Hi, the animation stops (sound continues) for the observatory movie sequence where Atrius requests help. What should I do?
I have followed all the guidelines concerning movie set-up, without success. I have a Xpress200 intregated video card (AMD 64 processors, ATI technology) for a Compaq Presario. I have a lightscribe software driven CD / DVD player / writer. My computer is fully able to accept for installing the game. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Nate |

Welcome to the Forums!
Please answer the following questions: 1. Which version of QuickTime do you have installed? 2. Do you have more than one version of QuickTime installed? 3. What happens when Revelation animation stops and sound continues - any error messages, does your system crash or lock up, do you get a blue screen, etc.? Also, you may have a hardware and/or software problem. Please post a DxDiag report in a this topic, so that we can take a look at your system and make recommendations. See POSTING GUIDELINES, To post a DxDiag report, in Myst IV: System Requirements and Posting Guidelines for a how-to. Run all of the graphics and sound tests you can before saving the report to a file, and post *all* of the file! If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Greetings, Heimdall.
1. I have Quicktime 2.0 for Windows. 2. I only have one version, QuickTime 2.0 for Windows. 3. When the animation becomes problematic, the video freezes. However, the sound continues on by itself, without a hiccup. Often, the monitor screen goes blue / black. System requirements: The Myst Revelations System requirements state AMD/ATI Radeon 7000 to 9800 or later video cards are encouraged. Although my Radeon Xpress 200(ATI Athlon 64) video card is an AMD/ATI Radeon card, it is not directly mentioned on the requirement list. It is a later AMD/ATI video card integrated into the motherboard of a Compaq Presario manufactured by Hewlett Packard (HP), prior to the time of initial (my) purchase in 2006. My sound card is an AC'97 whose drive I have not updated as it would entail upgrading to MicroSoft Vista which I do not want to do right now. I am actually quite happy with XP. My DxDiag to follow in my next reply to your enquiry. Thank-you, Nate |

As a first pass, run the Revelation Configurator.
-- a. Click on Start > Run. -- b. Browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\configurator. -- c. Double-click on myst_detection.exe to put it in the Open: box. -- d. Click on OK to run the Configurator. Do you see anything but green checkmarks in the Configurator output? If, so for which item(s)? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |
|||
|
I do not have a green check mark for Troubleshooting: *reset game option (no).
*use minimal (safe) game config. (no) There are also no green check marks for System information or video capabilities. However, the rows for minimal (game) specifications are completely filled with green check marks. Nate |

Next, since the Configurator didn't find any problems, do the following.
In general: -- Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, NOT into a Limited User or Power User account. -- Close all open applications immediately after a reboot. -- Do NOT boot up with Revelation Disc #2 in the drive, or any disc in the drive. -- When ready to play Revelation, insert Disc #2 into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed. Cancel back to the Desktop if it autostarts. -- Always use the Desktop icon to start Revelation, not a disc menu item. Print out the detailed instructions below, and check off each item as you complete it. 1. Uninstall QuickTime 2.0, then install and properly configure QuickTime 6.5.2. -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Uninstall QuickTime 2.0 using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs. ----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs. ----- 2. Wait for the Currently installed programs box to populate, and click on the QuickTime entry. ----- 3. Click on Remove (or Change/Remove). ----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes. ----- 5. Check for other QuickTime entries and uninstall if found. ----- 6. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, and reboot. -- c. Go to OldVersion.com's QuickTime page, and download Quicktime652.exe (the QuickTime 6.5.2 installer). -- d. Click on Start > Run, and browse to where you saved Quicktime652.exe. -- e. Double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box. -- f. Click on OK to install QuickTime. Accept the installation defaults whenever possible. -- g. When installation is complete, close back to the Desktop. -- h. Start QuickTime 6.5.2, and click on Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences > QuickTime Settings. -- i. Scroll down to Video Settings. ----- 1. If it isn't already active, click on the Safe Mode [GDI Only] radio button to activate it. ----- 2. The Options radio button should NOT be active, with the settings under it grayed out. -- j. Close the QuickTime Settings page, and close QuickTime. -- k. Start Revelation. 2. If Revelation still doesn't start properly, run the game using Windows Compatibility Mode. Right-click on the Desktop Revelation start icon, and: -- a. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu, and click on the Compatibility tab. -- b. Under Compatibility Mode, click on the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box to check it. ----- 1. Select "Windows 98 / Windows Me" mode. -- c. Under Display settings, click on the "Disable visual themes" box to check it. Leave the other two boxes unchecked. -- d. Under Input settings, click on the "Turn off advanced text services for this program" box to check it. -- e. Click on Apply > OK. -- f. Start Revelation using the Desktop icon. 3. If none of the above help, install "ATI Catalyst™ 8.6 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition - Motherboard/IGP Drivers", available here. Carefully follow the instructions under Installing AMD/ATI Radeon Drivers, "3. Here's the driver installation procedure....", in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. Hi, Heimdall.
Well, I've went through the steps you've kindly given me. But, no go. A. Do I need to adjust Myst Revelation to have Windows compatibility to Windows 2000 or NT? or B. Do I have a faulty CD set that needs to be replaced? Thanks, Nate |

Heimdall, I have some questions for you:
1. Why did you have Permriv install a version of Quicktime that's easily 3 years old? 2. Why use Safe Mode (GDI Only) when it may only be compounding this issue by disabling any hardware acceleration that is on Permriv's machine? 3. Why suggest using compatibility mode when Permriv is using Windows XP Pro, which is an OS that Myst IV supports in its entirety? Running Myst IV in compatibility mode is not essential, seeing that it wasn't designed to run on Windows 98 or ME machines and may have trouble running on them. Sincerely, JacaByte |

|
JacaByte, what do you recommend?
I am ready to pull my hair out. I really do want to start playing the game. |

You can certainly try the Windows 2000 and NT Compatibility Modes. May help, but probably not. Anyway, it's easy enough to do.
Suggestions: 1. Your Revelation DVD's could be faulty, but that's unlikely (unless they've been exposed to high temperatures and humidity, or they're fakes/copies bought on-line from a "reputable seller"). Try cleaning the shiny sides of both discs to remove any sort of haze or film that might be interfering with disc reads. (The haze or film can be invisible to the naked eye, but not to your drive's read laser.) Use a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with either: -- Water-clear rubbing alcohol - additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green or blue color. -- A warm mild dishwashing (*NOT* dishwasher) detergent solution. In either case, instead of allowing the CD's to air-dry, manually dry them with another soft, lint-free cloth. Use a center-outward motion, NOT circular around the disc. If there are any scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail, remove them using one of the repair kits available locally or from an on-line supplier. There've been reports that cleaning the haze or film off of discs requires multiple applications of alcohol and/or dishwashing detergent solution, along with a good bit of "elbow grease" or "scrubbing" while applying the solution. You might also try that sort of thing, being careful to use very clean, soft, lint-free cloths for both application of cleaning solution and drying the discs between solution applications. (Don't let the discs air-dry!) It could also be that your drive's laser lenses have a haze or film coating that might be interfering with disc reads, but let's leave that for later. 2. Revelation may be asking for something your video chipset doesn't want to do, so try the video setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP. 3. Apply the Revelation patches, which are available here. I recommend applying the 1.02 patch and then the 1.03 patch. The 1.02 patch is 41.1 MB, while the 1.03 patch is only 15.4 MB, which may mean there's "good stuff" included in 1.02 that isn't included in 1.03. Apply the patches as follows: -- a. Log into Win XP with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Click on Start > Run. -- c. Browse to myst4_v1.00_to_v1.02_pc.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open: box. -- d. Click on OK to start the install process. -- e. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults. -- f. Reboot when installation is complete. -- g. Close all open applications. -- h. Click on Start > Run. -- i. Browse to myst4_v1.0_to_v1.03_pc.exe, and double-click on it to put it in the Open: box. -- j. Click on OK to start the install process. -- k. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and accept the install defaults. -- l. Reboot when installation is complete. -- m. Log into Win XP with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- n. Play Revelation. 4. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be causing your Revelation problem. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs. For instructions, see step 4 in Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP. 5. Re-install Revelation from a clean boot. Follow the instructions under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, "8. Clean-boot Revelation Re-install, Previous Installation" in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. -- a. While it's not absolutely necessary, carrying out steps 1 through 6 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP before re-installing is a *really* good idea. Even if your Revelation problem doesn't disappear, your entire system will run much better! -- b. Do a full install. BTW, it sounds like you already have the URL, but if not, HP/Compaq's software and driver downloads for your Presario Media Center SR1834NX are available here. __________________________________ Jacabyte: Q. Why install QuickTime 6.5.2? A. Version 6.5.2 was released while Revelation was being developed, and any development work on Revelation that involved QuickTime likely made use of this version. Also, QuickTime seems to have loaded quite a bit more "stuff" into the later releases, which doesn't bode well for a Revelation-related fix. Q. Why use Safe Mode (GDI Only)? A. It's easy and quick to try, doesn't require any great amount of effort, can be changed to the DirectX-related "Options" with a few mouse clicks - and may help. Q. Why suggest using compatibility mode? A. Compatibility mode has successfully solved related Revelation problems in the past. Again, it's easy and quick to try, doesn't require any great amount of effort, can be changed with a few mouse clicks - and may help. If you can point to anything in permriv's details and DxDiag report that's the cause of the animation problem, you should certainly do so. And provide a solution, of course. I've got a hunch. I'm not sure if this is exactly the problem, but this has worked for me in the past.
permriv: When you installed Revelation, did you perform a "Quick" Install or a "Full" Install? In a quick install, only the files that are essential to running Revelation are loaded on to your hard drive while movies and such are loaded off of the discs. In a full install, everything is being put onto the hard drive. It might not fix the problem, but you should probably install the full version of Revelation instead of the quick install. Also, could you tell us how large the Myst IV folder on your hard disk is? Right click on the folder containing the Myst IV application and select "Properties." Then tell us what the size of the folder is, it should be about 3.5 GB for a quick install and about 8 GB for a full install. I suspect that Myst IV is missing movie files and this will tell us for sure. (Assuming that the introductory movie with Yeesha played alright.) Do all this after completing the new instructions Heimdall gave you. Re-installing Myst IV is usually reserved as a last resort. To the world, you are only one person. Jacabyte, I want to thank-you as well as Heimdall for keeping your eye on me. I really appreciate your faithfulness and thoroughness.
You are right. I checked on the properties for the Myst Revelation folder and I have only 7.10 MB (7,454,597 bytes) listed - not the 8 MB. Perhaps, the folder is missing movie files. I did perform a "full" install when I re-installed Revelation several weeks ago when these problems started appearing. By the way, with Heimdall's advice, I can operate the game, although at 25 % capacity for sound and video. Permriv |

Well, if your folder is truly only 7.1 MB in size, then I'd call that the problem. But because you said the folder should be 8 MB instead, I'd like to ask if you meant GB. (Gigabytes, or 1,000 MB [Technically 1024]) There's a huge difference between GB and MB, so I'd like to make sure. (Just for reference, the folder with Myst IV should be 7,536,476,404 bytes in size, which is equal to 7 GB when 1 GB = 1,024 MB = 1,048,576 KB = 1,073,741,824 Bytes, because Windows is weird like that. So I was off by one GB.

Thanks for your kind attention.
On further examination, I find that the Myst Revelation folders / files are scattered between simply being under the C drive, to being under the document & settings folder, to being under the programs generaL folder. Should all the folders for Myst Revelation reside under c:/ Program Files? Primriv |

For a full Revelation install using the default paths and English as the language, here are the folders/subfolders/files you should have:
-- C:\Documents and Settings\<yourusername>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames, number of files varies depending on your saves, total size depends on number of files -- C:\Documents and Settings\<yourusername>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames\journal, number of files varies depending on your journal entries, total size depends on number of entries -- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin, 70 files, 21.2 MB total ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\configurator, 26 files, 4.96 MB total ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\updatelauncher, 12 files, 3.06 MB total -- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\data, 11 files, 6.48 GB total ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\data\english, 2 files, 4.96 MB total -- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support, no files, only subfolders ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\manual\english, 1 file, 6.03 MB ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\readme\english, 1 file, 32.0 KB ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\register\emea, 7 files, 576 KB total ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\register\emea\register, 3 files, 1.12 MB total ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\register\emea\register\dll, 20 files, 4.93 MB total ---- C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\support\register\na, 5 files, 1.09 MB total C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation totals 7.01 GB in 158 files. If that's not what you have, do a full Revelation re-install from a clean boot. See suggestion 5 in my post of Thu July 10 2008 15:39, above. Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Heimdall,
I finally got the game to work in full. It has frozen just once. If this becomes a problem, I'll add the fixes you suggest. Nate |
