Ta-DAH!
OK, all done. No problem. Now I have a further question: I'm still not supposed to just leave the Revelation disc in the drive when I turn the computer off and on, right? |

It's best practice not to leave any disc in a drive, but with the settings changes you've made, that's now at your discretion.

Oh, good. That's perfect. I will take it out, but if I forget I don't need to panic.
Thank you! |

So . . . instead of following best practices, the last couple days I have forgotten to remove the disc. However, I am reminded that it is still in the drive because when I start my computer, I can hear the drive start spinning. I had expected - from the wording on the radio button - to be prompted by a screen asking if I wanted to proceed, but that has *not* happened. Is this how it should be operating?
Last night, when I booted up, I came back to find only the laptop screen active (I use an outboard monitor) and all it was showing was crazy pixilated dancing colors. I had to power off and restart. When I rebooted, the black and white startup screen asked me what to do, but I didn't write down what it said. I took its advice, whatever it was. It seems to have recovered. However, I did receive one of those little windows asking me to report it to Microsoft. In return, it directed me to Windows updates, which told me to update my video drivers - but they're already the most recent update, so there was nothing I could do. Do you have any further instructions? |

Yes. |

<sigh of relief>
<still wondering what H_G will have to say about startup error> |

If the problem occurs again, be sure to write down what you see on the screen - especially any error messages. That sort of info really helps with problem diagnosis! Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

Arghhh!!!
It happened again. I tried, I really did. But I didn't realize it was going to proceed whether I gave a response or not, and it went straight to normal startup on its own while I was writing. Meanwhile, all I had written down was the basic intro: "We apologize for the inconvenience . . ." and something about choosing "Last known configuration." When I chose to "Report this error to Microsoft," after the report it took me straight to a page with information about how to update video drivers. |

Don't bother to "Report this error to Microsoft". That and about $2.50 will get you a cup of Starbuck's finest!
Re-download and re-install your video driver. As above, this is "nVidia Quadro NVS 120M" (also for 110M), R173741.exe, 54.6 MB, available starting here. Download and install as follows: -- a. On the Dell page, click on Download Now to download the file. -- b. When the File Download window appears, click on Save this program to disk, and click on OK. -- c. On the Save In: window, click on the down arrow, select Desktop, and click on Save. The file will download to your desktop. ----- 1. If Download Complete appears, click Close. ----- 2. There should now be an icon on your Desktop for R173741.exe. -- e. Download AMD/ATI's CATALYST Uninstaller (cat-uninstaller.exe) to your Desktop. -- f. Double-click on the cat-uninstaller.exe Desktop icon to start the program. ----- 1. Follow the Wizard's instructions to remove all AMD/ATI files. The program will take a minute or so to search your hard disk(s) - wait for it! ----- 2. Reboot/restart when prompted. ----- 3. If Windows wants to install a video driver during reboot, cancel it. Windows will then install its default video driver. -- g. When Windows startup is complete, double-click on the R173741.exe Desktop icon to run the program. ----- 1. Follow the Wizard's instructions, and reboot/restart when prompted. -- h. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and start Revelation. Awlllll-righty then . . . I've done it.
I gave H_G some wrong info about my computer. When I went back and looked it up - BEFORE I downloaded and installed anything - I found that I have a Latitude 830 not an 820, and I have nVidia 140M, which takes the R205373 driver. I did have a slight snag in the "double-click the desktop icon" to install the driver process. The first thing it wanted to do was find a place for itself and I said yes to the location it wanted, which then unzipped into a whole bunch of files. But I found the .exe and was able to proceed from there. It was scary when the computer was rebooted, because I forgot the program would restore the default monitor settings. I had to go back and muddle through all that again, but I *think* I have it all back to normal now. Whew! H_G, I thank you heartily once again. |

You're welcome, of course, but did installing the correct driver solve the video-related problems?

Well, since the problem was not occurring every time I booted up, I think I'll have to wait and see. I've only booted up again 3 times, although those 3 times have been without a hitch.
Also I haven't had a chance to play Revelation again, yet, and I haven't forgotten and left the disc in the drive again yet. I hope I'll have time to do some gameplay later this afternoon and evening. Certainly I'll be checking back in if the problem occurs again. |

And please check back in if the problem does NOT occur again. That's good information for other folks!

Day 1 - no problems with boot up
(or gameplay, although once you've saved several games in one time of play, that's when the pausing/freezing at the menu starts to happen. It doesn't seem to happen each time at the beginning, even with many, many saved games - I currently have a total of 60). This message has been edited. Last edited by: LynComeLately, |

Here we are at Day 5. Still no graphics problems.
Apparently it's time for some major (well, it seems major to me) cleanup again, though. The problem with freezes/pauses at the menu has returned. |

Questions:
1. Did you do a *full* (as opposed to minimum) Revelation install? 2. Have you posted a DxDiag report for your current PC anywhere in these Forums? Heimdall Semper ubi sub ubi |

1) Oh, yes! I had plenty of space on this new computer, so I did a *full* install!
(btw, I realized I never came back and completed information above: I currently have at least 60 saved games.) 2) No, I hadn't posted it for this computer. Your DxDiag report doesn't indicate any obvious problems that would account for the pausing/freezing, but there are some things to do.
Assuming that you reboot immediately before playing Revelation, close all open applications, and do NOT run any other applications before starting the game: 1. Check to see that your virtual memory settings are correct. -- a. Close all open applications, then click on Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Settings box under "Performance". -- b. Click on the Advanced tab and then click on Change box under "Virtual memory". -- c. For your C: drive, the System managed size radio button should be active. If it isn't, click on it to activate, and click on Set. -- d. Click on OK > OK > Apply > OK > OK. -- e. Click on Yes to restart your PC. 2. Set Windows to maximize program performance. -- a. Close all open applications, then click on Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Settings box under "Performance". -- b. On the "Visual Effects" tab, click on the Adjust for best performance radio button to activate it. -- c. Click on Apply > OK > OK. -- d. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop. 3. Check to see that your disc drive is using Direct Memory Access (DMA). -- a. Close all open applications, then click on Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager box. -- b. Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to expand the category. -- c. Right-click on the "Primary IDE Channel" entry, then click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu. -- d. Click on the Advanced Settings tab: ----- 1. Under "Device 0, Transfer Mode:" select DMA if available if that isn't already selected. ----- 2. Under "Device 0, Device Type:" select Auto Detection if it isn't grayed out. -- e. Click on OK > Device Manager box. -- f. Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to expand the category. -- g. Right-click on the "Secondary IDE Channel" entry, then click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu. -- h. Click on the Advanced Settings tab: ----- 1. Under "Device 0, Transfer Mode:" select DMA if available if that isn't already selected or grayed out. ----- 2. Under "Device 0, Device Type:" select Auto Detection if it isn't grayed out. -- c. Click on OK > OK, and close Control Panel back to the Desktop. -- d. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and play Revelation. There may be little or no change in the duration of the pausing/freezing, in which case you can either delete most of the Revelation saved games (you want about 20 maximum) to speed things up, or just live with the problem. I will try everything in your list. But also once again, the problem resolved - at least temporarily - after doing my computer housekeeping.
I didn't experiment to try one step at a time and check to see what - if any - one specific cleanup seemed to release it again, but by the time I finish the game (in 2 to 3 months?), I imagine I might be able to pin it down. |

H_G,
Well, here we are exactly two months later. Just this morning, the same startup problem I mentioned in this thread on January 29 just happened again. Meanwhile, I have been mostly forgetting to remove the Revelation disc when I shut down. In fact, probably it has been removed only about once a week during the intervening time. Last night I remembered to take it out, and this morning when I powered up, the screen (the computer screen; it never had a chance to transfer to the outboard monitor) became a scramble of pixels. I powered off and restarted, and this time when the startup screen told me there had been a problem, I had time to read and choose "Last known configuration" (or whatever the exact words are). I went ahead and did the report to Microsoft, on the off chance that somebody actually tallies these and pays attention. Of course, the next step offered at their site (after confirming that I have the latest MS updates) was that I need to do a video driver update, but I doubt there's been any updates for my computer since we just updated in February. The Device Manager says this is my current nVidia version: 6.14.11.7924. Do I need to go through another reinstall? Or just continue as if nothing happened - since I assume that a restore point was used for the "last known configuration"? Help, Heimdall! |
