Hey all,

It's really cool to have forums like these to help dealing with these tech problems. Thanks to the volunteers! I'm quickly pulling out my hair on this one, and I notice I'm hardly the only one.

Everything checks out in the DirectX tests; dxdiag report is below. I'm starting to get worried that it won't play at all on my laptop (an HP Compaq nc6400, with ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 video card).

My kids were really looking forward to this. Help!!

Welcome to the Forums!

Suggestions:

1. Before starting Revelation, always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications. Also:
-- a. Do NOT boot up with the Revelation DVD (or any other disc) in the drive.
-- b. Place Revelation Disc 2 in the drive only after bootup is complete.
-- c. If the disc autostarts, close back to the Desktop and use the icon to start Revelation.

2. If you have McAfee's Nuts & Bolts installed, uninstall it, reboot, and start Revelation.

3. Run the Revelation configuration utility.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Run.
-- c. Browse... to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin\configurator and double-click on myst_detection.exe to put it in the Open: box.
-- d. Click on OK to run the configuration utility.

If there are nothing but green checkmarks under Minimum Specifications:
-- a. Under Troubleshooting, click on the no after "Use minimal (safe) game configuration".
-- b. Click on the yes option to select it. Do NOT close the configuration utility.
-- c. Place Revelation Disc 2 in the drive and allow it to spin up to speed. If it autostarts, cancel out of the autostart menu.
-- d. On the configuration utility pane, click on Launch Game!.

4. Carry out steps 1 through 5 and step 7 under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. Then reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, close all open applications, and start Revelation.

5. Install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c, available here. When installation is complete, reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications. Then start Revelation.

6. Revelation wants your \Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames folder to be on your C: drive. If that's not the case, the game tends to crash immediately after starting. To restore your \My Documents folder to its default location on the C: drive:
-- a. Click on Start, then right-click on My Documents.
-- b. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Properties.
-- c. On the My Documents Properties sheet, click on the Target tab.
-- d. Under Target folder location, click on Restore Default.
-- e. Click on Apply > OK.
-- f. If it doesn't exist, create the subfolder \myst4-revelation savegames in your \My Documents folder.
----- 1. Open a Windows Explorer session and browse to C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents.
----- 2. Click on \My Documents to highlight the folder.
----- 3. Click on File on the top taskbar, then click on New > Folder.
----- 4. Type myst4-revelation savegames in the New Folder box, then press Enter.
-- g. If it doesn't exist under \My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames, create the sub-subfolder \journal. You should end up with C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames\journal.
-- h. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- i. Start Revelation.

7. Carry out the general video setting changes detailed in the first part of step 2 in Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP.

8. You may have something running in the background that's interfering with Revelation. Close all unnecessary processes and applications running in the background as detailed in step 4 of Myst IV: Miscellaneous Fixes for Video Problems With Win XP. Then, WITHOUT rebooting, start Revelation.

9. Run Revelation using Windows Compatibility Mode. See How to use the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows XP or HOW TO: Use Windows Program Compatibility Mode in Windows XP. Try the "Windows 98 / Windows Me" option first, then the other options if that doesn't help.

10. Download and install the SafeDisc Driver Fix from Macrovision. If that doesn't help, download and install the SafeDisc Windows XP Fix for Microsoft Games.

Wow, this is intense...and extremely helpful; thanks! I'll plug ahead with all these suggestions, and will report back with my results. Might take a day or two.

Cheers, Glen

OK...I've tried the first eight of the ten suggestions above. None of them made any difference. However, in Suggestion 6, I was not permitted to change the "Target folder location" away from what seems to be some sort of site on my company's network. I never use that network in any case, but it won't let me change the setting. Might this be the problem? Any workaround?

It sounds like you've installed Revelation on a network drive, instead of on your local PC's hard drive. If you installed Revelation on a network drive, that's most likely the problem, since the game definitely doesn't like networks!

If you're certain that you installed Revelation on your local PC's hard drive, try physically disconnecting your local PC from your company's network before playing the game. (That's probably a really good idea anyway, since most companies have hidden "find ˜em and fire ˜em" network software running in the background that identifies non-work-related computer activities. Like playing games on company time, browsing porn or shopping sites, etc.).

If you installed Revelation on a network drive, uninstall the game and re-install it on your local PC. Same comment about physically disconnecting your local PC from the network.

I wish it were that simple. I actually installed and did all troubleshooting at home, several miles away from the network.

Oh, and BTW, my company doesn't mind me playing Myst at home...as long as it's on my own time Smile

From your comments, you have \Documents and Settings\<your user name>\My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames folder on the E: drive. That's most likely the cause of the crashing.

Try the following:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start, then right-click on My Documents.
-- c. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Properties.
-- d. On the My Documents Properties sheet, click on the Target tab.
-- e. Click on Find Target... and verify that \My Documents is where you expect it to be, then close the resulting pane back to My Documents Properties.
-- f. Click on the General tab
-- g. In the Attributes: section, clear the Read-only checkbox and click on Apply.
-- h. On the Confirm Attribute Changes pane, click on the Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files radio button to activate it, then click on OK.
-- i. Click on the Target tab.
-- j. Under Target folder location, click on Restore Default.
-- k. Click on Apply > OK.
-- l. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- m. Start Revelation.

If that doesn't work:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard.
-- c. Click on Next > Next and select how your PC connects to the Internet.
-- d. Click on Next and change/add anything appropriate.
-- e. Click on Next and change/add anything appropriate.
-- f. Click on Next and activate the Turn off file and printer sharing radio button.
-- g. Click on Next and check the settings for accuracy.
-- h. Click on Next and activate the Just finish the wizard; I don't need to run the wizard on other computers radio button.
-- i. Click on Next > Finish and reboot.
-- j. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications.
-- k. Click on Start, then right-click on My Documents.
-- l. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Properties.
-- m. On the My Documents Properties sheet, click on the Target tab.
-- n. Under Target folder location, click on Restore Default.
-- o. Click on Apply > OK.
-- p. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- q. Start Revelation.

If steps j. through q. don't work either, instead do steps a. through m. under "Try the following:".

OK, I've tried both possible courses of action above.

I unchecked the "Read-only" attribute for all files and folders in the My Documents folder. When I went back to the "Target" tab, it still only showed me the original target location and gave me no way to change it (no Restore Default button, and I couldn't edit the text in the Target window). Then, when I returned to the "General" tab, the "read-only" button was magically restored to the checked-on position!

On the Network Setup Wizard, the computer refused to let me run it, saying that it has detected that this computer is part of a domain.

Hopefully this brings us a little closer. Again, Heimdall, thanks so much for your help.

Also try suggestions 9 and 10, above.

If those suggestions don't help:

1. Uninstall Revelation and re-install from a clean boot, as detailed under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, "8. Clean-boot Revelation Re-install, Previous Installation", in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. All install paths should point to your C: drive. Also pay attention to the items under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up and under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, "1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments".

2. Since you "never use that network in any case", make all changes necessary to remove the company network from your laptop, then try changing your \My Documents location to your C: drive. Every system is different and it's dangerous to suggest specific networking changes if not sitting in front of the PC, so I can only offer the following generalities:
-- a. Using Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, remove any company-network-related software from your laptop, and reboot.
-- b. Using Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Network adapters, make any necessary changes on your adapter's Advanced tab. For example, click on the Not Present radio button for the Network Address property.
-- c. Using Start > Control Panel > Network Connections, make any necessary changes to the company-network listing.
-- d. Unless you also use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)) for other purposes, remove any references to a VPN on Control Panel and anywhere else on your PC.
-- e. Reboot, and again try changing your \My Documents location to your C: drive.

Thanks, Heimdall. I'm going on a week-long business trip, but I'll try this as soon as I get back.

Just a quick update...my problem was indeed the location of the "My Documents" folder. Our sysadmin had to put a new "profile" on my PC, whatever that is, to relocate it. Now everything works like a charm!

Thanks, Heimdall, for diagnosing the problem for me. Thumbs Up

Heimdall,

Myst IV does indeed seem to crash if your My Documents folder isn't on drive C. It is possible to work around this problem without forcing people to change their PC configuration though. My documents folder is on a network... because that's where it is supposed to be Smile I don't want to change that just to make a game work.

So here's what I did:

1) Run the game, watch it crash.
2) Look in your My Documents folder. You should see a Myst 4 revelation savegames folder.
3) Go into that folder and create a folder called "journal".

That's it! The reason for the crash appears to be that Myst is assuming that folder is already created. Hope this helps someone.

Cheers,

Welcome to the Forums, and thanks for the input!

Actually, you're lucky to be able to play Revelation with your \Documents and Settings folder on a network drive. Revelation usually doesn't get along at all well with networks.

Be that as it may, I'll add your experience to Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.
