I'm almost at the end of the game. But today when I tried to start up it crashed as soon as I tried to move from one spot to the next. I restarted the game and received this error:

DirectX cannot create the device for Ares. Be sure your desktop is in 32 bits mode (the only depth supported by this version of Ares).

Filename:\Myst4\graphic\ares\private\directx\src\ares\apl_device.ccp.

Line No. 306

Press 'Retry' to debug.

I pressed 'Retry' and got:

The program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Thank you.

Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

1. Clear your Internet Explorer caches:
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

2. Use Windows Explorer to search your hard drive(s) for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use:
-- a. Close all programs, then open a single Windows Explorer session.
-- b. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
-- c. Type temp or tmp or temporary in the Named: box.
-- d. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
-- e. Click on Find Now to start the search.
-- f. Click on the temp (or tmp or temporary) folders found to open them.
-- g. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.
-- h. Close Windows Explorer.

3. Check your hard drive(s) for errors. Refer to How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP. Another option is Norton SystemWorks 2005's Disk Doctor.

4. Defragment your hard drive(s). Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP. Executive Software's Diskeeper 9.0 is another option.

5. Install or re-install DirectX 9.0c, available here, and reboot.

If none of the above help, post back and we'll talk about re-installing Revelation.

Why did you switch off graphic hardware acceleration? And have you done the above suggestions?

Well... actualy I try to start Myst4, and I have made some experiments. One of those was switching off hardware acceleration. In result I have got the same message as in initial post in this thread. Maybe problem is placed in the same area, maybe some options of graphic acceleration causes this message.

Not for me :-( But when I switch off hardware acceleration options, there was a message 'DirectX cannot create the device for Ares....'. I suppose that is randwill1 problem: hardware acceleration options.

BTW: I cannot start M4 (polish version) and I tried all methods discused on this forum (those not completly leagl too...). Now I try clean installation of OS.

Regards,

Hey I'm not very technical but I tried turning hardware accelaration on (didn't even know it existed or that it was turned off) and voila - the thing worked. So try it if you have the same problem.

Hey, I got the same exact error message, I tried everything that has been suggested, clearing caches, defragmenting the hard drive, reinstalling DirectX, and updating my video card drivers. The system is currently in 32 bit mode, and hardware acceleration is at the maximum, although adjusting these settings had no effect. Is there any other way to fix or circumvent this? Unlike the person who posted the error, this game has never worked for me so far.

You've probably got a hardware and/or driver problem.

If you'll post a DxDiag report in this thread, we'll take a look at your system and maybe make recommendations. See To post a DxDiag report (bottom of page) in [Posting Guidelines] Help! I'm Having Technical Problems and I Don't Know Why!?! for a how-to. Run all of the graphics and sound tests you can before saving the report to a file, and post *all* of the file! Also, include details of exactly how Revelation has never worked for you, the exact text of any error messages you've been getting, etc., etc.

The text of my error message was identical to that of randwill1. Basically, the game installed fine, and both discs bring up the autorun menu, but clicking "play" momentarily brings up an image similar to the autorun menu, which quickly dissappears, followed by the error message.
I rand the directx diagnostic with all the tests. It called the test "successful" even though during the music tests, the 3 deviced labeled with "[Emulated]" played silence rather than music. The diagnostic didn't seem to notice this and I was not prompted to indicate yes or no like with the other tests, so I don't know what that really means.
Here are the results:

Of the various Matrox video chipsets, Revelation supports only the Parhelia. (See the System Requirements on the Revelation slipcase and the Ubisoft Store's Revelation website.) You have a Millennium G550 chipset, which is NOT directly supported by Revelation. This is most likely the primary problem.

I'd recommend installing one of the video chipsets/boards (AGP versions) supported by Revelation, preferably one of the ATI Radeon series (stay away from the 9200) or the NVIDIA GeForce FX series.

Failing that, try:

1. Download and install the latest driver for your G550 chipset, available here from Matrox. You probably want version 5.93.009 (2kxp_593_009.exe, released 10/26/2004, 4.3 MB), but be certain to verify which G550 chipset you have before downloading.

Note that "download accelerator" or "download helper" utilities should NOT be used when downloading any driver, BIOS update, DirectX, etc.

Install as follows:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- b. Install or re-install DirectX 9.0c, available here, and reboot.
-- c. Uninstall the existing Matrox driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
----- 2. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the Matrox driver you want to remove.
----- 3. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
----- 5. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, reboot, and log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- d. If prompted, cancel the installation of the display adapter during bootup. If given a choice of default drivers to install, select 'Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)'. Reboot if prompted.
-- e. Close all unnecessary applications and processes running in the background, including anti-virus software. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
----- 1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once and then click on Task Manager.
----- 2. Select the Applications tab.
----- 3. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
----- 4. Click on the End Task button at the bottom of the tab.
----- 5. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary applications and processes are closed. If you aren't sure which background processes or applications can be closed using Task Manager, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.

Note: DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing step e., especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers, who are most assuredly not your friends!

-- f. Click on Start > Run.
-- g. Browse to the new Matrox driver installer file, and double-click on it to put it in the Open box.
-- h. Click on OK to start installation process.
-- i. Follow the extraction Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults.
-- j. Reboot when prompted.

2. Download and install the latest Matrox G550 BIOS update (setup_258.exe, released 6/31/05, 1.8 MB), available here.
-- a. Download setup_258.exe.
-- b. Double click on the file to extract it.
-- c. Extract the file to C:\Matrox\Util.
-- d. Go to that folder and carefully read the readme.txt file for installation details, especially under 'Updating your graphics card BIOS'.

3. Download and install the latest sound driver for your SoundMAX Digital Audio chipset. This driver is available from Intel for your D865GLC motherboard. The file you want is AUD_ALL32_5.12.1.5240_PV2.EXE, version 5.12.1.5240, released 4/13/2005, 24347 KB. See Release Notes for the driver installation procedure. In particular, be certain to remove the existing sound driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs and reboot, before installing the updated driver.

4. Access the setup menu for your G550 by clicking on the Matrox toolbar icon, if there is one, or by right-clicking on a blank area of the Desktop and then on Properties > Settings > Advanced. Before changing settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. As a first pass, set your menu choices as closely as possible to:
-- Anisotropic filtering (AF) and antialiasing (AA) 'off' or 'controlled by application'. If AF or AA optimization is a choice, set it to 'off' or 'none'.
-- Trilinear optimization to 'off', 'none', or 'controlled by application'.
-- Vertical sync to 'controlled by application'.
-- Image setting midway between 'performance' and 'quality'.

Also try various setting combinations, especially with AF and AA. Play Revelation after each set of changes. If nothing helps, change everything back to your initial menu settings.

5. Reset your virtual memory paging file. Before changing your paging file settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. Be certain that you're logged on as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group, then:
-- a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- c. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
-- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- e. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
-- f. Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
-- g. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size.
-- h. Change both Initial size and Maximum size to 2048 (the desired value in megabytes).
-- i. Click Set, and then click OK.
-- j. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Close everything back to the Desktop.
-- k. Reboot.

Maybe, but your chances aren't all that good. If you buy the game, work out a deal where you can return it if it doesn't work. And keep your sales receipt!

Whether or not you try Revelation, you should update your video driver to the latest available.

For Win 95/98/Me, S3 Savage 4 video drivers 8.20

For Win 2K/XP, Downloading the Savage4 video drivers 8.40 for Windows 2000/XP

Or go to S3 Graphics.
