There were some doubts if a Hurricane would be able to take off from a carrier, but all the pilots took off thanks to the carrier crew that managed to increase its speed a few knots over its designed maximun speed

The planes landed at Bardufoss, where they shared the base with Gladiators from RAF 263 Sqn

Within a few days on Norway, and after a couple of patrols, the Luftwaffe decided to pay a visit to the expeditionary RAF base

Despite the Hurricanes interception, Bardufoss was heavily bombed...

However, this didn't prevented the Hurricanes and Gladiators to keep providing cover...

...for the different landings along the Norwegian coast...

... which was in need, given the large number of raids on the expedionary fleet...

The attacks were heavy and the toll in ships, material, men and planes was too high. Despite the succesfull landings in Narvik, the order was given to retreat. The ships become even more important, as they were the only way out of Norway.
The first steep was to move the ships deep inside the fjords, were torpedo-laden He-111 would not be able to hit them.
However, a new menace was added to the British Expedionary Force:

The Stukas were easy prey for the Hurricanes, even more because the Bf-109 fighter were deployed too far south, beyond their range to reach the Theater of Operations. However, by the overwhelming difference on the numbers, the Stukas were able to hit several ships and force large groups of troops to move by land to where the ships were re-deployed, beyond the stukas range...

But they were still within range of Bf-110, based in Herdla airbase

which created havoc among the retreting troops

... until the RAF 46 Hurricanes showed up over the fjord

Dogfights erupted over the troop columns...

The leader is under attack!!!

Its dependable wingman is fast to intercept...

...and scores some hit to force the Bf-110 to break.

Despite the efforts of the troops, the fleet and the expeditionary RAF detachment, the evacuation order was given. The order was to burn the planes and evacuate the personal by boat. But the pilots, knowing that Norway was lost, that France would be lost soon, knew that every single plane would be needed to defend the next target: The United Kingdom.

Without having an arrestor hook, without having carrier training, but having proved that they were capable to beat the most overwhelming odds, they flew their Hurricanes towards the carrier and attempted a landing.

Would YOU have what it takes to be a RAF 46 Sqn Pilot?
Would YOU be able to fly desperate missions under desperate circumstances?
Would YOU be able to evacuate your plane to the carrier, even without an arrestor hook?

You'll be able to find it out, by flying 'Hurricanes Over Norway'. An Historical Campaign by Mariskal

Coming Soon.

Hi Mariskal,
Sounds like a great campaign, looking forward to it. Just to let you know that Tchaika over at http://www.france-simulation.com/index.php?op=edito has done some Gloster gladiators of No.263 sqd as well as Norweigen Gladiators plus som Hawk 75 which were captured intact by the Germans. I was hoping he would do some Hurricane of No.46 sqd, he may still do in the future. I played withsome of his other Hurricane skins and did these for my home use.

Here are a couple of pic found on net of 46 sqd

Stuartoose, Thanks for the heads-up!

1Java_Serval has made a great skin pack for the Hurricanes that will be part of the release. I've been working myself on creating the ones for the RAF 263, but I just downloaded Tchaika pack for it and they are what I need.

I've been playing with the idea of expanding the campaign to include the first deployment of RAF 263 sqn to Lake Lesjakog and have the player to flight Gladiators from a frozen lake, then to be evacuated and return with RAF 46 (Hurricanes). It would add about 5/7 missions to the campaign, putting the grand total around 23 missions.

These campaign will cover the whole story of the RAF detachement to Norway in 1940.

What do you guys think? Should I do the whole thing?

Hi Mariskal

I would prefer it if you did 2 versions, 1 with the extra Gladiator missions and one without (you could put them in the same download). Or have the Glads as a bonus mini-campaign

The reasons are that I generally don't like it when you switch planes in the same campaign (unless they are substantially similar types of machine) - I think it weakens the identity of the campaign. When you think about it, most people like to refer to a campaign as "That great Spitfire campaign" or "that great Hellcat campaign" etc. As soon as someone has to explain a campaign as "that one where you start in the P-39 then go on to the P-47 then you go on to etc." it always sounds a bit convoluted and less appealing (personally speaking)

Also I hate flying Gladiators because of the restricted view, so it would certainly put me off.

Still, I certainly can't speak for everyone, so as ever, go with what you think is best.

Phil,
I'm sure you make a valid point from the perspective of the player. But remember, any pilot that survived long enough ended up in many cases with a different aircraft. Imagine the delight of a Razorback pilot being given a Mustang or the Hurricane pilot getting a Spit. I remember playing one of the original fighter campiagns in IL2 Sturmovik and gpoing from a Yak to a LaGG to a MiG to a late Yak. Each plane had different characteristics and gave me an new edge each time I changed. I personally enjoyed that.
I'm not disagreeing with you here, just saying that in real life many pilots would have changed models at some point of the war.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read it in English, thank a veteran.

I understand what you're saying beebop. And at the end of the day my opinion is no more valid than anybody else's.

I just think that those of us who've been playing for a while (which I guess is the overwhelming majority) know what planes we like, and which ones we don't like, and tend to choose which campaigns we download largely on that basis.

Also, I think that although the Glad and the Hurri are contemporaneous, they are very, very different machines. If I was a fan of the Glad I may not want to play a lot of Hurricane missions to reach my favourite ride.

Glad+Hurri combined campaigns actually seem quite numerous, oddly enough. The ones I have downloaded I have judiciously deleted the Gladiator missions after studying the .mis files, which I'm sure would upset the authors! Surprised

Glad to have been of help.

I must admit that I am split as well. I do quite like the idea of changing planes as in the glad you have to use different tactics avoid the fighter cover stick to the bombers, but once the Hurricane comes along you can start to go on the offensive and tackel the Germans head on. If I had my way I would start Skua II, then Sea Gladiator and then Hurricane but I think I leave those dreams to BoB.
I will fly whatever!

Just to let you know if you update your Football War campaign you can use my Honduras and FAS Corsairs at flying legends, they are mostly the work of RONNCO but he let my put them up.

Hi Guys,

Bad news: My laptop is failing and I need to send it back to the manufacturer to get fix. I have a full back up of my disk, so no stuff will be lost, but certainly this campaign will get -once again- delayed.

Update on where things are: I have created a few missions with the player flying Gladiators w/ RAF 263 in its first deployment at Lake Lesjakog. Still debating if to include them as part of the main campaign or not. I have also included Tchaika RAF 263 skins for its second deployment (when the Hurricanes were sent to Norway).

So, this campaign will not die easy, but it is taking waaaay too long to be finished Hammer

I like the idea of switching rides a bit in a campaign. I think it adds immersion, especially in the early war period. But, different strokes for different folks. Cool It really would be a simple matter to have a with and without release. Wink

Kuban_Zen,

My campaign release will include Hurricane skins from Serval (special skin pack he kindly made for this campaing) and Gladiator skins from Tchaika. I'll include pilot skins from Elephant as well.

A lot of Tchaika stuff is available at flying-legengs and france-simulation.

Hi, Kuban_zen,
Sorry to say that the Hurricane skin are some that I made by manipulating Tchaika other Hurricane skins and are therefore not for public use. I tried to promt him into action but I know he has so much on at the moment and that Hurricane skins are not high on the list however I live hope. I just wanted some skins to comliment his great Glad skins I'll try to ask him if its ok to send them to you for private use only but he is not as regular at simulation francais as he used to be.

Glad your back Mariskal looking forward to the campaign.

Dear Mariskal and Stuartoose, thank your for your answers. I downloaded "Hurricanes Over Norway" campaign (old version, as far as I see, based on "Net3Summer" map), and I like it very much. And I downloaded all Tchaika's skins from france-simulation.com, but I didn't find skins for Hurricanes except Belgian and Yugoslavian Hurricanes-I and some RAF skins for Hurricanes-IIc. I hope, sometime dear Tchaika will make more skins for Hurricanes of RAF for public use. Anyway, thank you very much. Give my regards to Tchaika.

It is not dead. Don't worry about it. The beta tester are trying to finish thing up to pass me the 'clean-up' version of the campaing by late this month. I should have then have some time in August to work on the corrections and hopefully (not guaranteed) release by late August. If not, then it might be mid-September as real life will get busy in early september.

Thanks for the interest and sorry for the lack of updates.

It's really amazing how complicated and time consuming this is. Ive been working on my east/west 1947 cmpn over japan for nearly 5 mos now, and am less than half finished. This despite spending alot of time at my "job" working on them on the computer that amuses me while I wait for people to buy used cars etc. Skinners, testers, research, all take a huge amount of time. I hope the next gen of FMB can be a little more automated somehow....like with my own robot to do stuff for me.
