OS 10.4.8 has taken care of the problem of the game not starting. I just happen to try the game after the update.

I can play Myst IV on my Mac Mini, but I can't use the camera or the journal. Specifically, the space bar doesn't change the cursor mode, and control-clicking lets me move the cursor over the camera, but clicking on the camera puts me back in the normal state.
