I have been asking all the people I play with on multiplayer how to open the console, the only problem is when I press the (~) button nothing happens, I have seen other posts similiar to mine that suggest looking for a 'regit' file which doesn't exist, I use vista by the way. Any suggestions I'm desperate to change my user.

It looks like you have already read my previous post, but I'm asking this again.

Do you have any kind of infrared controller/receiver plugged in (For the Media centre) ? Try removing the device. You can also do this via the Device Manager. These remote devices sometimes conflict with few of the Keyboard keys.

Also try this method which I'm giving. It should work on VISTA. What do you mean the file doesn't exist ? Do as I say.

Open the Registry Editor (Go to Start and Type "regedit" in the search box.)

Navigate to the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters.

Find an entry named 'OverrideKeyboardSubtype' with REG_DWORD as the type. The value should be 2, change it to 0. Now try to open the console. You can also reboot your system.

Hopefully this should solve the problem.

I search my computer for regedit and got no results, the only devices I have are my mouse, the power charger (laptop) and a router which gives me net.

The router is a tp-link wireless adapter.

OK,

What do you mean by 'got no results' ? Did you type 'regedit' in the search box as I told. You need to click on the Start Orb Button, and then click in the Start Search Dialog Box, and then type regedit and press the Enter key. This should open the Vista registry editor, unless it has been disabled. In that case there are other methods to Enable it back. The Registry Editor EXE file is located at: C:\Windows\regedit.exe.

Or do you mean to say that the Path ''HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters'', doesn't exist ?? Please clarify a bit more. I don't think your router can create any conflict as such.

I found these,

Default REG_SZ (value not set)
------------------------------------------------
DisplayName REG_SZ i8042 Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse port Driver
------------------------------------------------
Error Control REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
------------------------------------------------
Group REG_SZ Keyboard Port
------------------------------------------------
Imagepath RED_EXPAND_SZ system32\DRIVERS\i8042prt.sys
------------------------------------------------
Start REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
------------------------------------------------
Tag REG_DWORD 0x00000005 (5)
------------------------------------------------
Type REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

They are all the things I found after going where you wanted me to, what do I do now?

Good ! Now EXPAND the Node i8042prt by pressing the + button. After that you must be able to see few more options, so click on Parameters. After that look for an entry named 'OverrideKeyboardSubtype' on the right side of the editor, and change it's value to 0.

Hope you can do it ?

Edit: Oops! We both posted at the same time. I didn't see the above post of yours. Anyways, first try the given method.

Hmmm.....

It should work as per my knowledge. Did you reboot your PC after making the changes ? Must reboot first.

And I hope you properly changed the Value of 'OverrideKeyboardSubtype' to 0 ? I have tested this method many times on several PCs, and it worked fine.

Hi King......I am running Vista 64 bit and after seeing this post I thought I found the answer to my inoperative console as well. There seems to be something strange going on. I have followed your instructions regarding the registry to the tee and understand perfectly what you are doing. I got down to the last folder and see everything you described except there is no "Override Keyboard Subtype" line. I do however have an entry for "KeyboardFailedReset" which I find odd. Any knowledge on this would be appreciated.

I have the same issue with V64, but no version of 32 bit Vista Im using now. I have a guy in my clan (UNS) who has fixed the problem, and he said it was associated with 'ehome'

I know i have this on my laptop (V64 bit) but I have not messed with it as I rarely play on the laptop anyway. I *hear* that disabling the ehome settings or ehome itself will solve it.

Our clan is aloose one; more of a community but I will ask the very next time I see him on.

In the meantime, look up ehome and try to disable it. Im no whiz but I run 3 servers and thats no small feat with FC2 Wink2

Agent - Thank you very much. You sent me on a google search for "ehome" and I finally got it. HERE IS THE ANSWER FOR VISTA 64 BIT WITH MEDIA CENTER: Disable the microsoft ehome transmitter under the device manager. I still have to figure out how to keep it unistalled as it wants to reinstall during reboot, but I am so happy that I can finally use my console.

All you guys are great. I appreciate all your efforts to keep this game alive.

YES, That's correct. Disable ANY kind of IR transmitter/receiver, be it on a 32 bit or 64 bit OS. That doesn't matter.

I wonder what's up with dbward ? He should first reboot his pc and try.

Enjoy the game.

Oh, If you don't want certain programs or applications (ehome) to run automatically on startup, there's an easy way to disable them.

*Click on Start. Type 'msconfig' in the search box. Click 'Continue' in the User Account Control to continue.
*Click on the Startup Tab. Uncheck the boxes in the "Startup Items", that you wish to disable. And then Click on OK and reboot. Another method is via the Control Panel.
