"We have a player in the spoiler forum who has big trouble playing pass the spider chair...click here

He has SP2 installed and I am wondering if it could be one of his problems ?

Thanks."

I replied to that thread with the following, but thought I should put it in as a topic to be sure, so pardon me for the duplication.

I am the person(I am a woman)that is being referred to in this post. My problem is, that the blue crystal in the Spire chair game will not keep vibrating the second one of the other cables are are moved to set the third set of coordinates. I have tested it alone, and it does the same thing the second another slider is moved. It vibrates like crazy, and then stops immediately. If you don't touch another slider, it vibrates forever and never stops. It doesn't seem to have a timer on it. I don't see anything moving around it on close-up. My original question to the tech people on the main UBI website, was if this was a possible glitch, and sent them my Dxdiag along with my Msinfo32, and they seemed to think it was a gameplay issue. This is why I never posted it here. I can finish this puzzle in 30 seconds or less with everything vibrating but the blue crystal, because it stops immediately. I have the patch, I have two of the best walkthrus on the internet, and timing out is not my problem. So, what is it, then? Why won't it keep vibrating for the 20 seconds or so it's supposed to after it's set? I've done a clean reboot FIVE times now, and have done everything that was suggested including defragging, BUT remove SP2 which I have never had a problem with. I'd prefer not to remove it, because I don't see what this has to do with my security settings on my PC. The other puzzles work just fine, and I had no problem. Here is my Dxdiag:

Somebody in this forum just pointed out to me that I may not be taken seriously because of my quote "You know, you could take that a thousand different ways..." I thought quotes were supposed to be favorite sayings of yours, but it apperently isn't in this forum. It is a family joke and has nothing to do with my problem, so my sincerest apologies to you if it was taken in the wrong context. I removed it, and I still need help.

Personally, I don't understand why your quote would lead to your not being taken seriously. Since it didn't appear to have anything to do with the problem, I simply ignored it!

Be that as it may, I've got time issues right now, but I'll give you some suggestions tomorrow.

Well, it's all water under the bridge, now... I don't pay much attention to the quotes, either. I did notice something else about the blue crystal while trying to get it to keep vibrating as the last combination. I did get them all to vibrate by putting it in last, but nothing happened. When I do a close up on the crystal, I noticed that it doesn't go all the way in. It doesn't go in at all. It just vibrates in its hole. The spring isn't all scrunched up like the rest of the rocks/crystals. It's still stretched out, and nothing is circling around the circle while its vibrating. Just something to think about. I think it must be a glitch in my game, or there is something else going on that I don't know about that would scrunch up that spring like the rest of them so it would time out like the rest of them do (which it doesn't). Actually, it only stops when I move another slider. I'm just praying for a saved game fix from someone. I've done just about all I can do in the game without Spire...

Right now, I wouldn't recommend uninstalling SP2. Maybe later!

The Revelation patches are available here. I recommend applying the 1.02 patch and then the 1.03 patch. The 1.02 patch is 41.1 MB, while the 1.03 patch is only 15.4 MB, which may mean there's more "goodness" included in 1.02 than in 1.03. Apply the patches as follows, being certain to log into Windows with full Administrator privileges:
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Browse to myst4_v1.00_to_v1.02_pc.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- e. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults.
-- f. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- g. Close all open applications.
-- h. Click on Start > Run.
-- i. Browse to myst4_v1.0_to_v1.03_pc.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open: box.
-- j. Click on OK to start the install process.
-- k. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults.
-- l. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- m. Play Revelation, and try the blue crystal.

Take a look at Myst IV Revelation Walkthrough by Bert Jamin, Spire Chapter, in particular the paragraphs that start with:
-- "Take a look at the gears and notice that there is a little lever attached to each gear. By pulling that...."
-- "You can only move the gears down. So if you make a mistake...."
-- "Have a look at the pictures of the note about the quartz crystal. The first one shows...."
-- "Now have a look at the pictures of the notes about the rock. The notes indicate that...."
-- "Now have a look at the picture of the notes about the blue crystal. The notes show you that...."
-- "The next alternative solution to the lock puzzle is contributed by J. Brian Kelley: "

To verify that you don't have a gameplay issue, replay the Spire crystal lock puzzle as per the above paragraphs in the order shown. (Don't just say, "Yeah, yeah, I did all that." Replay it!) If you continue to have the blue-crystal problem after a careful replay, try the following:

1. Update your video driver to NVIDIA's ForceWare version 91.47. If version 91.47 doesn't help, install version 77.77 (or 71.84). Install the driver(s) exactly as instructed in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP under Installing NVIDIA Drivers, "5. Here's the driver installation procedure." You need to install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c only once. When driver installation is complete, play Revelation.

2. Update your sound driver. Gateway drivers for your 510 T Home Computer R0 (part number 2900447) are available starting here. The best way to find a driver is by entering your serial number. When driver installation is complete, play Revelation.

3. If none of the above help, re-install Revelation from a clean boot exactly as per the instructions in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, "8. Clean-boot Revelation Re-install, Previous Installation". To prepare for the re-installation, carry out step 4 (clearing caches, etc.) under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up.

BTW, if you don't already have the URL, Gateway's documentation downloads for your 510 T are available here.

Thanks for the information. I am very familiar with Bert Jamin's walkthru. It's the main one I've been using. It's better than Coelho Buda's because of the pictures. I found an upgrade for my Soundmax. I did all my upgrades from Gateway (and it cost me a pretty penny, too!), so am familiar with the website. I also found the upgrade for my Nvidia, so this is what I'll try once more, for the 6th time. Do the clean reboot per the instructions provided, add the sound upgrade, apply the patches (again), play the game up to the chair, and if it doesn't work, put in the Nvidia 91.47 upgrade (another 2 hour download, it looks like) per their instructions to shut down all my other stuff running in the background. They sisn't say it had issues with SP2, just other antivirus software and spyware. If that doesn't work, Then I'll look for and download the 77.77 (or 71.84). I have two questions. Do I need to reinstall the game and do all the above again before I do the upgrade(s) to Nvidia? What order would you recommend that I install all of the above if that is the case? You don't need to worry about rushing the answer. All this is going to take me awhile. If patience is truly a virtue, I must have a VIP seat waiting for me in heaven! LOL This has been the most frustrating and nit-picky game I have ever tried to play, and I'm not talking about the gaming part! Smash Thanks again for your help. We'll see if we can get anywhere one more time...

One thing you can try before any of the above is both parts of step 2 (changing video settings) in Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems. Changing video settings may not help, but it's at least worth a try and doesn't involve downloading anything.

Q. Do I need to reinstall the game and do all the above again before I do the upgrade(s) to Nvidia? What order would you recommend that I install all of the above if that is the case?
A. You do NOT need to re-install the game and do all the above again before changing video drivers. Do the above - one time for each step - in the order shown. That is:
-- 1. Apply both patches, following the instructions.
-- 2. Replay Spire to verify that you don't have a gameplay issue.
-- 3. Change your video driver. Do NOT install a video driver from Gateway, only drivers downloaded from NVIDIA! Follow the installation instructions in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP.
----- a. Install NVIDIA's GeForce version 91.47 per the instructions. Then play Revelation.
----- a. If version 91.47 doesn't help, install version 77.77 per the instructions. Then play Revelation.
----- b. If version 77.77 doesn't help, install version 71.84 per the instructions. Then play Revelation.
-- 4. Install the latest sound driver from Gateway, then play Revelation.
-- 5. Re-install Revelation from a clean boot, exactly as per the instructions in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Then play Revelation.

The latest sound driver from Gateway for your Intel Midway motherboard (part #2520914) is SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Driver Version: 5.12.01.5240, Soundmax5240.exe, released 3/22/05. Install as follows:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Download Soundmax5240.exe to the Desktop. ("Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading any driver.)
-- c. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
-- d. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the sound driver/SoundMAX entry.
-- e. Click on Change (or Change/Remove). If prompted to confirm program removal, click Yes.
-- f. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop.
-- g. Reboot. Cancel any attempt by Windows to install a driver for your SoundMAX chipset during bootup.
-- h. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- i. Disable your anti-virus/adware/spyware/pop-up software.
-- j. Soundmax5240.exe is a self-extracting archive. Double-click on Soundmax5240.exe to expand its contained files to the C:\Cabs\Soundmax5240 folder.
-- k. Click on Start > Run.
-- l. Type C:\Cabs\Soundmax5240\Setup.exe in the Open: box. Or, Browse... to C:\Cabs\Soundmax5240 and double-click on Setup.exe to put this file in the Open: box.
-- m. Click on OK to start the installation process.
-- n. Follow the installation Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults whenever possible.
-- o. Reboot when driver installation is complete.
-- p. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and play Revelation.

Okay. We're on the same page. I already installed the exact same Soundmax driver, so we are okay there. I did the Bios check for the correct motherboard and it matched, so didn't anticipate any problems with it, and had none. I did research the suggested drivers on Nvidia's web site and read the installation instructions. Will go over all again if I have to download the video driver(s)I'll try the video settings. What the heck, I've gotten this far without shooting myself... Hammer I'll get back to you when all has been done (I'm up to reinstalling the patches at this point) and let you know how things turn out. I hope it will be good news!

NVIDIA's Driver Installation Hints:

• "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.

• Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

• Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Driver installation instructions from Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP:

"Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading any drivers or DirectX.

-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- b. Install or re-install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available here, and reboot.
-- c. Uninstall the existing NVIDIA driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
----- 2. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the NVIDIA driver you want to remove.
----- 3. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
----- 5. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- d. If prompted, cancel the installation of the display adapter during bootup. If given a choice of default drivers to install, select 'Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)'. Reboot if prompted.
-- e. Close all unnecessary applications and processes running in the background, including anti-virus software. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
----- 1. Close your Internet connection.
----- 2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager.
----- 3. Click on the Applications tab.
----- 4. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
----- 5. Click on End Task.
----- 6. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary applications are closed.
----- 7. Click on the Processes tab.
----- 8. Click on the desired process to highlight it.
----- 9. Click on End Process.
---- 10. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background processes are closed. If you aren't sure which applications and processes can be safely closed, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.

DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing step e., especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers, who are not your friends!

-- f. Click on Start > Run.
-- g. Browse to the NVIDIA driver installer file, and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.
-- h. Click on OK to start installation process.
-- i. Follow the extraction Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults.
-- j. Reboot when prompted.

Sorry, I had to go out of town for a bit. I installed the video driver (91.47)exactly as requested, and nothing changed. I did notice one thing I hadn't, before. I turned my sound up higher, and noticed when all the locks were vibrating (even the blue crystal one when I put it in last), I could hear what sounded like a skipped record in the sound. I guess you'd call it a loop, nowadays, but it sounded like a record skipping without the click it makes when you have a scratched record on a phonograph. I think something in my system is conflicting with the code in the game to unlock the locks, which I'm sure you have already deduced, but I'm done trying to find out. I got the saved game from BulaRae, and that fixed everything. I finished the game last night after I got back. BulaRae said that she wasn't sure what I had set the gears for, but when she changed them to the correct settings, the game worked for her. I KNOW they were set right, as I was using Coelho Buda's and Bert Jamin's walkthrus, which were very insistent upon getting this part right. Setting them at 3 clicks, 2 clicks, and 6 clicks. You can also count the grooves in the gears from the bottom counting backwards beginning with 8 to make sure you have the things set with the geartooth in the right groove. Besides, the locks won't vibrate if the thing isn't set right. So, that was definitely not the problem. MANY thanks for all your help and sweating this through with me. I got an updated sound drive and video driver out of it, so that's nothing to sneeze at. I probably wouldn't even have done that if you hadn't suggested it, and it always needs to be done eventually. I am one happy customer, even if we never did find out what was causing it. Smile
