I was priviledged enough to attend an Xbox 360 event last night where I was able to check out AC2 a bit.

One thing that totally stood out and made the game looked silly was how the character swims using the front crawl style (sometimes called freestyle in different parts of the world).

Front crawl wasn't introduced to the West (where the game is set) until about the 1800s. Breast stroke was the main style in the West up until then.

I would like to know why the developers chose front crawl for the game? Was this a deliverate choice to be historically inaccurate? For an assassin to be swimming in the open using a 'radical' style would surely bring attention to himself/herself?

It just looks totally out of context when I saw it last night.

I think it's just a mistake or maybe your history is wrong.

They probably didn't give it that much thought and went with the crawl because it looks cooler.

also just because something is first wrote in a book at a set date doesn't mean that is when it was first used. (if you believe the history the bloke got it from the native Americans) now you cant tell me no other person in the world ever thought to swim that way.

Wow. Interesting, but I doubt the majority of players will notice or care.

The crawl was most likely chosen because the breast stroke is kind of a sissy stroke. It's not very efficient and it looks funky, especially for an Assassin.

If i remember correct i think that Leonardo also was thought weird because of his swimming (not used that much) and how he swam.

Not everything is going to be historically accurate and they have already stated that.

Besides if you are going to critique something like the swimming, how about the fact that most of the assassins were almost always caught and made no attempt to escape. It is suggested that it was even shameful for them to survive.

Now that just wouldnt make the game as much fun now would it?

hmmm.... so you think that NO ONE swam similarly styled to the front crawl? I think that some people swam with a front crawl, but it was unusual. I think it would be pretty stupid if no one thought of a style of swimming that was more efficient than the breaststroke. the reason the breast stroke was popular because it looked good for rich people, and when they first saw the front crawl they thought it looked "barbaric" and uncivilized. That doesn't mean no one in Europe had ever swam in a similar style. All the people weren't idiots btw.

Plus, the breast stroke can be very harmful to your shoulders. I had a friend who threw out both of them when she swam competitively. The crawl is much safer and less strenuous. Also, it's quieter. ;P

The Parkour that he's performing and the hidden blade and gun he uses is also historically inaccurate. Wink

Perhaps the assassins of Masyaf learned how to do crawl, and it was passed down from generation to generation? Or not..

They would have had dogs back then, right(obviously)? so they could have easily adopted a "doggy paddle" style swimming, then evolved it. And they would have had dogss ages ago, even before that, so they would have learnt then.
