 of the above together.

Hi! This is my first post...

I am having the exact sameproblem, and i'm so relievedthat I'm not the only one. First off, I'd like to say that I have nothing against this product. Granted, it has unjustly inconvenienced hundreds of users-- probably more than 50%-- because of it's poor design. still, it has worked perfectly on my system up until now. (actually since June, but i've been lazy...)

I haven't tried all of the solutions in this thread because my system is different. I have a Dell Optiplex 320 running Vista Home Basic (32-bit)with a core 2 duo and an ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 series chipset w/ latest drivers etc. When i run config utility, everything's ok, including the vid card... but not the vid driver! this confuses me bc my card doesnt meet sys requirements, but i have the latest driver... (ok mb my card is to blame but i'd like to avoid purchasing a new one.) to give you more info, i'll include the dxdiag. please help! (unfortunately, doesn't look like i can attatch files, so i'll have to copy it in full... Sad

Welcome to the Forums!

Questions:

1. Are you doing what I call out several times above under "In general"?

2. Have you carried out *ALL* of:
-- a. In my post of Sun December 28 2008 15:22, suggestions 4 and 5?
-- b. In my post of Sun January 04 2009 12:27, under Try the following:, steps 1, 2, and 4?

If not, do so now!

3. Is your Radeon Xpress 200 video chipset integrated on the motherboard, or is it on a separate card?

4. What's the source of your currently-installed video driver?

5. Did your mouse come with the Optiplex, or did you buy it separately?

Thanks for replying!

1. I wasn't, but I tried it and it didn't seem to make any difference. I tried it several times, because most of the troubleshooting steps require reboots.

2. a. #4 didn't work
#5-- tried everything in 1st and 3rd articles at no avail; 2nd article seemed irrelevant, so I didn't.
b. #1--no luck
#2-- no luck, but I didn't have the patches so it's good that I do now.
#4--already tried it a while back with no luck.

3. I don't know exactly... it seems like it must be on the motherboard, because the only category it shows up in on the ATI website is "Integrated/Motherboard." If it's not on the motherboard, that could be a problem.

4. I got the driver from ATI.com.

5. It came with the Optiplex, and it's working fine.

A couple other things... my computer's been a little suspicious ever since I downloaded the latest ATI driver. Every time I start up, I get 5 popups: an update to EA download manager which I cancel every time because it never works, a message from Live OneCare telling me to back up my computer, an ATI window telling me to register the product, a UAC window for windows installer (which I always cancel), and, most notably, a window with the ATI logo with this error message:
"Could not load file or assembly 'MOM.Implementation, Version=2.0.3257.27085, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=90ba9c70f846762e' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."

Also, ATI Catalyst will no longer start since I updated it. And as i already mentioned, the Configurator says my driver is no good (but my chipset is compatible.)

Skype was also always on in the background until I changed that before I did what you said.

Thanks,
Ethan

Again, in general,
-- When playing Revelation, always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, not into a Limited User or Power User account.
-- Reboot immediately before playing Revelation, close all open applications, and do NOT run any other applications before starting the game. Also close any anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-adware programs running in the background.

"...a UAC window for windows installer (which I always cancel)". Depending on what UAC wants you to do, cancelling may well be a mistake, since doing so may prevent the proper installation of the video driver. Could be that's one of the reasons you're having problems! Also, did you in fact successfully register the ATI driver?

Before you do any of the following, read through How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer, especially "Run the program installer in compatibility mode" and "Run the program installer as an administrator".

Suggestions:

1. Install the latest video driver from ATI for your Radeon Xpress 200 chipset. Assuming the chipset is integrated on the motherboard, this is "ATI Catalyst™ 9.1 Display Driver for Windows Vista (32 bit) - Motherboard/IGP Drivers", available here. Download and install as follows:
-- a. On the AMD/ATI page, download 9-1_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_74233.exe.
----- 1. Download the file to the Desktop.
----- 2. When downloading is complete, you'll have an icon for the file on the Desktop.
-- b. Download AMD/ATI's CATALYST Uninstaller (cat-uninstaller.exe).
----- 1. Download the file to the Desktop.
----- 2. When downloading is complete, you'll have an icon for the file on the Desktop.
-- c. Double-click on the cat-uninstaller.exe Desktop icon to start the program.
----- 1. Follow the Wizard's instructions to remove all AMD/ATI files. The program will take a minute or so to search your hard disk(s) - wait for it!
----- 2. Reboot/restart when prompted.
----- 3. If Windows wants to install a video driver during reboot, cancel it. Windows will then install its default video driver.
-- d. Download and install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86).
----- 1. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- e. When Windows startup is complete, double-click on the 9-1_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_74233.exe Desktop icon to run the program.
----- 1. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and reboot when prompted.
-- h. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and start Revelation.

Note that some programs run properly under Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista, and also:
-- Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista
-- How to troubleshoot application compatibility issues in Windows Vista

2. Whether it's already installed or not, download and install the latest mouse driver from Dell for your Optiplex, available here.

BTW, if you don't already have the URL, Dell's Vista drivers and downloads for your Optiplex 320 are available starting here.

Hi again,

Thank you so much for all your help. After installing the ATI driver (for the umpteenth time, I might add) and following your instructions to the letter, the problem is solved and I can resume laughing at all those folks who can't get this game to work! (just kidding.) And I registered with ATI, as (I think) you reccommended. Now next time I have a problem with this game, I'll know who to ask.
