When starting the game after having saved it at five points of play, only three saves show up in the starting list. The previous day had five showing. The files exist when I look at the folder in My Documents. Two days of progress are lost. This happened to me earlier also when I had 10 or 12 saved files but I completely uninstalled the game and reinstalled to get where I am at now. Is there a way to get the game to reregister the files that exist but are not being reported? This appears to be similar to what Ladygray14 was experiencing.

Do you have a \save folder under C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation? If so, how many files are currently in the folder? Only the three saves that show up in the starting list?

The save file is located in: I:\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames. Currently, there are six saved files but only 3 show up at the start of the game. A couple of days ago, there were four files at the start of the game and when I started it the next day, only three showed up. I completely lost any progress that was made the previous day.

Assuming that your Revelation program files are in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation:
1. Open a Windows Explorer session, and browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation.
2. Create a \save subfolder under \Myst IV - Revelation.
-- a. Click once on \Myst IV - Revelation to highlight the folder.
-- b. On the top taskbar, click on File > New > Folder.
-- c. Type save in the New Folder box, then press Enter.
-- d. Create a \journal subfolder under \Myst IV - Revelation\save.
3. Browse to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin.
4. Using a text editor like Notepad, open Game.ini.
5. Change the SAVEGAME= path to SAVEGAME=/exedir/../save/.
6. Save your change to Game.ini as plain text, and close the text editor.
7. Copy *all* of the files in I:\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation/save.
8. Close all open applications, and play Revelation.

When you go to the Revelation game load menu, click on the down arrow on the right side of the list to be certain you're seeing all of the saved games.

Unfortunately, this didn't change anything. My Revelation files are installed in E:\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation. Save file already existed. Created journal sub-folder. Opened Game.ini that is in the \bin folder. SAVEGAME path already existed as shown. Copied all files from I:\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames as directed. Started game but the results were the same as before. Only two saves are now showing in the game load menu because I lost another one two days ago.

The installation of the game created the original savegame file in My Documents. Is there something else in the code that continues to direct to that location even though the game.ini file seems to indicate otherwise?

Losing your saved games may be due to having the wrong settings in a cache-cleaner utility, either stand alone or included in another program. For example, if you have ZoneAlarm's cache cleaner options set to "Clean document history", you'll lose some or all of your My Documents files every time the cache cleaner is run. If that's your situation, try changing the appropriate setting(s).

Q. Is there something else in the code that continues to direct to that location even though the game.ini file seems to indicate otherwise?
A. While I don't recall ever seeing anything to that effect, a path over-ride could be contained in autosave.m4s, default.m4s, or options.m4o. Unfortunately, these are binary files that require a "custom editor" utility to easily view and/or change their contents. Also something which I don't recall ever seeing.

With all of the files in I:\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames copied to to E:\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation/save, try renaming I:\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames to something like I:\My Documents\OLD_myst4-revelation savegames. Then play Revelation.

Still no success. There appears to be something in the game code that causes the saves to be written to the My Documents folder. I copied the files to the E:\ location and renamed the I:\My Documents\Myst IV - Revelation folder to old-myst4 - revelation. When I started the game, the load game button did not highlight. I checked the My Documents folder and the restart of the game created a new myst4 - revelation savegame folder. I exited the game, deleted the new folder and applied the origanal name back to the change. When I restarted the game, this folder was recognized. However, of the nine files in the folder, only three are showing on the start page. I have continued to replay the parts of the game that were lost and it seems that some of these files may be saves that I intentionally overwrote in the game but were not deleted or renamed because of the way the file names are assigned.

So for now, I will continue to play and keep the file list that show at the start of the game small by overwriting rather than a new save. With luck, I won't lose any more progress.

I REALLY need help with this. It is getting very frustrating to lose three days of progress when starting the game because the game code decides to read older savegame files that are in the My Documents folder and not the last ones that were saved yesterday. I have 16 saves in the folder but only 2 showed up on the load game page when starting today and those were from three days ago.

When saving a game is it better to use the default name that the game provides or simply overwrite the current game? It seems that overwriting doesn't really overwrite the existing file but adds a new one sometimes. Is the Autosave game supposed to show up at the start of the game? Sometimes it does; othertimes it doesn't.

At this point, we need to take a look at your system and see if we can spot anything. So, post a DxDiag report in this topic, as detailed in [Posting Guidelines] Help! I'm Having Technical Problems and I Don't Know Why!?! under To post a DxDiag report.

Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs before saving the report to a file, and post *ALL* of the contents of the file. If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC are not shown under 'System Information', System Model at the top of the report, also include that information in your post.

My system is not a commercial product but was built from the components shown in the following text. I have two hard drives, both having multiple partitions. The first drive is a 40 GB PATA with partions C:, D:, and E:. The second drive is a 160 GB SATA, with partions G:, H:, I:, and J:.

When I first tried to install the game to the SATA drive, I was not able to do so because the game wouldn't run from there. (I had a similar problem with Uru but got around it by making sure that the game files were loaded on the PATA drive.) I then loaded the game to the E: partion, updated the patches, and proceeded to play until I started having the problem first described.

I do appreciate all of your efforts in trying to solve this dilema.

Questions:

1. You've named your machine ESP-RAID. Are you doing RAID somehow? (Revelation doesn't especially like RAID arrays.)

2. Win XP's native file format is NTFS, but you're using FAT32 for all of your partitions except J:. Why is that? (Mixing file formats can result in weird storage problems.)

3. Have you tried installing the entire game, including My Documents saved games, to your C: partition? If you did so as a re-install, did you completely uninstall Revelation before re-installing?

1. No I'm not using RAID arrays. The model name of computer case that I used for the system is Raidmaster. I shortened it to RAID for LAN purposes.

2. When I first built my system, I was using 98SE. I just didn't convert the files to NTFS when upgrading to XP. I use NTFS on partion J: because that is where I store the Automatic System Recovery file that is over 4 GB.

3. Although I haven't reloaded to the C: drive, I had a similar thought and yesterday moved the default My Documents folder to the E: drive where the game is loaded. I then proceeded to play, making many saves during the game play. Before writing this, I started the game and went to Load Game. All of the saves that I made the day before were listed. I opened the most recent one and everything was as it should be except that the earlier savegame files that were created during the problem time still aren't listed. At this point, I don't need them because I have "caught up" to the progress I had previously achieved. But the way they are registered and recognized within the game structure doesn't seem to automatically correct itself just because the file exists within the folder.

I'll let you know if I continue to have success with this. If I do, then this issue can be concluded.
