I'm trying to simulate the dubious high level bombing attack the Americans made on the Japanese carrier fleet at Midway, but I'm having two issues:
1. the B-17s begin a dive to begin their bombing attack which was contrary to level bombing practices of the time.
2. even after giving them rookie settings, they unerringly manage to sink one of the carriers with each mission. I don't mind them getting lucky from time to time with a hit here or there, but this is like they've got lasar guided JDAMs.
Easy solution Put Very small ship's right next to the carrier were it's almost invisible unless your there and set them to do that. And for that dive from the way point that's G Attack set it further away from the actual target. I think that fixes the problem
With level bombers, like B-17, the general rule is to set GAttack on the target waypoint, and place the waypoint exactly where you want the bombs to hit, however, DO NOT use the "Set Target" button with the green target thingy. It usually helps also to have another waypoint before and after the GAttack one, all in a line and at same altitude, etc.
So, not using "Set Target..." means you have to experiment to a certain degree with timing so that ships are reasonably near to the drop point so that splashes aren't comically far off the mark?

True of non-bomber aircraft. Level bombers like a B-17 behave differently. They will release so that they drop the very last bomb precisely at the GATTACK waypoint.
If the target is moving then some element of timing will need to be tested.
