I'm currently making a series of training missions where the player is flying P-51D's with the Wiscosin Air National Guard (WI-ANG). 1949. I have made 4 skins already for them, I added the simple text layers for Willyvics template.
Its based on the Balaton 1 map, Lake Balaton being Lake Winnebago. Its not the same obviously but it works ok. The main base is Oshkosh air base.
I took the map picture and edited the text crudely and renamed the towns as close as I could to accurate to real towns. It actually is kinda believable once you get into it, kinda like spit n' fire and hurricane season. (where i got the idea for editing the map) Ill post pics later on when I get the chance
I like the idea of a training campaign. What kind of missions do you have for it?
I did something like this for the Tempest a while back, with descriptions of recommended engine settings, air and ground attack practice, and the last mission was a full on combat mission where you had to attack some ground targets and possibly engage some enemy fighters. Maybe I should finish it one of these days.
So far its only flying formation with another P-51. I'm not sure of other missions that I could do for it that might at least be believable to what might have happened. Any other mission ideas?
Well, if you want a true training campaign, it might be a good idea to gather up as much engine management data and preferred methods to fly it. Include that stuff in the mission briefings and have the mission focus on that aspect. For instance, if you want to focus on how to use the K-14 gyrosight on the P-51D-20NA, explain how it works, when to use it, what needs to be adjusted and key assignments, and so forth. Then the mission could start against a rookie 109 with no ammo, giving you the opportunity to figure out how it works.
Start with the basics like good stick & rudder work in conjunction with trim, handling quirks, then engine management, formation flying, gunnery, ground attack, and then finally a mission or two where you put theory to practice.
