Hello guys,
can anyone help me with the V1. I tried to catch up with it with planes like spitfire, mustang or the thunderbolt. I simply couldn't catch up. I only had succes with the me 163. But then i was way to fast. Which plane is the best to use? I've seen video's from some people who tried to tip over a V1. It ended up with an explosion or a tumbling plane with 1 and a half wing. What is the best way to catch up with a V1 and to tip it over?
Thanks for your help.

Howdy DutchErik,
I think I know what's been plaguing you! I tried the same and failed several times. I've just included one in my latest campaign, but I have the pilots fly and try to knock out the launcher on the ground, before or during firing. Any that get fired off, can be air-intercepted, but read on...

The V1 cruises at an altitude of at least 2600M, and speed of about 560KPH. In a straight line race, you're correct, it can outpace just about every figther in this game, and you WILL NOT catch up to it. I tried the same and setup a mission, where I air-spawned right behind one, and tried to keep up with it to try to shoot it down, in a Spit 5 lb. No go! I could also never never catch it.

Only two ways' I've found to do this, and then it works quite nicely, but you only have a small window of opportunity:

1.) For an air-spawned one - dive on it from above. If you can dive on it from at least 1500M above, you can perhaps martial up the needed speed to catch and stay with one which has reached cruise alt and speed for a short while. This gives you a small window to knock one down. If you miss, have to circle, or shave speed, however, it will quickly burn away from you.

2.) Ground launch one. It takes the ground launched V1's some time to reach cruise alt and speed and you can very easily catch up to it with normal means, BEFORE, it reaches cruise altitude and speed. This works really cool!

If you can spot a ground launched one, you even turn, climb and can catch up to it with a conventional prop craft (Spit mkV) if you get it before it reaches cruising altitude.

Couple of other tips - the V1's don't propagate Icons (ie, the little text tags) which help you spot other aircraft in flight, so they are HARD BUGGERS TO SEE. They do, however, leave an exhaust trail which can be very helpful in spotting them. They are very hard to spot from a long way off.

Good luck,
cheers,
Dadio.

PS - I haven't tried to wing tip one yet, but I have had luck shooting them down by damaging their wings or engines! I'm told by others to watch doing this though, and if you trigger their warhead, they might take you with them! But I've had good luck just shooting them down. Once their engine or wings take a hit, they usually nose in!

This is true. However, be aware that the V-1 is a special object, not an 'aircraft'. You can actually padlock it, but as a ground object. Use the 'Padlock Enemy Ground' command to help keep it in sight.

Erik, there's a whole host of aircraft that can keep up with the V-1 and shoot it down.
The P-51 for instance.
Try to make it easy to spot by making sure the V-1 is silhouetted against cloud and take 1000m extra altitude.
Now you have the position to spot it early AND the acceleration to not only keep up with but also overtake the V-1 Big Grin
Also very important, set the weapons convergence distance to 600m or so - then shoot the V-1 down from a distance.

Try my legend of Y-29, the third mission has this exact situation m8 Winky

thanks guys

sorry I replied a bit late but I had important things to do.

Thanks for all the info. Now I can make some "explosive" missions with those V1 missiles.

All,
Just adding to the thread with a new experience I had last night re: intercepting the v1. Well, if you read the thread above, I warned about possibly triggering the warhead if you shoot one down? ... well... been there, done that.

I reflew my mission again with the v1 last night, and got frustrated trying to wing-tip it, so I dropped back to about 400m behind and started raking it with MG fire. Blew some parts off it but it kept going. Got tired of that, and turned the hipano cannon on it and BA-BOOOOMMM>

After flying through a blinding flash, I was surprised to find I was still alive. Or was I? The kite stayed up, but I lost elevator response completely! A quick external view of the kite indicated the blast had completely blown off both elevators! And ripped a baby-sized hole in my cowling, as well as peppered the skin with holes. I had to actually bail from the plane, as it was in no condition to even attempt a landing.

So, now I know what that's like! ;-} .. it was interesting.

I can't even find the V1 launching base when I fly to it in the RAF, Mission (P-51D-5NTN1). I
played the (P-51vsV-1.NTRK)Track and the Prim
Target (Base) is there. Can you tell me why the
Play Track graphics are different the the mission. I uninstalled and reinstelled the Game
(V4.07M) and tried it, but it's still the same.
DO you think upgrading to V4.08m WOULD FIX MY PROBLEM ?

Thanks
Chuck
