Long story short, computer wouldn't start up, as whenever I logged on, something tried to write to something and crashed everything. Through various trial and error, we've found that the ONLY program that we believe can be doing this (aside from a virus) is the Myst IV Registration Program.

We got rid of Myst IV in safe mode, but the registration program is still there and we can't trace where it is, and we can't find it on the list of startup apps. I need help, and soon, as there's going to be a reformatting tomorrow morning if we can't fix it.

The only reason God gave us the ability to learn was because we had no other ability with which to defend ourselves. It was the worst mistake God ever made.--Chesrook

First, new avatar and signature guidelines that apply to *all* of the Ubisoft Forums have just been posted. See Universal Ubisoft Forum Signature and Avatar Limits (1/9). In particular:

Signatures
"¢ The total size of graphics in the signature, even if it is made up of several individual graphic files, must not exceed a total of 60kb in file size, and all image files together must fit within a 500 pixels wide x 150 pixels tall box.
"¢ Users may have 4 lines of text (including links), each no more than 80 characters (including spaces) per line. Please note that an empty row with no text is still considered a "line of text".

As soon as possible, please revise your signature to the allowed 4 lines of text from your current 12 lines (including empty rows). If you have difficulty editing your signature yourself, one of the Ubi Community Managers or I will be glad to do it for you.

Now on to the destruction of your computer.

1. If installed (a)properly (b)on a malware-free system (c)with a healthy Registry and (d)up-to-date device drivers and CD/DVD drive firmware, Revelation will not cause any system problems whatsoever. All too often, however, folks:
-- a. Don't properly maintain Windows, in terms of applying all of the updates/fixes, regularly and often doing complete virus/adware/spyware scans, regularly and often checking their Registry for errors, etc., etc.
-- b. Don't have appropriate anti-malware apps installed, updated, and running.
-- c. Don't disable their anti-virus/adware/spyware/pop-up software before installing a program.
-- d. Leave lots of unnecessary applications and processes running in the background while installing.

With a Windows installation that already has problems, that's almost guaranteed to cause an operating system upchuck after installing a very complex program like Revelation.

You should install Revelation from a clean boot as detailed in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. That includes doing steps 1 through 5 and step 9 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up, and doing what's necessary under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, "1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments".

2. If you accepted the install defaults, Revelation's registration program is in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\register. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and:
-- a. Using Windows Explorer, browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\register\na
----- 1. Double-click on RegistrationReminder.exe to run it.
----- 2. Click on the Never register radio button, then on OK.
-- b. Rename RegistrationReminder.exe to something like OLD_RegistrationReminder.exe, and close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.
-- c. Then use the System Configuration utility to check for and remove a Registration startup entry. (See How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP for details.)
----- 1. Click on Start > Run, and type msconfig.exe in the Open: box.
----- 2. Click on OK to run the program.
----- 3. Click on the Startup tab and look in the list for a Myst IV Registration entry.
----- 4. If you find a Myst IV Registration entry, un-check its box, click on Apply, and then on OK.
----- 5. Reboot.
