ok, I have been through everything and still can only play the game for a short period of time. At some point, usually a different point each time, it either crashes to the desktop or reboots the whole system. I have updated my drivers and cleaned the dust off the fan. I have also followed the "how to prep" and the "clean boot install/re-install" suggestions. Suggestions, to do in the order shown. Play Revelation after completing each suggestion, to see if the problem has disappeared:

Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications when installing drivers or DirectX. "Download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading.

1. If you haven't done so very recently, carry out step 4 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

2. Reset your virtual memory paging file to 1024 MB, as detailed in step 3 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems.

3. Correctly install the proper video driver for your Radeon 9550 chipset and Revelation, following the procedure detailed under Installing ATI Radeon Drivers in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP.

The proper driver may NOT be Catalyst 6.6. If correctly installing Catalyst 6.6 doesn't help, try installing Catalyst 3.8 and then Catalyst 4.12, if 3.8 doesn't help

4. Revelation may be asking your video chipset to do something it's not happy with doing. Carry out the setting changes detailed in step 2 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems.

5. Processes and applications running in the background could be causing problems with Revelation. Carry out step 4 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems.

6. You may have a cooling problem.
-- a. Check the fans on your computer - case/CPU/video card/power supply/motherboard - to be certain that they're all turning at speed, the blades aren't dust-covered, and there aren't dust clogs in the fan housing ports and/or heat sinks. Completely remove any clogs you find. Also check the computer case vent holes to be certain they aren't clogged with dust or otherwise obscured (like by ribbon cables).
-- b. Check the GPU fan on your video card to make certain that the fan mounting base hasn't come loose at one of the corners. Some fans are held onto the card by only two attachments, and if one comes loose, you don't get good heat transfer. The GPU then overheats and causes crashes/reboots. Or, if there's no fan, make certain that the heat sink is firmly in place. Same comment about attachment points coming loose.
-- c. Try leaving the cover(s) off of your computer case. This can make a large difference in temperatures if you've got poor air circulation inside the case, but it's *not* a good way to operate long-term! If leaving the cover(s) off helps, try re-routing ribbon cables or whatever else may be obstructing air flow, or add an additional case cooling fan.
-- d. If you remove dust from fans by using 'canned air' to blow it off, carefully hold the fan blades stationary. If you don't, you can spin the fan fast enough to damage it.
-- e. Blowing dust off of circuit boards with 'canned air' can result in static electricity charge buildup. Before using 'canned air', shut off power with the PC's power supply switch (if it has one) or the power strip switch, but don't unplug the power cord. This allows maintaining case, motherboard and card grounding, and helps prevent static electricity from trashing the electronics.

ok, tried 1 and 2. Still having problems. As for 3, I can't find the link on the ATI site for catalyst 4.12 or 3.8. Don't know, but maybe the site has changed since this was originally posted?? Please let me know how to find these other drivers.

----- 1. Click on Drivers and Software in the left-hand pane, then on Windows XP > RADEON > Previous Drivers and Software.

----- 3. Click on RADEON Previous Windows XP Drivers and Software versions prior to CATALYST 5.1 / Multimedia Center 9.03. Catalyst 4.12 is at the top of the page; scroll down for Catalyst 3.8.

ok, installed 4.12, but now I am having a new problem. I made it though all of Haven, but when I try to link back to Tomahna, the game crashes back to the desktop. It crashes at the same point in the ride every time. I receive no error message. Suggestions???

I think I have fixed the major problems, but still can't get back to tomahna. Has anyone else had this problem? Tried to reinstall the game, but that didn't help either.

What did you do to fix the major problems?

loading the 4.12 driver seemed to make everything run better and I cleaned up the registery using one of the suggested sites on the clean install/reinstall. When I uninstalled the game last night and reinstalled, my system locked up and would not completely boot up- ie hourglass would never go away. So I restored the system to just prior to the latest uninstall and reinstall. Now everything seems to be working better, but the game will not progress past Haven back to Tomahna. Right after is circles around the kitchen and Yeesha's bedroom, the game shuts down and goes back to my desktop. I may attempt another uninstall and reinstall tonight to see if that will help.
