I just installed Myst 4 onto my computer and installed the 1.2 patch. When trying to run the game I would get an error saying something about not being able to write to G: drive. I updated to the final patch, and now no longer have this error, but still crash to the desktop after the splash screen.
After browsing the forums, I noticed that it is recommended that users check to make sure their G: drive is not a virtual drive. My problem is that I have a physical slave drive labeled G: Do you believe this could be my problem (all my other computer specs fall in line with everything stated here, from hardware to DX versions), and if so, any solutions? Thanks! |

Look on the first page of this very forum, there are a couple of threads that might help you.

The My Documents thing fixed it for me (I had tried that already, but didn't realize I actually needed to point the MY DOCUMENTS target link to that folder).
However, my audio is now very crackly during cut scenes. Any clues? |

I found that by increasing the paging file size for the drive my game is installed on all the way to max (4095 or something around that) that most sound problems are solved (even 2000 didn't do it for me). I still get cracklies in transitions, but not so bad.

Have you installed the latest driver for your sound chipset?
Have you correctly installed the proper driver for your video chipset and Revelation, as detailed in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Yes and yes. I went through about every possible driver update a few weeks ago for another game that I finally got running smooth.
However I am running Windows 2000 Pro (I find it more stable than XP). Myst 4 did run fine on my previous machine with Win2k as well - and about the only things that have changed since my last upgrade was the ram technology (Now have DDR), and a faster processor. Thanks for taking the time out to reply. If you have any more ideas, I'm listening. Thanks! |

Does that mean a new motherboard, or only a new CPU and RAM? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Yes, it is a new Motherboard as well. I'm not sure the info on it - but both the old and the new one came from Dell computers. Are you thinking like a bios update or something along those lines? Thanks for sticking with me!

Probably not a BIOS update. My experience has been that a BIOS update should be applied ONLY if it fixes a problem specifically mentioned in the update notes. The reason is that a BIOS update has a reasonable chance of trashing the BIOS EEPROM/flash memory chip, especially if a number of updates have already been carried out. (EEPROM's can be safely re-programmed only about 5 times before they crater, and a "weak" EEPROM may crater with the first update.) A trashed EEPROM results in your PC becoming a very expensive doorstop!
However, Dell's website may have motherboard chipset updates available. If you can tell me which Dell motherboard you've got, I'll tell you what you should download. Look at your sales receipt or the motherboard's box for a model number. Or, physically look at the motherboard for a model number sticker or a silk-screened model number marking on the board itself. Note that a sticker might be on the case side of the expansion card connector furthest to the right as you're facing the back of the case. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |
