I just started some basic work on a battle of Briton Campaign. I've searched around but can't find anything that describes a standard Luftwaffe level bomber (Heinkel/Junkers/Dorner) bomber formation. From the few pics i've seen, it looks like they based their formation on a three ship VIC and stacked to the rear at the same altitude. Anyone know a good source for this? How many bombers were usually in a group?

Try this link. It's all German, but you should be able to find what you are after.
http://www.luftarchiv.de/index.htm?/luftwaffe/jagd.htm Kampfgeschwader is about half way down on that page. |

Thanks. just what I was looking for. What was more common for medium bombers? Der Gruppenkolonne aus Staffelwinkeln oder Staffelkeilen

Just a hint: don't look at what was common, look at what you can use.
The gruppenkolonne aus staffelkeilen can be reproduced in IL2 by using 4 ship flights and numbering them so that they keep this formation. (why not 3 ship vics? because the game omits the left one, not the rear one if you go from 4 to 3 a/c per flight if I remember correctly) You can take care of this in the properties tab of the flights involved and making sure they are numbered correctly. The lead a/c should be squadron 1 flight 1, the others should be flights 2 and 4. Repat this for squad 2 flights 1 and 4 and same for the third group and you have your formation. Then comes the difficult bit: how to make the three groups of aircraft fly behind each other. Then, the most important thing is that you must NOT let the no. 1 flights escort another group as this will ruin the formation; if you plan those separately and give them a 50m variation in altitude and/ or position to the left or right the formation will look quite "natural". Good luck m8 This message has been edited. Last edited by: Bogustogus, |
