This thread needs some screenshots! I shall oblige.

Here I sweep over the labouring sweating comrades on our proud collectives. I shall defend you, brothers and sisters! After I have flown between the glorious factory smokestacks and under a few bridges. But the SECOND I'm done with that, I shall be protecting you.

The treacherous fascists have broken the Pact of Steel and are intent on raping the Motherland. Here I can be seen climbing, rather artistically it must be said, into the skies over Tallin or Tallinnen or something, to deal death to the Invaders!

See?

Unfortunately this fascist instrument of murder made it home, but at least one Nazi won't be harming the Rodina again.

Thanks FSM,

Screenies were needed. Much appreciated.

My system needs improvement. It is only good enough to rum FMB, and play missions in good weather, so I'm going to be shopping this weekend for a new box.

My pleasure, man. I had a good time flying the first two missions. Will try and fit more in soon. This map is a monster though - that shot of the Stuka going down really was like a slideshow .The Finland map always was big but since it has been modded the new textures and trees seem to be even heavier. Looks glorious though.

I just read through AAA for the first time today. I saw the retextured Gulf of Finland map thread. I gather that's the one you're using?

I should have my new machine after Thanksgiving. I'm really impressed with some of the products coming out lately, I'm just also a little turned off at the prospect of messing with reinstallation, and all of the file manipulation I'm looking at to upgrade to 4.09mb+MOD.

I don't know if you remember helping me with my MAT Manager. That drove me bonkers for a week! This sim has always been a can of worms Crack Whip and I almost kind of like it that way...

In some sick sense. Angry Blue Guy

Well done B50! You got there in the end. Thumbs Up

With regard to mods, I think AAA have a "Unified Installer" which installs the basic mods + 4.09. The mods are really a lot less hassle to install than I was expecting.

As Phil said, the mods thing is by and large pretty easy now. Just download the UI, have a look at how the MODS folder it sets up is structured and then most things can be done simply.

About the map, there is a stunning retextured map of Finland with interesting seasonal effects however the one I'm playing on is the 'default' one. vpmedia has done some great work applying new textures to most of the existing maps just to raise their overall quality. In most cases they look great. I had problems with one map though, Berlin. It wouldn't run smoothly on my PC with the modded version.

Anyway, more picture, this time from mission three. I find I'm really enjoying the change of setting as I hardly ever play anything Ostfront.
The map really is gorgeous, amazing considering it's age.

Had fun in the last mission with the rockets. Forgot to set the convergence and timing so I was absolutely hopeless. Those cannons sure make an impact though. Actually, even those green jellybeans work pretty well. I got in a couple of viciously good shots where I raked the cockpit -just walked the rounds in from the port engine and into the greenhouse. I like how the modded game shows the slumping pilots and gunners. Makes you feel vindicated, even if the plane stays aloft.

By the way, B5o if you want to upload some screenshots to M4T to help sell you campaign feel free to use these or I can take some specifically if you want. It makes a difference I think.
I thought the installation method could also be simpler though by now most people probably know how it goes. I still think the unzip to directory method works well though.

Played another mission. Got POk'ed the first time so had to redo it. That was good though because the second I was *ready* Twisted
Gorgeous looking mission -nice lighting and clouds. Hard to fly and fight in but that's part of the fun I think. Anyway, lots of action in this mission. Once again I failed utterly to hit anything with the rockets. Think I'll try and set them to about 150 metres next time as I constantly overshoot with them.

I managed to bag a few in this mission - two fell to my guns - I'm liking the jellybeans

- and the other met it's demise due to my perfectly executed Taran attack - yes, I flew into him on purpose this time (honestly). I was out of ammo but my blood was up having peppered several other escaping 111's to no immediate effect. I had a look around to see how near land I was and thought ' Let's do it". So I cruised in and sawed off the port wing. My engine was lost of course but otherwise I survived in great shape and managed to ditch about 100 meters offshore, right near two ships from the convoy I had just helped defend.

By the way B50, I posted some pictures and a link in the GD High rez screenshots thread. Hope you don't mind.

I downloaded this campain but not sure where to put the various folders in the game. I guess the skins folder goes in my PaintSchemes\Skins, and the Missions goes in my Missions\Campain\RU?Not sure where to put the Background and MunueAnthem stuff should go. Could any one help me on this?

Hey Sun_Ra - you're going to enjoy this. TBH, I'm not sure about the background and sound files. i didn't use the sounds as I have music turned off -(it has always irritated the cr@p out of me in this game). The background one 'm also unsure about. it didn't work for me when I dropped it in RU folder.
So far I've been promoted to Lieutenant, got the order of the red banner or the star of - which ever is higher -plus bagged around 12 huns plus several probables.
In my last mission I just discovered, much to my chagrin, how fast the Mig3 can build up speed in a dive. Interestingly, it also loses a lot of responsiveness, especially at 690kmh and 200 metres above the ground.

Here's one for the inner-geek in us.

Has this castle/mansion texture always been there? That's a cool mod if it's not original.

I don't yet have a professional software installer, so don't just put the whole skins folder in PaintSchemes\skins.

1. (sorry) Open each different aircraft's folder in the download, and copy the .bmp files in that folder to it's corresponding folder in: PaintSchemes\Skins\[aircraft type]

2. Click on the missions folder in the download until you get to the "The_Siege" folder. Put "The_Siege" in: IL2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Campaign\RU

3. For the background, create a folder in: IL2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Campaign\RU called "hide". Put the "background.tga" in the "hide" folder for safe keeping.

Then, rename the "3rdGuards.tga" to "background.tga" and place in: IL2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Campaign\RU

4. Kind of the same thing for the menu music. Make a "hide" folder in: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\samples\Music\Menu , and put the original "ru" in the "hide" folder.

Then, put the "ru" wav file from the download in: IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\samples\Music\Menu

5. At this time you will be ready to become a Baltic Fleet Sailor.

B50

Edit: I found out what's wrong with the TGA for the background. It must be 512x512 pixels for the game to recognize it. I fixed the file, and will include it in the v1.1 update if there are any more significant boofs in the next few days.

If you can resize it to 512x512 in Irfanfiew, it will work fine.

Good Morning Flat Spin,

(Maybe night for you) Yes, the estate at Peterhoff was there during the war, and is there in the game ever since the map originally came out. From what I understand, it was restored after the war, as the fighting in the area from 41 to 43 damaged it pretty badly. It is a tourist attraction now.

Thanks for the help guys on install. I went ahead and just dumped the skins from the campain into the skins folder in game and hit yes to all in the pop up box. Seemed to work. So far so good, just need to get through the second mission with out getting shot down.

No problem Sun_Ra Thumbs Up

Thanks Flat Spin, for the screenies. I wouldn't be able to do that at all with my current setup, and there's no better advertisement than someone playing through the campaign.

I'm still playing through LW pilot Afrika. I had my personal best mission just today. 4 tomahawks destroyed during a Stuka escort sortie in which 5 of 6 returned. Metal

After that, I installed AAA's UI, and took it for a spin again. Aside from the compass being defective (almost realistic in a way), the new pits are top notch.

Anyhow, thanks again for the pics.

My pleasure, really. It's fun not knowing where things are coming from. I am also really enjoying the appearance of the thing - light settings, weather plus the very nicely done map -even though just glancing at any town will just about lock-up my PC. I guess this as the map they tried to go full real with. The layout of the buildings looks far more realistic than the generic sparse, irregularly placed buildings look that most cities have in the game.

I'm waiting till I forget what happens in my campaigns before I play them again. Kind of impossible though -once I start up I soon remember what's coming.

Sun_Ra -yeah, I did the same with the skin files as B50 had the correct file structure, allowing everything to slotin perfectly.

B-50 - have a look at the installation method for Afrika.I dont have any fancy software, just a demo version ofwin.rar. All you have to do is replicate the file structure of the campaign, paintschemes etc and then the player can just unzip it into IL2 1946 and they're set. Takes a few tries to get right but then it's a doddle. Let me know if you want a hand.

Thanks Uther. Wink I had fun making it, and I believe it captures the true spirit of FB.

I had 0 experience with any of these Soviet aircraft that are featured in the campaign before I began construction. I have actually dicovered that the LaGG-3 is a good performer at altitude (4000m), and I would rather take on a 109 above 2000m than on the deck. I also figured out a couple of tricks to offset the 109's HUGE energy advantage. I'm a hardened sailor and unafraid.

Man this is very well done. I've flown two combat misns and it reminds me a bit of my "VVS Fighters Pt1" cmpn of a couple of yrs ago. I had alot of experience flying the I-16 in that one, and have had some good luck so far.....mainly because I avoid the 109s, for the most part. This is NOT easy, but I did pretty good scoring two kills on my first misn against the Stukas and 4 on the 2cd against the raiding Ju-88s, but I had to earn 'em.

The fact that I managed to score two Stukas on that first raid was despite our constantly being jumped by the 109Fs, which were very aggressive.

My flight leader was killed by the 109s, but I followed our CO's orders and avoided the escorts, going after the bombers and dodging into clouds when fighters approached.

In the second raid on our shipping, I had learned how to use the rockets in my old cmpn.....get close and fire 'em all. JU-88s don't last long against them.

After I closed and gunned a 2cd JU-88, I saw more of them going in low, as well as enemy fighters chasing our communist comrades around.

I kept making runs on 88s, but these blasted 110s kept blazing away at me, skewing my runs.

I found myself mixing it up with a swarm of these twin engine fighters, which should never be underestimated. I damaged one and he was trying to get away between our ships.

He finally went in, but I nearly pooped my collective made undies when I saw what was coming down on me.

Every 110 in the Luftwaffe was on me, and 20mm buzzed about my head. I dunno how they missed...maybe my frantic turning.

As if that wasn't enough, I was nearly clobbered by this guy falling outta the sky and missing me by a few meters. Turns out it was my second kill finally diving into the water after the crew bailed.

I found myself shooting these guys off the tails of my comrades between dodging bursts of cannon fire from them.

Every time I turned around I was bounced by these things.....

After I gunned a 109 off a comrades tail, I wanted to get back home to keep my tally intact, but they wouldn't hear of it and kept blocking my escape. I would be on one's tail, and another would sneak up on me.

I found myself hanging out near a DD that was putting up a load of AA fire.

Man this is starting to get old!

I kept heading for the DDs in the harbor when a swarm would get me cornered, which helped at times, but none of them were hit badly enough to stop hassling me. I was getting desperate.

While tangling with three 110s and a persistant 109 with a single 30 cal, I ran outta gas, so I bailed to keep them from gunning me when I bellied in.

Amazingly, I had dropped my flaps when I ejected, and the machine just circled lazily as I floated to earth, finally ignored by the guys trying to kill me for the past 45 min. It bellied in and was salvaged. I was expecting it to be lost, but I will fly it again.

Ok, I got carried away, but this was one of the best misns I'd flown in a while. I love a cmpn where there is this attention to detail and research. A really impressive work so far. I will fly some more tomorrow come hades or high water.
