The "Blue- nosed bastards from Bodney" in the battle of the Bulge

December 1944: a fighter pilot is transferred from his training unit in England to his operational squadron in the Ardennes. Into action at last!
After a long cold flight in an army C-47 he arrives at Asch, also known as forward base Y-29, a battle- scarred former Luftwaffe base in Belgium.
After touching down, his flight leader awaits him in the 352 FG ops room.
There, while being briefed for his first mission, he gets his first glance of the map of the Ardennes, the densely forested and hilly terrain that could either make him an ace or see him leave in a coffin real soon.

Unknown to the newcomer, a bloody battle is about to begin.
Under cover of the night and the bad weather, the Germans have assembled 3 panzer armies nearby; they are ready to attack!
The Luftwaffe has saved just enough fuel to have a small reserve, and they will use it to cover and support the last German offensive of the war, the battle of the Bulge.
They will give it all they've got and they are far from beaten...

So, the replacement for the previous rookie has arrived. In the next couple of weeks, he will see things that will be talked about for the next 60 years: he will fight the feared long- nosed Focke's, chase V-1's, intercept the new jet aircraft, attack V-2 sites, do escort jobs, chase enemy staff cars, run the gauntlet of light AAA over snowbound airfields, patrol the towns and battlefields of the Ardennes. Even his own AAA will claim victims among US pilots!

The battle of the Bulge will earn his squadron the only distinguished unit citation in Western Europe, when they scramble during operation "Bodenplatte" on new year's day, 1945 to create the awesome story that will always be remembered as

The legend of Y-29

Will you survive your first 5 missions? Will you become an ace? It's up to you to answer these questions...

Indeed, it ís as good as Murmansk to Marocco... it's better!

Diversity, lots of it...

Surprises...

Suspense...

Challenging...

Great briefs....

More immersive than M2M, as all missions are located in the same area, and in a limited time period.

Apart from learning how to jock that Pony, this campaign taught me some more historical facts on the Bulge too! (Meaning to say, Bogustogus has done a lot of work in making this campaign as accurate as it could be!)

Bogustogus a.k.a. 1.JaVA_Sjonnie has done a great job once again. bow

Hi Bogustogus,
I have downloaded the campaign from M4T and flown the first mission. I had great fun against the oppostion in the first mission but in fortunately they collided with me and that was game over. Anyway, just wondering about plane selection. In the first two missions I have been put in a P-51D and a P-47 when the briefing says I should be in a P-51C and a P-51D respectively. No biggie for me as I can tick the correct box in the FMB but just letting you know.
Cheers,
FSM

EDIT: Restarted the campaign with the LOWEST rank and the first mission puts me in the correct plane.

Flatspinman, that would have been my suggestion. Thumbs Up

It can't be helped, the campaign should be started with the lowest rank available. That's why I would suggest to anyone downloading: check out the comments in the read-me file, as it tells you more about this rank thing and some other stuff too.

I'm afraid that the only campaign in which this bug wouldn't occur would have to be a campaign with P51's only- and the theme rules that out as an option, because 352 FG was on loan to 2nd TAF and thus almost every day they were escorting P47's or other aircraft.

I hope we will get a FMB/ campaign generator in BoB that DOES handle it the way we need: with the player in a pre- assigned flight and nowhere else.

Anyway, have fun !! Wink

Should anyone be wondering; yes, the campaign can be played in 4.07m, and as far as I know that does not change the "rank" issue...

One possible solution to the rank problem is to set up the friendly aircraft so that the player's flight is the only one in its squadron. There are 4 squadrons with 4 flights in each, so it should be possible to set up missions that conform to this requirement.

Zeus-cat

My Campaigns:
Straight Shot (9 missions in the Japanese Seaplane - A6M2-N "Rufe")
Straight Into an Icy Hell (14 missions for the Rufe in the Aleutians)
Straight Down (26 dive-bombing missions in a carrier-based SBD-3)
Straight Down Some More (19 more missions in a carrier-based SBD-3)
Straight and True (30 torpedo bomber missions in an IL-2T)

If everything went right, the package over at www.1java.org was updated. I reviewed some of the missions and I think the rank issue will be a thing of the past now. Thanks Zeus Thumbs Up

Thanks guys!! Just what I needed to get inspiration for another campaign.

Any favourite subjects for an offline campaign? Winky
I wonder whether I should make a war- spanning campaign for the Hurricane... it was in action everywhere (or just about) from the beginning to the end of the war, it was flown in combat by the RAF, the VVS, the Yugoslav AF, the RAAF, the Belgian AF, the Indian AF, the RNZAF...

It could cover a dozen maps and 6 years of war. Should I build that? If not, what is it to be? Blink

G'day Bogustogus campaign builder extraordinary, long time no converse.

My suggestion would be a Mediterranean campaign utilising the new Desert and Italian maps. Start off with just a couple Battle of Britain missions prior to being posted to Africa, thence Italy. Instead of concentrating on one a/c you could use a variety, e.g. Hurri or Spit in the UK, Hurri, Spit and/or a variety of the Hawk family in Africa and Italy. Maybe even the Martlet in Africa.
Or, a RN pilot flying (shore based) Martlets in Africa then carrier based Seafires in Italy or seconded to the RAF to fly whatever takes your fancy in land based in Italy.

Regards

Pierre

Hello Bogus,

I think the problem with long campaigns is that they take so long to play that they don't get finished. I haven't downloaded "Murmansk to Morocco" for that reason - I would never finish it.

I think Y-29 was the perfect concept (1 plane type, 1 map) with the perfect number of missions. It's the ideal format. As for your next campaign, I would advise using one of the new maps (as it will be fresh for everyone) and a plane that has a reasonably high level of popularity (so plenty of people will be motivated to play it).

So for example (hint) if you did a Hurricane campaign using the new desert map, I would be the first to download it.

But that's just my opinion, so disregard it if you want to do something else......!

I'm 4 missions in and loving it!

I do however, have a quick question; though missions are in the December time frame, they have thus far utilized only the Ardennes summer map...is this correct? Will it change later on?

Thanks and looking forward to completing this one! Thumbs Up

Hedge, yes it will change. With snow from the 17th of December. Depending on which part of the Ardennes you were in there was hardly any snow in some places until late afternoon. Thumbs Up

Thanks Breeze147! Did u know there's a video about Preddy getting shot by friendly AAA in the legend of y-29 campaign? Big Grin

Preddy was a blue- noser, too. Its his squadron that the campaign is about. whisper and because Preddy died on christmas day 1944 he wasn't there when the legend of Asch happened on new year's day.

They say Preddy would have gone beyond 30 kills and become the highest scoring US ace of the war easily had the AAA gunner not fired those 60 fatal rounds. If my information is right Preddy was ahead of Richard Bong when he died...

How about:

From Sollum to Sicily, 25 missions in 25 ,onths in sand and sun. One campaign is for an allied fighter pilot, the other for an axis fighter pilot. It starts out on the new desert online map and it ends on the new Italy map. There is quite a variety of aircraft in the period on each side, we're talking about starting with operation Battleaxe in january of 1942, featuring the capture of Tobruk by an Italian/ German offensive and after that the drive to Tunisia and finally the invasion of Sicily which was in 1943.
Lets say allied pilots progress from Hurricane and P40 to Spitfire Vc and then on to Spit Mk. Vb.

For axis pilots the MC200, MC202, Bf109F4, 109G2 and 109G6.

I'm not sure whether I should make it a coop or single player?
