Hi, I've been walking around Haven for awhile,and occasionally (I suspect immediately before video transitions) trying to go somewhere causes the game to immediately exit. No error message or anything. I have no other graphics problems, and I have an... nVidia GeForce FX Go5100 graphics card. I've tried downloading patches, and I don't know if they work, but they haven't fixed this. I tried downloading a driver, but maybe it's the wrong one? Apparently it can't find anything compatible on my system. Help! :-)

We're getting closer!

The Toshiba Satellite P15 was released as the following models:
-- P15-S409
-- P15-S4091
-- P15-S420

Which model do you have? (From the CPU speed, it's an S420, S4201, or S470.) There should be a label with the model number on the back or bottom of the laptop. If you can't find the model number, the Toshiba part number will do. This is something like "PSP10U-3ZJ976".

And I won’t even begin to guess where your sub ubi is!

Ah. It's P15-S420.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s be certain that you understand the situation.

First, you have a laptop PC. Even though you have an NVIDIA graphics card (integrated on the motherboard), the back of the Revelation box says, “Laptop models of these cards not fully supported.” This means that video-related crashes to Desktop with Revelation won’t be unusual, and it’s possible (but not a given!) that nothing you can do will prevent such crashes.

Second, your GeForce FX Go5100 chipset is working with only 32 MB of video memory. This is the bare minimum required to do adequately anything associated with Windows, but so little video memory doesn’t allow doing anything associated with a game like Revelation very well. And since it’s a laptop, you can’t add more video memory.

With that said, some suggestions:

1. You have only 512 MB of system memory (system RAM). As with your video memory, this is the bare minimum required to do adequately anything associated with Windows. You have two memory slots, one of which is empty, so you could easily add another 512 MB memory stick. (See Installing additional memory (optional) starting on p. 62 of the Satellite P10/P15 Series User’s Guide.) This may or may not help with the Revelation crashes, but even if it doesn’t, your entire system will run *much* better.

2. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be using up memory unnecessarily and causing problems with Revelation. To prevent this, carry out step 4 in Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP.

3. Since it’s an older laptop, you could have an overheating problem.
-- a. Make certain that the case cooling vents are not blocked or partially blocked. In particular, do not play Revelation with the laptop actually on your lap, or on loose papers on your desk or table, or on a pillow or blankets, etc.
-- b. Make certain that the case cooling fan will run at maximum speed, the cooling vents aren't blocked by dust, and the inside of the case isn't clogged with dust. This is particularly likely with an older laptop!
-- c. Check your system memory stick for dust coating, and clean as necessary. See p. 62 of the User’s Guide.
-- d. Use a laptop cooler, like those found at Hardware Cooling, Xbrand, or NexTag.

3. Revelation may be asking for something your video chipset doesn't want to do or isn’t capable of doing. Try the general and Revelation in-game setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP.

4. Your current video driver is very old, but is unfortunately the latest available from Toshiba. However, a fresh install of the driver may help. Download and install Windows XP/2000 Display Driver for nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 Display, Version 4485, sp15s479vidx.exe, released 9/9/03.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available here. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- c. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- d. Download sp15s479vidx.exe to a folder, NOT to the Desktop.
-- e. Close all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up software running in the background.
-- f. Click on Start > Run, and browse to the folder where you downloaded sp15s479vidx.exe.
-- g. Double-click on sp15s479vidx.exe to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK to run it.
-- h. It’s an archive and will extract to C:\Display.temp, after which driver installation will start automatically. Accept the install defaults.
-- i. Reboot when driver installation is complete.
-- j. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- k. Play Revelation.

5. What appears to be a video problem may actually be sound-related. Again, your current sound driver is very old, but is the latest available from Toshiba. Download and re-install Windows XP/2000 Audio Driver for Realtek ALC202 Sound Systems, Version 5.10.00.5210-RC3, sp15s479sndx.exe, released 9/9/03.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. If you haven’t already done so, install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available here. Reboot when installation is complete.
-- c. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- d. Download sp15s479sndx.exe to a folder, NOT to the Desktop.
-- e. Close all anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up software running in the background.
-- f. Click on Start > Run, and browse to the folder where you downloaded sp15s479sndx.exe.
-- g. Double-click on sp15s479sndx.exe to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK to run it.
-- h. It’s an archive and will extract to C:\Audio.temp, after which driver installation will start automatically. Accept the install defaults.
