Hi, I am having the same problem as a lot of people here wherein the game will crash back to the desktop after almost loading in. A search of the forums found this statement,

"The SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS on the back of the Revelation slipcase/box and the Ubisoft Store's Revelation website list the ONLY video chipsets supported by Revelation:
-- ATI Radeon 7000 to 9800 or better
-- NVIDIA GeForce 1/2/3/4/FX families
-- Matrox Parhelia (PC only)
-- Intel i865G to i915G (PC only)"

I have a good comp that is running WinXP Home SP2, an AMD Athlon64 3800+, 2GB of Crucial ram and an ASUS Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS (PCI-E, 512MB) graphics card with the latest drivers. Is this the problem as geforce cards newer than 4 are not listed.

Those were the only video chipsets supported by Revelation when the game was originally released in 2004. Later NVIDIA chipsets, like your GeForce 7600 GS, are also supported.

However, you may have a driver and/or hardware problem, or maybe a Revelation installation problem. If you'll post a DxDiag report in this topic so that we can take a look at your system, we'll try to help. See [Posting Guidelines] Help! I'm Having Technical Problems and I Don't Know Why!?! under To post a DxDiag report for a how-to.

Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs before saving the report to a file, and post *ALL* of the contents of the file. If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information', System Manufacturer and System Model at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard.

Also include any relevant information about the crashes. For example, do you get error messages when the crashes occur, and if so, what are the messages? Do you have to reboot to recover from the crashes, that is, does your PC lock up? What do you see on the screen just before a crash? Does the screen go black? Etc., etc.

Please find below my dxdiag report. I built the system myself but the fileds at the beginning of the report seem to be filled in ok.
The components I have are as follows:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU,
Foxconn NF4SK8AA-8KRS Motherboard,
2GB Crucial ram,
250GB Hitachi HD & 200GB Maxtor HD,
Emprex 16x dual layer dvd-rw/r burner,
Asus Nvidia 7600 GS GPU (512MB PCI-E)

The first problem was not recognising the correct cd rom in the drive and just refused to run fullstop. After using a fix i found on this site, it then went a far as showing the auto run menu. After clicking play, the screen went black with an hour glass spinning and then just crashed back to the desktop.

Questions:

1. To which of your various hard drives or partitions did you install Revelation, C:, D:, E:, F:, I:, or J:?

2. When you installed NVIDIA’s ForceWare 93.71 video driver, did you first uninstall your existing video driver, reboot, and install 93.71 over the Windows default driver?

3. NVIDIA has released a WHQL driver package for nForce 400/405/410/430 motherboards, available here. Have you installed this package?

1) I installed it on to E drive.

2) Yes I uninstalled and rebooted. I disconnected from the net first so I managed to stop windows installing its own drivers.

3) No. I was not aware of this fact. Do I install it over the top of my existing drivers or uninstall my present ones?

Don’t do anything with the WHQL driver package just yet.

Having Revelation installed on E: may be at least part of the problem. The game wants your \Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames folder to be on your C: drive. If that's not the case, Revelation tends to crash.

Check the location of your \My Documents folder, and restore to its default location on the C: drive if that’s not where it is. Also make certain that \My documents contains the proper Revelation folders.
-- a. Click on Start, then right-click on My Documents.
-- b. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Properties.
-- c. On the My Documents Properties sheet, click on the Target tab.
-- d. Under Target folder location, click on Restore Default.
-- e. Click on Apply > OK.
-- f. If it doesn't exist, create the subfolder \myst4-revelation savegames in your \My Documents folder.
----- 1. Open a Windows Explorer session and browse to C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents.
----- 2. Click on \My Documents to highlight the folder.
----- 3. Click on File on the top taskbar, then click on New > Folder.
----- 4. Type myst4-revelation savegames in the New Folder box, then press Enter.
-- g. If it doesn't exist under \My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames, create the sub-subfolder \journal. You should end up with C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames\journal.
-- h. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- i. Start Revelation.

Thank you Heimdall G. The game is now running fine. I changed the location of the My Docs folder and then re-installed Myst IV with both the 1.02 and 1.03 patches.
It now runs like a dream :-)
