there were studies done on the Av-8B operations during the gulf war. They're were more susceptible to IR guided weapns from their hot hengine/nozzle heat signatures. Theyre complex propulsion systems make them more vulnerable to AA SAM hits downing the aircraft.

------------------------------

Alienware Aurora Extreme
AMD64FX-51, 1 Gig RAM
BFG nVIDIA 5950 256mb (56.72)
2x36Gig Raptors (RAID 0)
Audilogy 2 7.1
XP Pro
P8000/ TrackIR2
ditched my Satiek X45
4 CH Pro HOTAS and Pedals...

As they would be, considering what they're capable of.

Referring back to a a recent post speaking of "hovering around the battlefield" ... If any version of the harrier were to do this they would run out of fuel very shortly.

The Harrier is a good jet but is lacking in a few areas. First and foremost is RANGE. Even with both wingtanks the harrier has short legs compared to other conventional fighters. In the gulf war many a harrier were diverted because of lack of fuel and therefore lack of time on station. This is a kick in the gut when you're main reason to exist is Close Air Support.

Second, is AVIONICS... the harrier still carries the APG-65... an effective however out-dated multi-mode pulse doppler. This is why the USMC has outfitted all of their hornets with the APG-73 series.

Third, as mentioned before, the centrally-positioned engine is vulernable to attack by IR weapons.

I would like to see the hornet as an addition because it would add in U.S. carrier operations as well as a truly efficient multi-role fighter. If people want to say that they don't have access to the information to model the F/A-18 I'm sure they could get it if they wanted too... if developers can make a sim like Falcon 4.0 they can darn well model a hornet.

My 2C.

regarding the harrier, we can always fly that in this next game. http://www.thunder-works.com/news.htm
I dunno how realistic this sim would be, so far i am not that impressed (no offense, just my opinion.) From the videos and such, I don’t think the cockpit is clickable (which I can live with since I put up with that with lomac) but the FM seems a bit weird – maybe its because its still in developing stage. Regardless I’ll still buy it.

The hornet would be hard to add in due to the classified information like you mentioned- especially for ED the Russian company. Falcon 4.0 was able to make it realistic because most information about that plane is made public whereas the F-18 is not. Same goes with the F-15, but Lock On still modeled it and hence some parts like unrealistic.

Any speculation as to the Mirage 2000, rafale, eurofighter type aircraft? Maybe a little close to home.. I know this game has a much bigger market in Europe.

Those rather new aircraft, i suspect some info are still classified, won't be in a fully simulated game for a while. Maybe 20-30 years? lol We don't even have all the info for the F-14 tomcat and its going out of service!

what about the Mirage 2000? They already have a good non-flyable model...not to mention its just a kick-ass manueverable fighter... shouldn't be as hard to get that modeling inf.

I dunno if any informatio on the Mirage 2000 is still classified but it is actually very hard to add a new plane into the game. For example, when Flaming Cliffs came out with the Su-25T, it took them 6 months just to model one aircraft.

Well there's always Super-VGA Harrier if you're looking for a seemingly accurate harrier sim. Engines are far too powerful, however. But it does have leg up on the dynamic campaign; you control an assault force that has to take an island. Of course, you can let the computer handle that work while you just fly the harriers. Made 10+ years ago but it's still okay I guess. Need DOSBox to play it.

Hmmm...sounds like something you could download at underdogs.com maybe. They have all kinds of full versions of classic games and sims over there.
