wiZaK, because you're a foreigner, I'll explain this. I can't speak directly for our SOF units, but generally speaking, those who qualify to tryout for Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Marine Force Recon etc, are few and far between. Of these who qualify, no more than 20% will actually graduate their respective course and make it onto a unit. Thus, actually making it can give major points in impressing people. And, because of the secretive nature of the groups, identifying operatives is difficult, if not impossible. Because of this, it is easy to lie to get jobs, pick up women, or even get unauthorized security clearance.
First off: Posers can be dangerous.
Second: To lie and say that you are one of these men when you are not is insulting to the real men who put themselves in harms way.
Third: Because of an uneducated public, a lot of people believe the usually loud, obnoxious, self-centered posers in their claims and project these negative images on the real SOF units who, in reality, are quiet professionals who rarely even admit that they were with an elite unit.
So, the reason people who say things like "I am a Green Beret..." is that posers are everywhere, and basically, we can't stand them any more than a BTDT soldier!
