I am trying to install Myst IV on my Windows 2000 machine. I recently installed a new video card in order for me to play (Video-228PCI Series, NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200). I installed DirecTX at the same time.
When I try to start the game, I get this message:
"DirectX cannot create the device for Ares. Get sure your desktop is in 32 bits mode (the only bit depth supported by this version of Ares).
Try setting your desktop in 32 bits now.

So... how do I set my desktop to 32 bits? Any suggestions please?

Well, if you do a search (click on Find tab at top of this page) for ares, you'll discover that this may not be a simple problem to solve!

NOTE: this computer was 'somewhat' built. The only things added to this machine when I got it was a new DVD/CDROM drive and an additional hard drive. I just installed the new video card today. I have not replaced the motherboard. Also, I removed my computer's name from this report for personal security.

To set your Desktop to 32-bit color:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > Properties.
-- c. Click on the Settings tab, then click on the arrow by the Color quality box.
-- d. Click on Highest (32-bit) to select that mode and put it in the box.
-- e. Check to be certain that Highest (32-bit) is still showing in the box, then click on Apply > OK to exit to the Desktop. (If you’re asked to reboot when you click on Apply, do so.)

1. From the DxDiag report, your on-board Intel 82810 Graphics Controller is your primary video chipset, which is not an especially good thing! Is there an entry in your system BIOS that disables this chipset, or at least makes your AGP video chipset the first to be initialized on bootup?

2. You have NVIDIA's ForceWare version 61.76 video driver installed.
-- a. Have you tried ForceWare 162.18 or 93.71?
-- b. If you replaced another NVIDIA driver, did you install ForceWare 61.76 as per the instructions (modified as necessary for Win 2K) under Installing NVIDIA Drivers in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP?
-- c. The latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c is available here. Is that what you installed?

What does BIOS stand for?
I can access the Intel Graphics through it's own icon in my control panel, but I don't see anything that explicitly states to disable anything. I can change settings (the tabs read 'devices', 'color', 'schemes', 'hot keys', and 'information')
However, it looks like I can change those settings through the Display Properties via Control Panel (I see both the Intel and the FX). Do I change it there? Or should it be done elsewhere?

a. I installed the one that came with the CD with the actual hardware. So, no I haven't tried them... should I? Are those prefered?
b. I had no existing graphics card, so I did not replace anything. I only added a new graphics card and the necessary drivers from the software CD that came with it.
c. According to the DirectX.log that was produced when I installed it from the software CD, this is the version I have (with the date next to it being from last Friday when I installed the program):
DirectX Version: 4.09.00.0904.0
So I am assuming this is Version 4.09? Can I still install this Version 9 even though I have Windows 2000 Professional, and NOT Windows XP?

Ok, I managed to switch the display settings so that the NVIDIA one is the dominant one of the two; I downloaded the latest DirectX driver; and I managed to play the game without any hitches (so far). Yay!
