I installed the game and when I insert the disc it takes me to the menu with the book and all the buttons. That part works fine. But when I click play, an error message pops up that says:

Warning

DirectX cannot create the device for Ares. Get sure your desktop is in 32 bits mode (the only bit depth supported by this version of Ares).

Try setting your desktop in 32 bits now.

Filename: \Myst4\graphic\ares\private\directx\src\ares\api_device.cpp
LineNo:306

Press 'Retry' to debug

Abort Retry Ignore

When I click retry, nothing happens. When I click Ignore, it just brings up the same warning again. When I click abort, this message comes up:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Program: C:\Program Files\UBISOFT\MystIV-Revelation\bin\myst4.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

OK

I believe my desktop is set in 32 bits, so I don't know why it's saying it's not. Any help with this would be awesome.

Why don't you simply play the game on your computer without using VirtualBox?

In general,
1. Install Revelation to your C: drive, and accept the install defaults.
-- a. Be certain that Revelation is saving games on C:.
-- b. If you have a very small C: drive that's reserved for system files only, install Revelation to D:. Be certain that Revelation is saving games on D:.
2. Do NOT install Revelation to an external USB hard drive, or use an external USB DVD drive when playing the game.
3. Start Revelation from a fresh boot.
-- a. Reboot, log into Vista with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Disable all tasks running in the background, especially anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, task schedulers, remote system control programs (such as Microsoft NetMeeting) or other programs shown on the Windows task bar.
-- c. If you have only a software firewall, do NOT disable it!
-- d. Do NOT run any other programs before starting Revelation.
4. Do NOT boot up with the Revelation disc in the drive, or with a disc in any drive.
5. If the Revelation disc autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
6. Start the game using the Revelation icon on the Desktop, NOT the menu item on the disc.

Try installing Revelation from a clean boot.
-- a. Reboot, and log into Vista with full Administrator privileges. Do NOT start VirtualBox!
----- 1. Close all open applications.
----- 2. Disable all tasks running in the background, especially anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, task schedulers, remote system control programs (such as Microsoft NetMeeting) or other programs shown on the Windows task bar.
----- 3. If you have only a software firewall, do NOT disable it!
-- b. Uninstall Revelation using the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility.
----- 1. See Uninstall or change a program for details.
----- 2. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see Turn Windows features on or off.
-- c. Apply both "Step 1: Run the program installer in compatibility mode" and "Step 2: Run the program installer as an administrator" in How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer.
-- d. Do step 1 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- e. Install Revelation.
-- f. Do step 7 in How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista.
-- g. Reboot when installation is complete, close all open applications, etc., and start Revelation.

When I try to install Myst 4 on to my computer itself, it doesn't even bring up the main menu. The cd just makes the sound that seems like its running, but nothing happens.

Revelation is on a double-layer/dual-layer DVD. Historically, various DVD drives (especially DVD burners) have not been capable of properly reading dual-layer/double-layer DVD's, and yours may be one of those drives.

Disc drive firmware is software embedded in the drive's on-board controller. Sometimes, updating the firmware to the most recent version will solve a disc read problem.

As a first step, go to the Dell support website nearest you (Dell USA, Dell UK, or other). Download and install the latest firmware update for your DVD drive, then try installing Revelation again. Be very certain to install the firmware intended specifically for your GA10N drive!

The reason for being very certain to install the firmware intended specifically for your drive is that, if you install firmware for another model by mistake, you'll probably end up with a non-functioning drive.

DxDiag says that your drive is a GA10N, while the closest firmware Dell has available is for a GA11N. However, it's possible that DxDiag is showing an incorrect model number.

Suggestions:

1. If you searched the Dell support site by laptop model using "Studio 1555", try entering your Service Tag number instead. That may give you a different set of firmware choices including the GA10N. If you don't know what your Service Tag number is, go to How do I find my service tag?.

2. Use Nero's InfoTool to determine your drive's model number and firmware version.
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Download Infotool.zip.
----- 1. If Infotool.zip doesn't unzip automatically when downloading is complete, use WinZip, WinRar, etc., to extract the zipped files to a folder on your hard disk, NOT to the Desktop.
-- c. Click on Start > Run and Browse... to the folder in which you saved the extracted files.
-- d. Double-click on InfoTool.exe to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK to run InfoTool.
-- e. Allow the "retrieving information" progress bar to move completely to the right, at which point the InfoTool interface will appear. This may take several minutes, so wait for it.
-- f. Your drive's model number is shown in the box at the top right corner of the interface page. The firmware version is shown on the "Drive" tab under General.

3. If you actually do have a GA10N drive, the latest firmware update from Dell is available here or here.
-- a. Read at least the Important Information, Additional Information, and Installation Instructions.

I do actually have a GA10N and I installed the update, but Myst still won't run. Any other ideas?

The main menu doesn't even pop up, so I don't even get the option to install the game at all.

Suggestions:

1. Since your disc drive "makes the sound that seems like its running, but nothing happens", you may have a disc-read problem. This can be due to:
-- A disc that needs cleaning.
-- Disc drive laser lenses that need cleaning.
-- A disc that has scratches. If your Revelation DVD has many scratches and/or scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail (*especially* circumferential scratches), remove the scratches using one of the repair kits available from a local computer store or from an Internet supplier. Some DVD rental stores will remove scratches for you, usually for free if you're a good customer.

Your Revelation DVD's and/or your disc drive laser lenses could have developed a haze coating if you:
-- Live in a dusty area.
-- Have a smoker in the house or where you use the laptop.
-- Do not have a hood over your kitchen stove or cooktop that vents outside the house.
-- Use burning-candle or plugin (oil-dispersing) room deodorizers anywhere in the house.
-- Have subjected your DVD's to temperatures above 85-90 degrees F.
-- Have stored your DVD's for an extended period. (This is more or less a "by definition" for Revelation, since it's an old game.)

The haze can be invisible to the naked eye, but it's not invisible to your disc drive and could be what's interfering with disc reads. (This is especially true if a drive is more than about 3 years old, since read lasers tend to weaken with time. That by itself can lead to disc read problems - even without a haze. The only fix for a weak read laser is a new drive.)

The first thing to do is get rid of any haze on the DVD's. Clean the shiny sides of both Revelation discs using a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with either:
-- Water-clear rubbing alcohol - additive-free, no witch hazel or whatever, no green or blue color.
-- A warm mild dishwashing (*NOT* dishwasher) detergent solution.

Clean with either alcohol or detergent solution using a center-outward motion, NOT circular around the disc. Instead of allowing the disc to air-dry, manually dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Dry with a center-outward motion, NOT circular around the disc.

There've been posts saying that disc cleaning sometimes requires multiple applications of alcohol and/or dishwashing detergent solution, along with a good bit of "elbow grease" or "scrubbing" while applying the solution. You might also try that sort of thing, being careful to use clean, soft cloths for both application of cleaning solution and drying the disc between solution applications. (Don't let the disc air-dry!)

After you've cleaned the DVD's, again try installing Revelation.

If your disc drive's laser lenses have developed a film/haze coating (and if it's *not* an older drive), the fix is using a laser lens cleaning disc. This is essentially a disc with tiny brushes on it that take the haze off of the lenses. The best ones (especially for smokers, non-hooders, and candle burners/oilers) come with a cleaning solution used to wet the brushes, but this isn't a strict requirement. The first time you use the disc, run the cleaning cycle at least 3 times in succession.

I use the 3M Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner, but several brands are available. Some are for both CD and DVD drives, some for CD only or DVD only. There are various suppliers, both online and local computer stores. From Amazon, for example:
-- Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner for CD and DVD Players/CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Drives
-- Memorex CD/DVD-Player Laser-Lens Cleaner
-- Memorex Laser Lens Cleaner For DVD Only
-- RCA Discwasher 6-Brush Dry CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner
-- GE Laser Lens Cleaner Wet/Dry System

After you've cleaned the drive's laser lenses, again try installing Revelation.

2. If you're depending on Vista's AutoPlay to start the Revelation installation process, it may not be set correctly.
-- a. Set AutoPlay to suit your needs. See How to customize AutoPlay.
-- b. Use Windows (not Internet) Explorer to access Revelation Disc 1, and double-click on setup.exe to start installation.
-- c. Use Start > Run to install Revelation.
----- 1. Place Disc 1 in your DVD drive, and let it spin up to speed.
----- 2. Click on Start > Run.
----- 3. Browse to setup.exe on Revelation Disc 1, and double-click on this file to put it in the Open: box.
----- 4. Click on OK to start the installation process.
----- 5. Follow the installation Wizard's instructions. If you don't accept the install defaults, carefully and correctly set all of the paths. Double-check your entries for typos!
----- 6. Even if you get a "Finished" message from the install Wizard, wait for all hard disk activity to stop - then and only then close the Wizard.

Note that you must have Disc 2 in the drive to play Revelation.
