Firing solutions for the RS-82

Having not played IL-2 for about a year I have just gotten the 1946 update and like it very much. That being said, I resurrected an old 45-mission campaign that I had made for the I-16 and started to update that with new ground features.

While doing this I started to play around with the RS-82 rockets and trying to figure out how best to use them. Using the C-47 as drones, I have come up with firing solutions that make the rockets explode right behind or next to the bombers, sometimes they explode right on the target.

The set parameters are target distance = 500 meters, the times are as follows:

Set time delay target distance
1.5 secs ~.51
1.75 secs ~.61
2.00 secs ~.75
2.25 secs ~.93-.94
2.50 secs ~1.09-1.10
2.75 secs ~1.18

The power settings are 75-80% power and closing speed about 190 mph.

I find the 2.25 sec solution the best even though that just puts me into the range of the guns on the HE-111. There is less rocket drop at this range and being closer increases your chance of a hit.

Salute

The rockets mounted on the IL-2 were intended to be used against ground targets, not aircraft.

However, most people do use them against bombers when given the chance. That said, I find the IL-2 a little too slow for intercepting bombers.

I find the P-47 and its 6 rockets to be a wicked bomber killer. I close to a range where it is nearly impossible to miss and let a pair fly. I don't use the timer; I go for a hit to kill the bomber. The large warheads on the 2.75 inch rockets rip a bomber apart when they hit.

However you do it, it is a lot of fun.

These firing solutions are for the I-16 and other bomber interceptors not the IL-2 or other ground attack aircraft.

RS-82 rockets were not just for the IL-2 in the ground attack role. These rockets were also intended to be used in air-to-air combat. I have read several accounts where I-16 or MiG pilots used rockets to bring down enemy bombers. For the MiG-3, rocket rails were not added until Fall 1941 in the defense of Moscow vs. German bombers. However, the use of rockets vs. bombers was eventually discontinued due to their inaccuracy.

Good info Uppiski. I've always had trouble using the rockets and this will help me do better.

I made a coop with Series 1 IL-2's (they carry 16 rockets) attacking a large formation of He-111 bombers. From what I gather, this was not an unusual occurance. After all, that's what the time-delay rockets were created for..bomber attack.

It does take some practice, but that makes it even more satisfying.

There's nothing like taking down a bomber with a time-delay...incredibly fun. Also, when I host this mission on HL, most people really enjoy it. It's pretty unique and players seem to appreciate that.

That's prety much exactly what I found a few years ago: a 2.2 sec delay and launch when the He-111 gunners open fire. I think I still have the training track somewhere, but not on this laptop. That was in an I-16.

Rockets were also used air-to-air during the short war against the Japanese in '39.

You can't use the delay function with any of the Western Allied rockets, so you have to go for a hit if you use them, although they weren't used air-to-air.

i suppose that you could give a happy FW190 coming head on a nasty surprise just as he was thinking that he had the advantage with his many guns.

Hi Uppiski- not sure what my delay was- think it was 3 secs. But check out this vid: pretty much dead reckoning, luck, but fun for a few mins.

Good luck
