Greetings Seekers, Truce

I initially had problems running disk 2 but after updating my firmware and making several other adjustments from the forums I was eventually able to get into the the game.
I haven't had any problems with the game aside from getting the DVD drive to read disk 2.
I found that I needed to insert disk 2 several times before it would be read and from time to time the DVD drive would crash requiring a reboot to reacquire the drive.
The disk is clean and I have cleaned the lens but for whatever reason now the DVD drive crashes every time I insert disk 2.
The DVD drive works for other applications without any problems. bow
I have posted a DxDiag below just incase it might help.

You have a DVD drive? Both of your drives show up in the DxDiag report as CD only (SONY CD-ROM CDU5221 and CREATIVE CD-RW RW8439E). Revelation is on DVD's, which can NOT be read in a CD drive!

Greetings Heimdall G,

Did I mention that the DVD drive keeps crashing? Veryhappy
Silly me, I forgot that the DVD drive had already crashed before I ran the DxDiag.
Oops
I have re-ran the DxDiag and listed my D: Drive below.
Any additional information can be found in the original post. Wink2

Questions:

1. You say that your Sony DDU1621 keeps crashing.
-- a. What do you mean by crashing?
-- b. How does the drive crash?
-- c. What are the symptoms of the crashing? Does the drive make strange noises? Any smoke or strange smells? Does it stop spinning? Do you get any on-screen messages?
-- d. When the drive crashes, does any other part of your system or of Windows stop functioning?
-- e. What does Windows have to say in terms of working messages when you "reboot to reacquire the drive"?

Please post *much* more detail!

2. This looks like the same drive with which you installed Revelation back in early May '07, as per your posts in Installation Issues: Disc #2: Can't read? Install fails part way? In here! starting with Sun May 06 2007 06:13.
-- a. Have you been playing Revelation since then with no problems? If you've had Revelation problems, what have they been?
-- b. Has the drive crashing started very recently? If not, when did it start?
-- c. If the crashing is very recent, what has changed in your system between early May and now?
-- d. Are you having other problems with your PC or with Windows?
-- e. Have you done any hardware upgrading, adding, or changing since early May?
-- f. Have you done anything significant to Windows?
-- g. Have you done anything significant to the DDU1621, like moving it to a new location in your PC's case, or changing the cable connections to it, or whatever?
-- f. Have you installed any new programs or made any other significant software changes?
-- g. Are you having other problems of any sort whatsoever with the DDU1621?
-- h. How many times have you used the laser lens cleaning disc since early May? And is it a name-brand disc?
-- i. Are you running a RAID setup?

BTW, please don't use anything but the standard color (black) for your posts. Light blue letters on a blue background are difficult to read!

bow Greetings Heimdall G, bow
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I will try to take your questions one at a time.
quote:
1. You say that your Sony DDU1621 keeps crashing.
-- a. What do you mean by crashing?

Answer: The D: Drive is no longer listed under Devices and Removable Storage and as observed in the DxDiag is no longer registered on my puter.
quote:
-- b. How does the drive crash?

Answer: The registry just blinks out.
quote:
-- c. What are the symptoms of the crashing? Does the drive make strange noises? Any smoke or strange smells? Does it stop spinning? Do you get any on-screen messages?

Answer: No noises, smells, smoke or on screen messages. I can't tell if it stops spinning but if the external indicator light fails to fluter and go out after about 30 seconds then the disk is either not being read or the Drive has crashed.
quote:
-- d. When the drive crashes, does any other part of your system or of Windows stop functioning?

Answer: NO!
quote:
-- e. What does Windows have to say in terms of working messages when you "reboot to reacquire the drive"?

Answer: Windows has nothing to say. The reboot restores the D: Drive to the Devices and Removable Storage Registry.

quote:

Answer: Yes I have been playing Revelation without problem except for the difficulty of getting the D: Drive to read the disk.
I insert the disk and watch the external light on the Drive.
If the external light flutters and goes out then I will be able to load and play the game.
I may have to re-insert the disk several times before the Drive will read the disk.
If the external light fails to flutter and go out then the disk doesn't register on the Drive or the Drive crashes and is no longer listed in the Device and Removable Storage registry.
quote:
-- b. Has the drive crashing started very recently? If not, when did it start?

Answer: I wasn't playing the game for several weeks but I came back to it this week and now I can't seem to get it to play.
What was only a minor nuisance before is now incapacitating because it crashes the Drive every time I try to load the game.
quote:
-- c. If the crashing is very recent, what has changed in your system between early May and now?

Answer: As far as I know nothing has changed on my system except the addition of SpywareBlaster.
quote:
-- d. Are you having other problems with your PC or with Windows?

Answer: No!
quote:
-- e. Have you done any hardware upgrading, adding, or changing since early May?

Answer: No!
quote:
-- f. Have you done anything significant to Windows?

Answer: No!
quote:
-- g. Have you done anything significant to the DDU1621, like moving it to a new location in your PC's case, or changing the cable connections to it, or whatever?

Answer: No!
quote:
-- h. Have you installed any new programs or made any other significant software changes?

Answer: Only SpywareBlaster.
quote:
-- i. Are you having other problems of any sort whatsoever with the DDU1621?

Answer: No and I'm currently playing Resident Evil 4 without any problems.
quote:
-- j. How many times have you used the laser lens cleaning disc since early May? And is it a name-brand disc?

Answer: I have used a Maxell CD340 Lens Cleaner maybe 6 times since then and once yesterday.
quote:
-- k. Are you running a RAID setup?

Answer: Yes, Yes I am!

Point taken on using the standard color (black) for my posts.

My DDU1621 has had difficulty reading disk 2 from the beginning because of the layering on that disk.
I can't think of any reason why it should suddenly stop reading the disk totally.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this issue.

You Rock, Melas.

P.S. I tried disabling SpywareBlaster but it didn't help.

The problem may be due to running a RAID setup with a VIA chipset (which can be flaky critters), or to the DDU1621's lasers getting progressively weaker with age.

Since you've updated your DDU1621's firmware, tried disabling SpywareBlaster, etc., I've got only three suggestions:

1. Check to be certain that you still have Fast User Switching turned off.

2. Update your chipset drivers and system BIOS firmware. If you'll post your exact motherboard model number, I can give you the update URL's. Apparently, your MS-7021 can have 3 motherboards (KT4A-V, KT6-V, or KT6V-SR/LSR).

3. Install a double-layer DVD burner released very recently. Examples are the Plextor PX-800A, Sony DRU-830A, and Pioneer DVR-1810/DVR-112D (scroll down the page). These burners will also read and write CD's, so you can replace both your CDU5221 and RW8439E with a single drive.

bow Greetings Heimdall G, bow

It looks like you've really put some time into resolving this issue and I want you to know that I really appreciate the effort.
quote:

Check: The Fast User Switching is still disabled.

2. Update your chipset drivers and system BIOS firmware. If you'll post your exact motherboard model number, I can give you the update URL's. Apparently, your MS-7021 can have 3 motherboards (KT4A-V, KT6-V, or KT6V-SR/LSR).

According to the web I should be able to ID my Motherboard with the BIOS but nothing I found matched what you indicated so I'm probably not using the information correctly.

The BIOS are VIA VT8237 utility V2.10 if that's of any help.

You're probably right about the laser and the upgrade links were very useful. Wink2

Thanks again, Melas.

Some BIOS's will give you the motherboard model number, some won't. The model number may also show up on the very first page you see on bootup, either at the top or at the bottom of the page. Press the Pause key to stop the action and read what's on the page, then press Enter to continue with the bootup.

There's a label on the motherboard somewhere with the model number on it, but it may be on the bottom of the board. Short of dismantling your PC, try downloading and running CPUID's CPU-Z. This is a freeware utility that gathers information on your system, including on your motherboard.

To download, click on CPU-Z 1.40 under Download Latest version on the upper left side of the CPUID page. Unzip cpu-z-140.zip to a folder, then double-click on the unzipped cpuz.exe to run it, or do Start > Run. (It'll take up to 15 seconds to complete its gathering and display the summary page.) Click on the Mainboard tab, and look in the Model box. Hopefully, that'll be the exact model number of your motherboard.

There's all sorts of other interesting info on the various tabs, so you might want to mouse around a bit.

I'm in Houston, so my 4th was a bit wet! Hope it was better where you are.

Unfortunately, CPU-Z didn't turf up the information I need.

Download and install EVEREST Free Edition 2.20. What does Everest say about your motherboard?

Thanks for the information but I wonder if you would be willing to give me your opinion on this site. MSI -- Live Update Online.
The EVEREST information is listed below, Melas.

Regarding MSI's Live Update Online and on-line updating services in general, I recommend downloading and manually installing updates. I've seen too many disasters when these services were used, particularly for BIOS updates. MSI also recognizes the possibility of problems - note their weasel words and disclaimers. IMHO, use Live Update Online at your own risk....

Ah, yes, KT6V-LSR, that's the ticket! MSI's home page for your motherboard is here. Click on the tabs to go to the various download pages.
-- a. Drivers for your motherboard chipset are available here. The latest chipset driver update is VIA4in1_MB.zip, released 4/20/07.
----- 1. Download VIA4in1_MB.zip to a folder, and unzip it.
----- 3. Follow the instructions under Installation and Remove, Windows UI mode, Maintenance in Readme.htm.
-- b. If the chipset drivers don't help, update your BIOS. You appear to currently have the initial-release BIOS version. The latest update is to version 2.0, available here. This is 7021v20.zip, released 10/21/04.
----- 1. Download 7021v20.zip to a folder, and unzip it.
----- 2. Use Everest to make certain that you have an AMI BIOS.
----- 3. Follow the appropriate instructions in How to flash the BIOS.doc.
----- 4. While the update code is being written to the BIOS chip, do NOT do anything with your PC. Don't even touch the mouse!

While you're at it, you should also update at least your:
-- a. Sound driver. The latest version is 5.10.00.6230, released 5/8/07, while you have (ancient) version 5.10.00.5420 currently installed. Look under Realtek ALC Series AC97 Audio Driver.
-- b. IDE/SATA RAID drivers. The latest version is 5.1.2600.540, released 5/4/06, while you have (also ancient) version 5.1.2600.0220 currently installed. Look under VIA PIDE/SATA RAID Drivers & Utility.

bowGreetings Heimdall G,bow

Wow!
I can't believe how much trouble you went to over this.
I found all of the drivers and with the exception of the BIOS they all had two versions.
They had the Windows 2000/XP and the Windows XP 64bit.
Based upon your recommendation of the VIA4in1_MB.zip, it would seem that I need the Windows 2000/XP version but I wouldn't want to assume that & make an ASS out of U & ME. Veryhappy
How can I tell if my OS is XP or XP 64bit? Confused

Thanks again for all of the assistance, Melas.

Q. How can I tell if my OS is XP or XP 64bit?
A. The DxDiag report for a 64-bit version of Win XP would mention "x64" in various places. That aside, however, you're running Win XP Home Edition - which doesn't have a 64-bit version, only 32-bit. So, what you need is, for example, VIA4in1_MB.zip, Windows 9X/Me/2000/XP (11754KB).

BTW, a caveat on updating the system BIOS. Be aware that there's always a (relatively small) risk that the updating process will crater the BIOS chip, or that the code-writing process will fail to complete properly. If the chip dies, the PC is dead until a new motherboard is installed. If the writing process goes awry, there may be a way to recover depending on the BIOS chip and how the motherboard is set up, but that's not a given. I've never had either unhappy experience myself, but have seen reports of that sort of thing. Also, remember MSI's Live Update Online weasel words and disclaimers?

BIOS updating is another "proceed at your own risk" situation!

bowGreetings Seekers, bow

There is an old adage. "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"
That is excellent advice especially when it comes to Raid Motherboard drivers and BIOS. LoL

I now have my system reconfigured and a New WriteMaster (CD/DVDW SH-S182D) DVD Drive.
All of the issues are resolved and I am free to continue my exploration of the Myst Universe.

Thanks again for all the help & may all of your advice be sound.
