I was able to install the game. When I try to play it the mouse is impossible to control. It moves erratically and I cannot make any fine movements with the cursor, which makes it frustratingly impossible to play the game. Also the video is very choppy and out of sync with the sound. I would appreciate any help you can give.

From one of your earlier posts, “I do not plan to spend hours…trying to fix my system to play this game.” If that’s truly your position, don’t bother reading any further - just trash-can your copy of Revelation (or sell it on eBay). For Revelation, and especially with your system, it’s a case of no pain, no gain!

Your on-board/integrated GeForce2 video chipset operates with only 32 MB of RAM (shared with system RAM, at that), is old and slow, and may not be capable of supporting Revelation. That’s the most likely cause of your erratic mouse and choppy video problems.

If you’re willing to spend some time, here are a few suggestions.

1. Try the general and in-game video setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP. Include re-setting your Desktop screen resolution to 800x600, in addition to the other changes.

2. Close all unnecessary applications and processes (including anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up software) running in the background, as detailed in step 4 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP. Then play Revelation.

3. Reset both the initial size and maximum size of your virtual memory paging file to 1024 MB, as detailed in step 3 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP.

4. If you didn't install NVIDIA's ForceWare 93.71 video driver as detailed under Installing NVIDIA Drivers in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, re-install the driver per that procedure. However, since 93.71 is really too recent for the GeForce2 chipset, you may need to try 45.23, and then 52.16 if necessary.

5. Install the latest driver from Microsoft for your USB Wheel Mouse Optical, IntelliPoint 6.1. Start here.

6. Re-install Revelation from a clean boot as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. It would be a really good idea to carry out steps 1 through 5 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up before re-installing.

I did most of what you suggested with no change whatsoever and got frustrated with it again. So I finally went out looking to see what a new graphics card would cost. I decided on a GeForce 5200/256 because it had a big increase in memory and a small price. Now I can't get that to work because the GeForce 2 is onboard. I have tried everything. I emailed Nvidia tech support tonight so I will see what they have to say. The pc recognizes the card but when I plug my monitor into it, I only get a blank screen. I tried disabling the onboard video and deleting the software for it. When I start the pc with the monitor plugged into the onboard video and look in display properties, the 5200 is listed as a second monitor. I checked the BIOS and I don't see anything there about display options.

So now I have a new problem to solve. But hopefully when the card problem is solved, Myst will play. The reason I decided to try it because I would like to also play Uru and End of Ages so I thought it was worth a small amount of money to try this. Do you have any ideas on what might be going on with the card installation?

Is the GeForce 5200 a PCI card or is it AGP?

If it’s PCI, it makes a difference which PCI slot the card is in. A PCI video card shouldn’t be in the slot next to the AGP slot (which is slot 1), but rather in slot 2 or 4.

Well wouldn't you think they might include that information somewhere in the installation instructions? I hope it is that simple. I'll try tonight and let you know if I have success. Thank you - again! How on earth do you find time to provide so much help to everyone? Glad you are there.

Gosh, doesn't everybody know that a PCI card...? (rhetorical question, of course)

How do I find time? Well, I've finally retired, but I'm not going to sit on the porch in my rocker. Helping out in these Myst-series Forums is one of my current pursuits.

Said pursuits also include PC consulting, harassing of Homeowners' Associations (when they deserve it), on-line gaming, etc. For example, if you're ever on-line in Battlefield 2142, look for Thor OAG222 destroying the enemy along the Suez Canal. And I'm also Heimdall in Uru Live!

Ah... retired, a great retiriement past time, I'll keep that in mind.

Well guess what, it didn't work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the card several times, each time disabling the onbaord video first. No luck - no display. Also each time I disable and reinstall, the GeForce 2 gets reinstalled and enabled even though I cancel Windows attempts to get me to install software for it. I'm stumped. The only other thing I am worried about is that the card requires at least a 250 watt power supply. I can't read the tiny writing on the power supply and Sony can't seem to tell me what it is. I'll have to find a magnifying glass I can get in there with, my eyes aren't what they used to be. I know - I can get my granddaughter to look with her young eagle eys - she can always see everything.

The Myst games are the only good adventure games left, everything else is fighting/killing and monsters and role playing - I don't like any of those. Do I have to get a new computer to play Myst? What were they thinking?

I have a couple of days off, so I feel like I can spend a little time on this tomorrow. Thanks
Bonnie

Do you have only 3 PCI slots? If so, what my earlier post should have said was that a PCI video card shouldn't be in the slot next to the AGP slot, this PCI slot being slot 1, but rather in PCI slot 2 or 3.

The marketing specs for your PCV-RXA842 say that its power requirements are “100-120V -3A (50/60Hz)”, which should mean that the power supply is 330 watts. However, by all means have your granddaughter check the PS label to verify. If you need to remove the PS to see the label, doing so is part of the “How to open the case on the PCV-RX series Sony VAIO desktop computers“ video tutorial available here.

You’re experiencing a common problem with integrated video chipsets when a PCI video card is installed. Most motherboards will auto-sense when a new AGP video card is installed and deactivate the integrated chipset, but this often doesn’t happen with a PCI video card. A PCI card usually requires that a BIOS setting be manually changed or a change be made within Windows to disable the integrated chipset.

Sony PC’s are notorious for having an idiotically-simple BIOS, and I’m not surprised that you couldn’t find an entry for disabling the integrated video chipset. To disable the chipset from within Windows, you should have done the following:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel, then click on Control Panel, Switch to Classic View.
-- c. Click on System > Hardware > Device Manager > Display adapters.
-- d. You should see entries for the GeForce FX 5200 and the integrated chipset. Double-click on the integrated chipset entry to get to its Properties page.
-- e. On the General tab in the Device usage: box, select “Do not use this device (disable)”. **Note: Do NOT uninstall, as in Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click on the integrated chipset entry, then click on Uninstall.**
-- f. Make certain that “Do not use this device (disable)” continues to show in the Device usage: box, then click on OK > Yes to reboot.

During bootup, Windows should install the GeForce FX 5200, which it’ll do automatically if you have ForceWare 93.71 installed. The integrated chipset should not be installed during bootup and should continue to show up in Device Manager as disabled.

BTW, if you don’t already have the URL, all of the downloads and information from Sony for your PCVRXA842 are available starting here.

I did know about the Sony webpage for updates but I just looked at it again and there is a BIOS update there. I suppose I should do that. When I bought the card, I could have gotten an AGP version but I didn't know it would make a difference and also I wasn't sure I had an open AGP slot, I knew I had a PCI open.
I had the card in slot 2, moved it to 3, didn't put it in 4 because the modem is there. I could move the modem because I don't use it. I will try that and check the power supply (I watched the tutorial so I can pull it out to look at it - maybe while I am at it and have access to memory slots under the PS, I should upgrade the memory also) and upgrade the BIOS. Then I will try to disable the onboard again and see what happens. I sure don't want to buy another computer - I just bought a house and it is sucking up my paycheck. Sigh...
Thanks

I moved the card to slot 4. I decided to try to see what would happen if I let the boot up go for a while even though it did not show any display with the new card. When it sounded like it was at the network login, I typed in my password and an error dialog box popped up: Mode not supported:
H 45.0 KHZ
V 95.7 HZ
So (I know I shouldn't but I did) I moved the cable to the onboard video so I could see what was on the screen and it was an error message for the Windows login, which I don't use. So I canceled that and got to the network login and moved the cable back to the new card, typed in my password and my desktop came up but without any icons or any sign of Windows. I moved the cable again to onboard and saw my usual desktop with the onboard video. This only works on the 2nd serial port on the new card, no display on the 1st.
OK, the PS. Here is exactly what is printed on it:
Input
100v-24v ~4.2A
50/60 Hz
Output
+5v 25A Max
+3.3v 13A Max
+12v 15A Max
-12v 0.2A Max
+12vsp 1.2A Max
Aux +5vb 1.8A LSP output
+12v, +12vsp Total 180 W max
+5v, +3.3v Total 146.3 W max
DC output Total 268.9 W max

Next I will try the BIOS update.

Yeah, that's a 330 watt (AC) power supply. Should be OK with the new video card.

You might want to update your BIOS, on the chance that the update has a setting to disable the integrated video chipset. While the update code is actually being written to the BIOS chip, do NOT do anything else with your PC. Don’t even move the mouse.

What are the manufacturer and exact model number of your new video card, and of your monitor? And you did NOT uninstall ForceWare 93.71?

I updated the BIOS - no video setting magically appeared.
The graphics card is a PNY nVidia Verto GeForce FX 5200 DDR256 MB PCI, VCGFX522PPB,Other numbers on the card are: P162G03AB01, 7-51492-30213-3, PNY PO #TUV7322.

Monitor:The company is called V7, it is a 17 " flat screen LCD, model #700P, Product # R17PS, manufactured Aug. 2006. The power is listed on the back as AC 100-240V 50/60 HZ 1.0A - I don't know if that matters at all.

No I did not uninstall the 93.71 driver.

Hopefully, even though it’s brain-dead, your BIOS has a setting that allows making the primary display adapter the PCI card. If so, set it that way, save the settings, leave the BIOS utility, and shut down the PC. Connect your FX 5200’s primary VGA port (that's not a serial port) to your monitor, power up the PC, and reboot. Windows should recognize the FX 5200 and boot properly.

If the steps in my post above didn’t disable the integrated video chipset:
Right-click on the integrated chipset entry, then click on Disable in the resulting drop-down menu. (If the integrated chipset is already disabled, the drop-down menu will show Enable, not Disable.)

Install the driver from the CD that came with the FX 5200. Insert the installation CD into the drive, and click on the Install Driver option on the Installation menu screen. (If the CD doesn't autostart, click on Start > Run, and browse to Launch.exe on the CD. Double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK.) For details, see "Chapter 3 - Software Installation" in the Verto Graphic Cards Installation Guide. See also "Chapter 4 - Display Properties". Reboot when driver installation is complete.
