Ok so lets take a look at this for a moment...
Lets say your Sam Fisher... You 51 and many tragedies have happened in your life...

Tragedy 1 - Divorced Regan Burns
Tragedy 2 - Regan dies from ovarian cancer in 1989 - Sarah was 4
Tragedy 3 - Sarah is killed by a drunk driver in september of 2008
Tragedy 4 - Enrica Villablanca (a terrorist Sam grows feelings for) Is killed by a splinter cell sent by Williams.

So after all that! What would you do?

Drink alcohol.

I'm pretty sure old-gen isn't going to be the canonical choice, so tragedy four probably never happened in the first place. And tragedy two kinda didn't really matter to Sam. I mean, she divorced him...

Basically, tragedy three was the only one that really mattered and broke Sam down.
