Would only require a complete rework for all cockpits from scratch. So I have my doubts...

though i realise the work involved...
and in the theoretical plane... it would be something... |

quote: Well, this is wishlist thread - so I presume wanting something that requires some extra work is allowed here Anyway, I don't think it requires rework of all cockpits from scratch. Last time I played LOMAC in stereo 3D I was very impressed how the cockpit was modeled - it is not only flat surface with shadows painted on it - it has true 3D shape - you can even see the gauges standing out of panel. But even if the cockpit was just fake 3D sphere with texture on it (which it isn't) I would still want to have 6DOF - even if it would look bit funny when moving your head inside that sphere. I think the cockpit models as they are now would be good starting point - specular reflections would probably look a bit off, maybe some missing polygons on instruments sides would be needed to add (I wouldn't mind if texturing on them wasn't perfect) but that should be about it. Biggest problem I see is how the aiming sight would work - not sure how this works on real aircraft (?). I am quite surprised that community is not demanding this feature more - it probably wouldn't be that big step as from not having TrackIR to having TrackIR - but still IMO it would be huge step in 3D immersion. It is probably too late to put it into Flaming Cliffs, but I think it should be doable without that much effort for planned Hokum addon. The HUD image is a projection that produces a virtual image normally floating at quite a distance (or infinity). This means that head movements do not affect the accuracy - target markers on the HUD are always correct relative to the outside world. The only sim I know that recreates this behaviour is Il2/FB with its reflector sights. Likewise Lock On would need different rendering of the HUD image.
The cockpit models are indeed three-dimensional, but they do use a lot of flat textures at many areas. How well the current models would work with a free head position is anyone's guess; sure many people wouldn't mind distorted perspectives, others would. Gaps would be the bigger issue, and I'm sure there are gaps. For sure this is no option for 1.1 as the 6DOF feature was only revealed by TrackIR relatively recently, when 1.1 was already in beta. Can't say what plans ED has for 1.2 in this regard. Guess we'll have to wait and see Caretaker ----------------------- Eagle Dynamics Beta Team |

Bump for support! This simulation would be completly mind-blowing if we had 6DOF support.
Yes, I know that a lot would be involved with the implementation of this...but as Roman said it IS a wishlist forum. -Chris Alienware P4 3.0 GHz 800 MHz FSB | 2 GB PC 3200 | Radeon 9800 Pro 256 MB w/Omega's | Saitek X52 | TrackIR 3 Pro (w/Vector) |
