Okay, here's the deal. I finally got Myst Revelation for Christmas after asking for it for at least two years. now, I can't install it on my computer because I cannot find the common/data/english/data.m4b thing. Now, I know I have the file but every time I try to download it, it doesn't seem to work at all! I've loked at so many pages but none of them seem to help. Please, lend me a hand! I'll do just about anything!

Hi,
Keep in mind I am not a computer expert. I will try to fill the "void" until a real one comes to your rescue. Because it is very hard to guess what you are trying to do, I will ask you for more informations. 1- What is the make and model of your computer ? 2- What is the version of your operating system ? 3- Are you trying to install this game with original/new CDs ? 4- Are you the only one using the computer ? 5- Are you using a computer account with full administrative priviledges ? 6- If you are installing with DVDs, do you have a DVD reader drive ? As you see, the more infos you give us, the easier it will be to make suggestions. Btw, I have installed and played many games on my PC (Windows XP) and I always let the Installation Wizard choose its own default path for the installations with no problems. |

I have an HP Pavillion and I think its a 2000. I don't really know if these are the orginal CDs so how can I tell? I have a DVD drive but its one of those DVD-RW drives and I usually am the only one using the computer.

Where did you buy the game ? Were the CDs in a box ? Did it come with a manual ? If yes (it should be in the box), did you check it for installation instructions ? I have the Limited Edition (2 DVDs) and Myst 3 Exile as a bonus (1 DVD)
The word "usually" is not good enough. Are you playing/installing in the administrator's account or from a sub account ? Sub account with full administrative priviledges or not ? You forgot to tell about your Operating system. Windows XP ? ___________________________________________ Did you read this post in the "stickies" at the top of this forum ? "Before Asking For Help: Look Here First!!" click here ___________________________________________ My best suggestion at the moment would be to ask help from a friend who has enough experience with installing/playing many games. Here is an image (from a Google image search) of my box version.

At a first glance your problem seems to be related to an older DVD drive that might not be able to read your DVDs properly.
I did some searches in here and found this post from our expert Heimdall G. that may be of help...click here It tells you on how to proceed to install the missing files. Note that this is beyond my limited expertise and that beyond this point, I will not be able to help you more. |

Don't believe that Myst IV: Patch for Please Insert Correct CD Error will solve the problem. Good try, though!
Quaxo-Jane, a couple things: 1. Regarding the question of whether you're the only one using the computer, have you set up a Limited User Account for sis and the kids to use. That's a really good idea, especially since if the the kids log into your Administrator account, they can easily trash your PC to the extent of making it unusable! To set up a Limited User Account and protect your PC: -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Click on Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. -- c. Click on Create a new account. -- d. Type a name for the new account in the box, and click on Next. -- e. Click on Limited to select it, then click on Create Account. You should now see an icon for the new account you've created. -- f. Click on the new account's icon to open the account change options menu. -- g. Click on Create a passowrd, and type in what's required. Preferably use a password that the kids can remember. -- h. Click on Create Password. -- i. Close back to the Desktop, and reboot. The new account should show up during the login process. Try logging into it to make sure it works. And don't forget the password! If you've given the kids your Administrator Account password, best you change it!! -- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. -- b. Click on Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. -- c. Click on the icon for your Administrator Account, then click on Change my password. -- d. Type in what's required, then click on Change Password. -- e. Close back to the Desktop, and reboot. Try logging into your Administrator Account to make certain the new password works. See How to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP for details, and Unable to Create a Standard or Limited User Account if you have problems. 2. Let's establish how this all started, and go from there. Did you get the following error message, or something a lot like it? "Feature:***IS_STRING_NOT_DEFINED*** Component English Data Files File D:\Common\Data\English\Data.m4b The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" If not, what was the exact wording of the error message you got? hi.
i had this same problem when i went re-install this game yesterday. got the same error message that the last reply read. but none of the instructions above the error message listed on that reply will do you any good. i found an answer that seemed to help with this problem. 1. if you have any other programs running at the same time, you will want to close those programs until you have finished installing the game. sometimes the opened programs won't allow the installation to finish. 2. you may also want to delete the temporary files (go to tools, internet options, etc.). 3. if after deleting the temp. files, you may want to defragment your pc. 4. if ur using windows vista as an os... a) do not use the install wizard. b) go to my computer-->open E:/-->find the install link-->right click--->properties-->compatibility tab-->click box that says run and highlight win 98/ME or 2000. c) repeat step b) for both disks. hope this helps. Dark Empress p.s. for more info...go to the ubi.com site and look this up under their FAQ's. |
